Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to a Detroit Free Press article of March 14, 1872, "The advent of the railroad has completely changed the course of life of the inhabitants of this village, which is the first of importance going west from Detroit." The two railroads that came to Plymouth in the early 1870s changed the course of history for the once-sleepy town. Within 20 years, the railroads would be used to transport repeat orders for the booming air rifle industry to all corners of the United States. The rail lines made industry possible for a small burg outside of the metropolitan area of Detroit. Because of the distance to other cities, passenger transportation was always an important mission of railroads. These needs were met between 1899 and 1928 by the Detroit, Plymouth & Northville Railroad (Interurban). Later, enhanced passenger service ran on the Chesapeake & Ohio (C&O) line between Detroit and Grand Rapids, stopping in Plymouth (1946-1971).

Book Wheels of Her Own

Download or read book Wheels of Her Own written by Carla R. Lesh and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-03-25 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women used automobiles as soon as they had access to them. Black, Indigenous, and White American women utilized the automobile to improve their quality of life and achieve greater freedom. These women shared unique concerns and common aims as they negotiated their way through a time when advocacy for social change was undergoing a resurgence. The years that brought the automobile to the United States, 1893-1929, also brought increased legal and social restrictions based on racism and gender stereotypes. For women the automobile was a useful tool as they worked to improve their quality of life. The automobile provided a means for Black, Indigenous, and White women to pull away from limitations and work toward greater freedom. Exploring these key issues and more, this book is a history and social exploration of women and the automobile during the early automotive era.

Book excerpt: Have you ever wondered about those recreational vehicles going down the highway? Would you ever want to live in one? Why would anyone ever want to live that way? This book answers the many questions that Barbara receives whenever someone finds out that she is traveling alone in an RV and is almost 70 years old. It covers how Barbara began, what she considered when buying an RV, the difference in the aspects of her life style and some of her experiences. She spends about three months in a location (usually a national site) working in exchange for her campsite. If you have ever considered living in an RV then this book will answer many questions. If you have no intention of ever living this way, maybe you will enjoy hearing why Barbara feels that it is a wonderful way to live, although maybe not your choice of a life style. After her divorce in the early 1980s, Barbara began extensive foreign and domestic travel. She has been to six continents and many, many countries. She has hiked and bicycled abroad as well as taken bus trips, riverboats trips and cruises. When Barbara was 65 years old she sold her house and almost all her belongings and began to live in a recreational vehicle. She was born in 1942 and feels that her early adult life was greatly affected by the norms of the 1950s. She was married at age eighteen and years later began college. Barbara has three children: David, born in 1965; Pamela, born in 1969; and Kimberly, born in 1970. After her children were in school she began her career in education. Barbara taught all grades (except kindergarten) in an elementary school, then all grades in a middle school, then worked as a middle school counselor, then finished her career as a high school counselor. Her marriage ended in 1984 and since then she has traveled extensively and lived in many states. Barbara believes that she is continuing to evolve into someone who accepts challenges.

Book Jacksonville on Wheels A Car Culture Retrospective

Download or read book Jacksonville on Wheels A Car Culture Retrospective written by Dorothy K. Fletcher and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacksonville has long been a mecca for car enthusiasts and collectors, due in part to the city's unique automotive history. Bystanders gazed in wonder as John Einig drove Florida's very first steam-powered horseless carriage through the streets in 1889. Fred Gilbert opened the first automobile dealership in 1903, just before the city's first automobile parade, and people were soon clamoring to buy cars of their own. Claude Nolan, whose local dealership has been in business for well over a century, gained fame for racing his Cadillac against an airplane at the Jacksonville Fairgrounds. NASCAR held races at the Jacksonville Speedway in the '50s and '60s. Author Dorothy K. Fletcher explores the rich history and memories of car culture in the River City.
