Book A Life Everlasting

Download or read book A Life Everlasting written by Sarah Gray and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A donor mother’s powerful memoir of grief and rebirth that is also a fascinating medical science whodunit, taking us inside the world of organ, eye, tissue, and blood donation and cutting-edge scientific research. When Sarah Gray received the devastating news that her unborn son Thomas was diagnosed with anencephaly, a terminal condition, she decided she wanted his death—and life—to have meaning. In the weeks before she gave birth to her twin sons in 2010, she arranged to donate Thomas’s organs. Due to his low birth weight, they would go to research rather than transplant. As transplant donors have the opportunity to meet recipients, Sarah wanted to know how Thomas's donation would be used. That curiosity fueled a scientific odyssey that leads Sarah to some of the most prestigious scientific facilities in the country, including Harvard, Duke, and the University of Pennsylvania. Pulling back the curtain of protocol and confidentiality, she introduces the researchers who received Thomas’s donations, held his liver in their hands, studied his cells under the microscope. Sarah’s journey to find solace and understanding takes her beyond her son’s donations—offering a breathtaking overview of the world of medical research and the valiant scientists on the horizon of discovery. She goes behind the scenes at organ procurement organizations, introducing skilled technicians for whom death means saving lives, empathetic counselors, and the brilliant minds who are finding surprising and inventive ways to treat and cure disease through these donations. She also shares the moving stories of other donor families. A Life Everlasting is an unforgettable testament to hope, a tribute to life and discovery, and a portrait of unsung heroes pushing the boundaries of medical science for the benefit of all humanity.

Book The Kennedy Family Album

Download or read book The Kennedy Family Album written by Linda Corley and published by Running Press. This book was released on 2008-09-09 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Up until his death in 2004, Bob Davidoff had been the photographer in residence at the Kennedy's “Winter White House”—better known as their Palm Beach home. For almost fifty years, Davidoff chronicled the extended Kennedy clan on holiday, capturing the youthful JFK and his beautiful family during their moments of fun and relaxation. The legendary Davidoff was a fixture in the Kennedy Florida household, and many of his photos are part of the family's personal collections. Now, for the first time in book form, Bob Davidoff's Kennedy photos of their days in the sun—in Palm Beach as well as in Hyannis Port, Sun Valley, and other favorite getaway spots—have been collected in The Kennedy Family Album. Linda Corley, an Emmy Award-winning writer, provides the anecdotes behind the pictures and captures many of their unscripted moments, from Jackie surprising her husband on the tarmac of the Palm Beach airport to Rose leading a family sing-along. Most of these photos have never been seen by the general public, making The Kennedy Family Album a truly unique and unstaged portrait of “America's royal family.”

Download or read book Betty Kuhner written by Kate Kuhner and published by Gibbs Smith. This book was released on 2019-05-28 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A monograph of the groundbreaking photography of Betty Kuhner (1916–2014), who was the first to take midcentury family portraits of the affluent social set out of the studio and into the environment. Groundbreaking photographer Betty Kuhner truly revolutionized the American family portrait, taking it from the staid arrangement of mother, father and children dressed in their Sunday best, carefully arranged in front of the living room mantelpiece or on a sofa. Rather, she instructed her subjects to dress casually, many times similarly, and coaxed them to accompany her into the backyard, the garden or onto the beach. Once there, she would intuitively find the perfect location and, more importantly, exquisite light, all the while engaging Mother Nature and serendipity to serve as the ultimate stylist. Her long and prolific career built an archive of over five decades of extraordinary documentation of America’s most distinguished dynasties—with assorted Kennedys, Fords, and the families of style icons Lilly Pulitzer and Esteé Lauder included in her inspiring body of work. By choosing to work exclusively in black and white, Kuhner unknowingly created a powerful genre that would not only impact family photography, but also all fine contemporary wedding, portrait, fashion and advertising imagery as we now know it. Today, the black and white “environmental portrait” is considered the preeminent, highly regarded standard, thanks to one remarkable visionary—Betty Kuhner. This book has been been featured in national publications including PEOPLE Magazine, Garden & Gun Magazine, and Modern Luxury. Kate Kuhner, daughter of Betty Kuhner, is the owner of Kate Kuhner Photography in Palm Beach and keeper of her mother’s archive. Steven Stolman curated a retrospective on Betty Kuhner during her lifetime, is well versed on East Coast high society of the 1950s to the present, and is the author of Scalamandré: Haute Decor (Gibbs Smith, 2013).

They named it Broward, in honor of the governor whose Everglades drainage program had brought them such prosperity. Today, Broward is Florida's second largest county, with 1.6 million people. Book excerpt: This book tells the fascinating story of the artist who created the monumental sculpture in Memorial Park in Jacksonville, Florida. The sculptor Charles Adrian Pillars has remained largely unknown since the 1924 unveiling of his sculpture titled "LIFE," which today is regarded by many art critics as Florida's greatest outdoor work of classical bronze statuary. In tracing the life of this complicated and conflicted artist, author Wayne Wood reveals a broader story about the larger-than-life characters who intersected with Pillars and the great sweep of historical events that punctuated his life. The twists and turns and drama of Pillars's life makes this book a must-read for art lovers, historians, and casual readers who are seeking a rollicking true story that rivals the most compelling works of fiction.

Book Sears Family Portrait of the Artist

Download or read book Sears Family Portrait of the Artist written by Benjamin R. Perkins and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: SEARS Family Portrait of the Artist is a memoir that depicts the author's recovery from molestation that occurred approximately from his age 5 in 1987 until his age 8 in 1990 at the hands of a family friend. The author narrates from age 40 in the year 2022, though he begins the story by reflecting specifically on the year 2008 when he moved back home with his parents as an unemployed adult. The story moves back and forth in time between deep recollection of the 1980s and recent recollection of the 2000s and dramatizes episodes of traumatic flashback. The main plot thread follows his reconciliation with his family, whom he had grown resentful of. Near the end of the story, the author reveals that the molester attempted to contact him, unwelcomely, as recently as 2018. The voice, the candor, and the sensibility of the memoir was heavily influenced by contemporaneous memoirs such as Her by Christa Parravani, Poster Child by Emily Rapp Black, Men We Reaped by Jesmyn Ward, and Heavy by Kiese Laymon.
