Book excerpt: A fourteen year old girl sits at her writing desk at the Vine Street Junior High School in Kalamazoo, Michigan and dreams of her future and writes during a class: "I like horseback riding. I was taught to ride by my father, who loved horses... I love to ride at any time of the day but I prefer the early morning or the evening before the sun has set. I also like to watch horse races which to me seem very exciting. My greatest desire is to someday, attend the Kentucky Derby. I think there must be nothing quite so thrilling as to see those fine three year olds leave the post, one of them to go down in history as winning the Kentucky Derby... Then there is swimming which I, literally adore. Moonlight swimming parties at the beach are grand... I like riding on racing coasters which are very thrilling if you get on a good one... I also like various scents of good perfumes. My favorite perfumes are 'Evening in Paris' or 'Spring-time in Paris, ' both are excellent and someday I will travel to Paris to personally try them all on!" Little Florence Mary Tracy would indeed go to the Kentucky Derby, travel to Paris and many places throughout Europe, would date for many years a race car driver and yes swim under the moonlight in summer beach parties in Hollywood, Florida. This is the story of my aunt, a dashing, lively and dynamic woman of her time who indeed lived a spirited life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, which describes the author’s one man crusade for a new penal rehabilitation program, known as The Seventh Step, takes you right into the drama of prison life. In 1963, Bill Sands, an ex convict, and the Reverend James Post formulated a self- help group in the Kansas State Prison. This first pre-release program adopted a slogan and guidelines that are the basis of The Seventh Step programs today. This was a danger-charged mission of an ex-inmate at San Quentin who crashed the Main Yard to prepare convicts for life in the “squarejohn” world—to help them go outside—and stay out. Faced with the hopelessness of the men who had been parolled but not released because no one would hire them, getting the men to face themselves and the outside world realistically, knowing about the inmates’ desire for revenge, all had to be channeled into an overwhelming desire for freedom. Their stories are fascinating and inspiring. Tremendously successful, the program reduced the number of men returning to prison for crimes committed after their release from 80% to 20% and spawned Seventh Step chapters across the United States. “a shocking chronicle of prison life . . . fascinating.” —BIRMINGHAM NEWS “I think it is a great book and I found it full of inspiration.” —NORMAN VINCENT PEALE

Book Minds Wide Shut

Download or read book Minds Wide Shut written by Gary Saul Morson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-01-31 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely exploration of intellectual dogmatism in politics, economics, religion, and literature—and what can be done to fight it Polarization may be pushing democracy to the breaking point. But few have explored the larger, interconnected forces that have set the stage for this crisis: namely, a rise in styles of thought, across a range of fields, that literary scholar Gary Saul Morson and economist Morton Schapiro call “fundamentalist.” In Minds Wide Shut, Morson and Schapiro examine how rigid adherence to ideological thinking has altered politics, economics, religion, and literature in ways that are mutually reinforcing and antithetical to the open-mindedness and readiness to compromise that animate democracy. In response, they propose alternatives that would again make serious dialogue possible. Fundamentalist thinking, Morson and Schapiro argue, is not limited to any one camp. It flourishes across the political spectrum, giving rise to dueling monologues of shouting and abuse between those who are certain that they can’t be wrong, that truth and justice are all on their side, and that there is nothing to learn from their opponents, who must be evil or deluded. But things don’t have to be this way. Drawing on thinkers and writers from across the humanities and social sciences, Morson and Schapiro show how we might begin to return to meaningful dialogue through case-based reasoning, objective analyses, lessons drawn from literature, and more. The result is a powerful invitation to leave behind simplification, rigidity, and extremism—and to move toward a future of greater open-mindedness, moderation, and, perhaps, even wisdom.
