Book Graduate Students Research about Community Colleges

Download or read book Graduate Students Research about Community Colleges written by Deborah L. Floyd and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-05-14 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book brings together a collection of chapters with different research designs that explore the research, practice, and policies of community colleges. The chapters in this book are the result of the graduate students and their faculty mentor’s scholarly work, and a rigorous special issue’s peer review process. Furthermore, this book offers recommendations on how to mentor graduate students, in the absence of research and mentorship on how to publish for graduate students and practitioner-scholars, as well as recognizing that graduate programs and professional associations are important on the socialization of practitioner-scholars. Each book chapter addresses the implications for practice and future research, policy for community colleges, and recommendation for change indicated by the research results. Five broad research themes, higher education policy, leadership practices and roles, network community, student success, and technology, emerged from the empirical articles and critical reviews. A final chapter shares advice and lessons learned from the 30 authors and mentors. With the exception of Chapter 14, the chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the Community College Journal of Research and Practice.

Book Data Use in the Community College

Download or read book Data Use in the Community College written by Christopher M. Mullin and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-04-19 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: American community colleges represent a true success story. With their multiple missions, they have provided access and opportunity to millions of students. But community colleges are held accountable for their services and must be able to show that they are indeed serving their variety of students appropriately. This volume speaks of the multiplicity of data required to tell the community college story. The authors explore and detail how various sources—workforce data, market data, state-level data, federal data, and, of course, institutional data such as transcript files—all have something to say about the life of a community college. Much like an orchestral score, where the different parts played by individual instruments become music under the hands of a conductor, these data can be coordinated and assembled into a message that answers questions of student success and institutional effectiveness. This is the 153rd volume of this Jossey-Bass quarterly report series. Always timely and comprehensive, New Directions for Institutional Research provides planners and administrators in all types of academic institutions with guidelines in such areas as resource coordination, information analysis, program evaluation, and institutional management.

Book Community Colleges and Economic Development

Download or read book Community Colleges and Economic Development written by Stephen G. Katsinas and published by American Association of Community Colleges(AACC). This book was released on 1989 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An overview is provided of the nontraditional, direct involvement of community colleges in economic development activities. While a review of the literature and a discussion of the factors leading to community colleges' participation in economic development are included, the primary focus of the monograph is on seven models of nontraditional involvement in economic development. Part 1 reviews the literature on economic development as it applies to community colleges and distinguishes between traditional and nontraditional activities. In part 2, key demographic, economic, and sociopolitical trends and forces are described that have provided incentives for community colleges' involvement in the economic growth of their regions and states. Case studies illustrating seven nontraditional models of direct involvement by community colleges are presented in part 3. Descriptions are provided of the Institute for Business and Industry at Lake Michigan College (Michigan); the Mid-Florida Research and Business Center, Inc., at Daytona Beach Community College (Florida); the Pueblo Business Assistance Network at Pueblo Community College (Colorado); the Office Automation Center at Trident Technical College (South Carolina); performance-based contracting at Florida Community College at Jacksonville; the Bevill Center for Advanced Technology at Gadsden State Community College (Alabama); and the international focus of the Center for Business and Industry at Miami-Dade Community College (Florida). Part 4 identifies key factors associated with the success of nontraditional approaches. (AYC)
