Book excerpt: Join author and historian Carolyn Barske as she recounts the history of Florence, Alabama through the lens of over 200 vintage images. On the banks of the Tennessee River, below the once-formidable Muscle Shoals in northwest Alabama, sits the vibrant community of Florence. In the early 19th century, the Chickasaw Nation ceded lands to the US government, and in 1818 the Cypress Land Company held its first auction. The town grew quickly because of the efforts of the company's founders, which included Gen. John Coffee; John McKinley, who later sat on the US Supreme Court; and James Jackson, whose imported Thoroughbred horses became the bloodstock for some of Kentucky's finest racehorses. Schools, churches, hotels, and businesses soon filled the streets. For almost 200 years, the town of Florence has continued to grow, becoming home to the University of North Alabama and people like the "Father of the Blues," W.C. Handy; Maud Lindsay, who operated the first free kindergarten in the state; and four governors in Edward A. O'Neal, Emmett O'Neal, Robert M. Patton, and Hugh McVay.

Book excerpt: Originally formed as a railroad terminal, the city of Florence, South Carolina, has developed from a township with agrarian roots into a city that is an indispensable medical hub and a place of flourishing business and industry. After being named for Florence Henning Harllee, daughter of the first president of the Wilmington & Manchester Railroad, Florence was chartered in 1871 and then incorporated on December 24, 1890. It is now the largest city in the northeastern portion of South Carolina, and its humble beginnings have given way to a heritage rich in tradition and southern charm. Images of America: Florence showcases storied photographs, culled from personal collections, family archives, the City of Florence, and local businesses. Each view, coupled with fact-filled captions, reveals yet another part of the story of this fine example of a genteel, southern city.

Book The Reptiles of South Carolina

Download or read book The Reptiles of South Carolina written by Jeffrey D. Camper and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2019-05-07 with total page 407 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive illustrated guide to the Palmetto State's native species of reptiles From the lowcountry coastal tidelands to the upstate Blue Ridge Mountains and everywhere in between, South Carolina's varied landscapes and habitats are home to a fascinating and mysterious assortment of alligators, turtles, lizards, and snakes. The Reptiles of South Carolina, a comprehensive, illustrated guide to the Palmetto State, includes seventy-five native species of reptiles as well as introduced forms. Jeffrey D. Camper's accessible descriptions and intriguing details are designed to enlighten readers about this misunderstood and often-maligned group of secretive and ecologically important animals. Camper begins with a discussion of the state's mild climate and wide variety of natural habitats, including forests, plains, sandhills, wetlands, and barrier islands. The entry for each species provides a color picture, detailed descriptions of external appearance, variations in size and color, taxonomic keys, comparisons to similar species to aid in identification, and natural history. Camper also assesses the conservation status of each species and offers a detailed range map of where that species is known to occur in the state and another map showing its entire geographic range in the continental United States. The Reptiles of South Carolina includes 92 color and 79 black-and-white illustrations, a checklist by reptile family, a helpful glossary, and a short history of herpetology in the Palmetto State. This authoritative reference will prove invaluable to students, professional herpetologists, conservationists, ecologists, biologists, land managers, and amateur naturalists alike. A foreword is provided by J. Whitfield Gibbons, professor emeritus of ecology at the University of Georgia and former head of the environmental outreach and education program at the Savannah River Ecology Laboratory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This “masterfully woven…literary home run” (New York Journal of Books) follows four women across generations, bound by a beautiful wedding veil and a connection to the famous Vanderbilt family from the New York Times bestselling author of the Peachtree Bluff series. Four women. One family heirloom. A secret connection that will change their lives—and history as they know it. Present Day: Julia Baxter’s wedding veil, bequeathed to her great-grandmother by a mysterious woman on a train in the 1930s, has passed through generations of her family as a symbol of a happy marriage. But on the morning of her wedding day, something tells her that even the veil’s good luck isn’t enough to make her marriage last forever. Overwhelmed, she escapes to the Virgin Islands to clear her head. Meanwhile, her grandmother, Babs, is also feeling shaken. Still grieving the death of her beloved husband, she decides to move into a retirement community. Though she hopes it’s a new beginning, she does not expect to run into an old flame, dredging up the same complicated emotions she felt a lifetime ago. 1914: Socialite Edith Vanderbilt is struggling to manage the luxurious Biltmore Estate after the death of her cherished husband. With 250 rooms to oversee and an entire village dependent on her family to stay afloat, Edith is determined to uphold the Vanderbilt legacy—and prepare her free-spirited daughter Cornelia to inherit it—despite her family’s deteriorating financial situation. But Cornelia has dreams of her own, and as she explores more of the rapidly changing world around her, she’s torn between upholding tradition and pursuing the exciting future that lies beyond Biltmore’s gilded gates. In the vein of Therese Anne Fowler’s A Well-Behaved Woman and Jennifer Robson’s The Gown, The Wedding Veil is “a sparkling, fast-paced joy of a book that celebrates love, family, and the right to shape one’s own destiny” (Kristin Harmel, New York Times bestselling author).
