Download or read book Atlas of Stem Anatomy in Herbs Shrubs and Trees written by Fritz Hans Schweingruber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-03-18 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work, published in two volumes, contains descriptions of the wood and bark anatomies of 3000 dicotyledonous plants of 120 families, highlighting the anatomical and phylogenetic diversity of dicotyledonous plants of the Northern Hemisphere. The first volume principally treats families of the Early Angiosperms, Eudicots, Core Eudicots and Rosids, while the second concentrates on the Asterids. Presented in Volume 1 are microsections of the xylem and phloem of herbs, shrubs and trees of 1200 species and 85 families of various life forms of the temperate zone along altitudinal gradients from the lowland at the Mediterranean coast to the alpine zone in Western Europe. The global perspective of the findings is underlined by the analysis of 500 species from the Caucasus, the Rocky Mountains and Andes, the subtropical zone on the Canary Islands, the arid zones in the Sahara, in Eurasia, Arabia and Southwest North America, and the boreal and arctic zones in Eurasia and Canada. The presence of annual rings in all life forms demonstrates that herbs and dwarf shrubs are an excellent tool for the reconstruction of annual biomass production and the interannual dynamic of plant associations. The common principle of the anatomical expression of secondary growth is a key factor in understanding evolution and adaptation processes in all life forms, from the 2 cm tall whitlow grass (Draba arctica) in the arctic to the 40 m tall beech (Fagus sylvatica) in Central European managed forests. The study opens vast fields of research for dendrochronology, wood anatomy, taxonomy and ecology.
Download or read book Vegetative Powers written by Fabrizio Baldassarri and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-05-25 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume analyzes the natural philosophical accounts and debates concerning the vegetative powers, namely nutrition, growth, and reproduction. While principally focusing on the early modern approaches to the lower functions of the soul, readers will discover the roots of these approaches back to the Ancient times, as the volume highlights the role of three strands that help shape the study of life in the Medieval and early modern natural philosophies. From late antiquity to the early modern period, the vegetative soul and its cognate concepts have played a substantial role in specifying life, living functions, and living bodies, sometimes blurring the line between living and non-living nature, and, at other moments, resulting in a strong restriction of life to a mechanical system of operations and powers. Unearthing the history of the vegetative soul as a shrub of interconnected concepts, the 24 contributions of the volume fill a crucial gap in scholarship, ultimately outlining the importance of vegetal processes of incessant proliferation, generation, and organic growth as the roots of life in natural philosophical interpretations.

Download or read book Parasitic Plants written by Ana Maria Gonzalez and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2022-01-26 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over six chapters, this book deals with different aspects of parasitic plants, from generalities to specific case studies. A large part of the book deals with holoparasites that cause damage in agriculture, such as those of the genus Cuscuta. Their biology, forms of management, interaction with hosts as transmitting vectors, and even their phytochemistry and medicinal uses are analyzed. Cases of parasitic plants approached from the cultural relationship with humans are presented for an area of Africa, as well as a review of the biology of the American genus Lophophytum, a holoparasite that is not harmful to agriculture and is even in danger of conservation.
Download or read book The Vegetative Key to the British Flora written by John Poland and published by . This book was released on 2020-01-13 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following rigorous testing throughout Britain and Ireland over the last 10 years, this second edition is a much revised version with re-written keys, additional species, phenology and, of course, many new novel identification characters. A few new illustrations have been added where space allows. In addition, the nomenclature has been updated in line with modern taxonomy. Each key has been carefully reviewed and revamped so this version aims to be quicker and more comprehensive in detail than its predecessor, greatly improving on the original work. Additional floral and fruiting characters have been added for some of the more difficult species making it more handy for casual field use.

Download or read book Aromatic and Medicinal Plants of Drylands and Deserts written by David Ramiro Aguillón-Gutiérrez and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-05-09 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The description and analysis of the Mexican and other countries desertic plants from the point of view of their use in traditional medicine and their potential use in integrative medicine is the overall theme of this book. Aromatic and Medicinal Plants of Drylands and Deserts: Ecology, Ethnobiology and Potential Uses describes the historic use of drylands plants, botanical and geological classification, also describes the endemic plants used in traditional medicine, going through the most relevant aspects of biomedicine and integrative medicine. The chemical and bioactive compounds from desertic medicinal and aromatic plants and the analytic techniques to determine chemical and bioactive compounds from the medicinal and aromatic plants are reviewed. Ethnobiology is detailed in the present book as well as the importance of the integrative medicine for the ancient and actual cultures. The book represents an effort to keep the ethnobiological knowledge of communities for the use of traditional desertic plants with the actual analytical techniques to unveil the chemical molecules responsible of the biological or biomedical applications. Features: • Describes the endemic plants used in traditional medicine • Includes the chemical and bioactive compounds from desertic medicinal plants • Addresses the analytic techniques to determine chemical and bioactive compounds • Represents an effort to keep the ethnobiological knowledge of communities To execute this book, there are collaborations by authors from different institutions in northern Mexico, which is where the arid and semi-arid ecosystems of the country are found. Although the subject of medicinal plants has been treated from different angles, this book offers a holistic and comprehensive vision of these important organisms of the Mexican desert, thus resulting in an updated work for specialized readers and for those who are beginning in this exciting theme.

Book excerpt: Attention was first directed toward this group of chemicals when it was found that a substance known as indole-acetic acid had plant growth-regulating properties. This discovery, which was at the time only remotely related to practical agriculture, suggested to scientists that there were many other chemically related substances capable of regulating plant growth. Efforts to adapt the use of these substances to agricultural practice have met with considerable success in connection with plant propagation and fruit production.
