Download or read book Staging Tradition written by Michael Ann Williams and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2024-02-12 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on extensive archival research and oral history, Staging Tradition traces the parallel careers of the creators of the Renfro Valley Barn Dance and the National Folk Festival. Through their devotion to the staging of traditional culture, including folk, country, and bluegrass music, John Lair (1894-1985) and Sarah Gertrude Knott (1895-1984) became two of the mid-twentieth century's most notable producers. Lair and Knott's discovery of new developments in theater and entertainment during the 1920s led the pair to careers that kept each of them center stage. Inspired by programs such as WLS's Barn Dance and the success of early folk events, Lair promoted Kentucky musicians. Knott staged her own radically inclusive festival, which included Native and African American traditions and continues today as the National Folk Festival. Michael Ann Williams shows how Lair and Knott fed the public's fascination with the "art of the common man" and were in turn buffeted by cultural forces that developed around and beyond them.

Book Strategic Event Planning for the Florida Music Festival FMF USA

Download or read book Strategic Event Planning for the Florida Music Festival FMF USA written by Leigh Andrzejewski and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the aid of the guided analysis of the Florida Music Festival (FMF), this case study outlines the use of the strategic event planning process with a view to establish events as a tourist attraction within a destination. The paper explains the importance of the tourism industry for Orlando, USA and sets out ways in which events can capture this market by means of carefully crafted strategies in order to generate event tourism. The Florida Music Festival has been in existence for 15 years, but it has not grown beyond a residentially attended event. This is a problem that appears to stem from (1) this event's inability to increase the return on investment for stakeholders, (2) an inadequate understanding of the current visitor profile, and (3) the inability of the event to grow the attendance reach beyond that of local residents.

Book Sacred Steel

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert Stone
  • Publisher : University of Illinois Press
  • Release : 2010-10-01
  • ISBN : 0252090306
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Sacred Steel written by Robert Stone and published by University of Illinois Press. This book was released on 2010-10-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book, Robert L. Stone follows the sound of steel guitar into the music-driven Pentecostal worship of two related churches: the House of God and the Church of the Living God. A rare outsider who has gained the trust of members and musicians inside the church, Stone uses nearly two decades of research, interviews, and fieldwork to tell the story of a vibrant musical tradition that straddles sacred and secular contexts. Most often identified with country and western bands, steel guitar is almost unheard of in African American churches--except for the House of God and the Church of the Living God, where it has been part of worship since the 1930s. Sacred Steel traces the tradition through four generations of musicians and in some two hundred churches extending across the country from Florida to California, Michigan to Alabama. Presenting detailed portraits of musical pioneers such as brothers Troman and Willie Eason and contemporary masters such as Chuck Campbell, Glenn Lee, and Robert Randolph, Stone expertly outlines the fundamental tensions between sacred steel musicians and church hierarchy. In this thorough analysis of the tradition, Stone explores the function of the music in church meetings and its effect on the congregations. He also examines recent developments such as the growing number of female performers, the commercial appeal of the music, and younger musicians' controversial move of the music from the church to secular contexts.
