Download or read book The Flora of Curacao Aruba and Bonaire Classic Reprint written by I. Boldingh and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Flora of Curacao, Aruba and Bonaire In continuation of his voyage to the Dutch West Indian Islands St. Eustatius, Saba and St. Martin, about which particulars are to be found in the first part of the Flora of the West Indian Islands), the author undertook a second voyage in 1909 1910 in order to study the flora of the Islands Curasao, Aruba and Bonaire. It was again on the suggestion of Dr. F. A. F. C. Went, Professor of Botany in Utrecht University, that this voyage was undertaken and it is principally owing to his exertions that the following corporations gave finantial support: de Maatschappij ter bevordering van het Natuurkundig onderzoek der Nederlandsche kolonien (Society for promoting the Physical investigation of the Dutch colonies), de Koninklijke Academie van Wetenschappen te Amsterdam (Royal Society at Amsterdam) which put the P. W. Korthals fund at my disposal, the Committee for the F. W. van Eeden fund, het Koninklijk Xederlandsch Aardrijkskundig Genootschap (Royal Dutch Geographical Society), het Xederlandsch Xatuuren Geneeskundig Congres (the Dutch Physical and Medical Congress) and het Provinciaal Utrechtsch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen (Provincial Utrecht Society of Arts and Sciences); also the Botanical laboratory contributed towards the expense of transporting the plant collections in exchange for which it received the collections. To all these corporations I wish to express here my sincere thanks. Het Provinciaal Utrechtsch Genootschap van Kunsten en Wetenschappen again subsidized in order to have this flora printed. Besides to the corporations mentioned the author is greatly indebted to Prof. Dr. F. A. F. C. Went and to his Excellency the Colonial Minister for his recommendation to the Governor of Curagao. Book 1 000 Places to See Before You Die

Download or read book 1 000 Places to See Before You Die written by Patricia Schultz and published by Workman Publishing. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 1217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world’s bestselling travel book is back in a more informative, more experiential, more budget-friendly full-color edition. A #1 New York Times bestseller, 1,000 Places reinvented the idea of travel book as both wish list and practical guide. As Newsweek wrote, it “tells you what’s beautiful, what’s fun, and what’s just unforgettable— everywhere on earth.” And now the best is better. There are 600 full-color photographs. Over 200 entirely new entries, including visits to 28 countries like Lebanon, Croatia, Estonia, and Nicaragua, that were not in the original edition. There is an emphasis on experiences: an entry covers not just Positano or Ravello, but the full 30-mile stretch along the Amalfi Coast. Every entry from the original edition has been readdressed, rewritten, and made fuller, with more suggestions for places to stay, restaurants to visit, festivals to check out. And throughout, the book is more budget-conscious, starred restaurants and historic hotels such as the Ritz, but also moderately priced gems that don’t compromise on atmosphere or charm. The world is calling. Time to answer.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The books in the Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series demonstrate the University Press of Florida’s long history of publishing Latin American and Caribbean studies titles that connect in and through Florida, highlighting the connections between the Sunshine State and its neighboring islands. Books in this series show how early explorers found and settled Florida and the Caribbean. They tell the tales of early pioneers, both foreign and domestic. They examine topics critical to the area such as travel, migration, economic opportunity, and tourism. They look at the growth of Florida and the Caribbean and the attendant pressures on the environment, culture, urban development, and the movement of peoples, both forced and voluntary. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series gathers the rich data available in these architectural, archaeological, cultural, and historical works, as well as the travelogues and naturalists’ sketches of the area prior to the twentieth century, making it accessible for scholars and the general public alike. The Florida and the Caribbean Open Books Series is made possible through a grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, under the Humanities Open Books program.

Book Coral Reefs of the United Kingdom Overseas Territories

Download or read book Coral Reefs of the United Kingdom Overseas Territories written by Charles Sheppard and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tropical UK Territories have extensive coral reefs. Huge parts of these areas are exceptionally rich, productive and diverse. Their marine biodiversity exceeds that of the UK itself, and several are already, or are planned to be, strictly protected. Some of these areas serve as reference sites for many other countries with damaged reefs and they are oases of tropical marine biodiversity in a fast-degrading world. This book reviews all of the UK reefs, from those scarcely known to those where substantial research has already been performed.

Book One Hundred Summers

Download or read book One Hundred Summers written by Vanessa Branson and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking the reader on a journey from the dying embers of Edwardian England, through the trauma of two world wars, the hedonism of London in the 1980s and 'Cool Britannia' in the 1990s right up to the present day, One Hundred Summers is a portrait of a century as it was experienced by one extraordinary family. Along the way, Vanessa Branson recalls the rough and tumble of her chaotic but happy post-war childhood; growing up alongside her older brother Richard, who was entrepreneurial even as a teenager, she would have a front-row seat at the birth of Virgin, one of the most remarkable success stories in British business. She goes on to share her many adventures in a fascinating life, from opening an art gallery on London's Portobello Road and founding an arts festival in Morocco, to turning an ancient palace into a world-famous hotel and finding a real-life Neverland in the Scottish island of Eilean Shona, where J. M. Barrie once wrote a screenplay for Peter Pan. Touching, humane and at times heartbreakingly honest, Branson's family memoir is a vivid and charming tapestry of English eccentricity, fortune, fate and passion.

Book Death on Nantucket

Download or read book Death on Nantucket written by Francine Mathews and published by Soho Press. This book was released on 2017-06-06 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Francine Mathews' no-nonsense Nantucket police detective, Merry Folger, is back on the case after nineteen years. Death on Nantucket, the fifth Merry Folger Mystery, is full of regional charm, a strong sense of local history, and foggy New England Island atmosphere. Spencer Murphy is a national treasure. A famous Vietnam War correspondent who escaped captivity in Southeast Asia, he made a fortune off of his books and television appearances. But Spence is growing forgetful with age; he’s started to wander and even fails to come home one night. When a body is discovered at Step Above, the sprawling Murphy house near Steps Beach, Nantucket police detective Meredith Folger is called in to investigate. The timing couldn’t be worse: It’s the Fourth of July, and tourists are arriving in droves to celebrate on Nantucket’s beaches, so the police force is spread thin. On top of that Merry is planning her wedding to cranberry farmer Peter Mason, and her new boss, an ex-Chicago police chief with an aggressive management strategy, seems to be trying to force her to quit. Merry can’t conclude the Murphy investigation quickly enough for him. As she grapples with a family of unreliable storytellers—some incapable of recalling the past, and others determined that it never be known—she suspects that the truth may be forever out of reach, trapped in the failing brain of a man whose whole life may be a lie.
