Book Florida and South Carolina as Health Resorts Classic Reprint

Download or read book Florida and South Carolina as Health Resorts Classic Reprint written by William W. Morland and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Florida and South Carolina as Health Resorts The constantly increasing travel of invalids to southern latitudes every year more and more arrests our attention, and it need hardly be said, in this presence, that this crusade after health is too frequently begun at the wrong time, imperfectly carried out when rightly begun, and, in very many instances, brought to a premature termination. Whether an invalid - and especially a pulmonary invalid - should go from home at all, should be left implicitly to his physician to determine, who, in addition to careful reflections upon the nature and stage of the malady, will do wisely to inform himself as to the "surroundings" awaiting his patient in the proposed place of his temporary sojourn, and also to assure himself of his ability to command comforts and attention when among strangers. It is worse than useless for those who have not means sufficient to be Well cared for, to leave their homes - the invalid cannot "rough it." Not every place where people get well from time to time, deserves the name of health-resort. No more - indeed, very often - than the earth-bath about which we were told, not long since, wherein, somewhere "out West," six victims of scurvy were buried, "up to their necks," and left over night. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Climatic Treatment of Disease: Western North Carolina as a Health Resort Based upon the belief that an aseptic atmosphere is of the first importance in the selection of a climate for the benefit of sufferers from a certain class of diseases, examinations of the atmosphere have been carefully made to demonstrate its purity. Miguel and Freudenreich found that microphytes were rare at 800 metres, and absolutely wanting-at metres above the sea level. For physical reasons, high alti tudes have been believed to be beneficial in early phthisis, and, influenced by the later demonstrationsof a bacillary cause, this aseptic state of the atmos phere is theoretically accepted as promising good results, and sanitary. Stations for mountain-air treat ment of consumptives have been established at sev eral selected points in the Alps, where the comforts of home life are furnished to invalids. Of these health resorts, Davos and St. Moritz are the most popular. St. Moritz is feet and Davosis over feet above the sea level, and the latter has become noted for winter treatment, although the average temperature from November to March' is only 23° F. The number of visitors at Davos last winter was over and careful provision is made for home comfort. The patients are urged to be active out of doors within the limit of fatigue. Each year adds to the number of invalids resorting to these mountain sanitaria, and the statistics show good re sults. It should, however, be borne in mind that the cases sent to these resorts are those selected in the incipient stages of disease, and this is to be taken into the account in the deductions that the recoveries average one-fourth also the time elapsing after the treatment has been too short to determine with accuracy the results. This pertains in criticism to the statistics of other similar localities, but it is by no means an easy task to secure satisfac tory data, and such a problem can never be subjected to a matliematicala analysis. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Resorts: With Notes Upon Their Climate If we, as a people, would more generally seek health in our own sanitaria, and our medical men would encourage their patients so to do, the value of these places of retreat for health would soon be appreciated and their fame become widespread. For the American, the health stations in his own land are preferable in that while he is seeking benefit in a change of climate, he is at home among his own countrymen, familiar customs, language and diet, a truly inestimable advantage in many cases of sickness. This book does not aim at a scientific consideration of the subject of climatology, but has been prepared in the hope that it may be of some practical service to the numerous health seekers in search of information regarding our climate and health resorts. Book Health Resorts of the British Islands Classic Reprint

Download or read book Health Resorts of the British Islands Classic Reprint written by Neville Wood and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Health Resorts of the British Islands Both in purpose and plan there are several points of differ ence in the present volume. It has had its origin in the belief that there was room for a work on the model of those manuals published on the Continent, in which health resorts as such, and matters of interest in relation to them, are the subjects exclusively dealt with. It was thought not only that such a publication might prove of service to the medical profession at home, but that it was time for some effort to secure inter national recognition for British health resorts. To aid in bringing their advantages to the notice of foreign physicians has, in fact, been a main object of these pages, arrangements for a French edition of which are in progress. As best serving the ends in view, attention has been focused on the principal resorts, those of minor importance being either briefly dealt with or entirely omitted. Book Forgotten Grasslands of the South

Download or read book Forgotten Grasslands of the South written by Reed F. Noss and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2012-12-03 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forgotten Grasslands of the South is the study of one of the biologically richest and most endangered ecosystems in North America. In a seamless blend of science and personal observation, renowned ecologist Reed Noss explains the natural history of southern grasslands, their origin and history, and the physical determinants of grassland distribution, including ecology, soils, landform, and hydrology. In addition to offering fascinating new information about these little-studied ecosystems, Noss demonstrates how natural history is central to the practice of conservation. Although theory and experimentation have recently dominated the field of ecology, ecologists are coming to realize how these distinct approaches are not divergent but complementary, and that pursuing them together can bring greater knowledge and understanding of how the natural world works and how we can best conserve it. This long-awaited work sets a new standard for scientific literature and is essential reading for those who study and work to conserve the grasslands of the South as well as for everyone who is fascinated by the natural world.
