Book Bryophyte Flora of the Arabian Peninsula and Socotra

Download or read book Bryophyte Flora of the Arabian Peninsula and Socotra written by Harald Kürschner and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present flora thoroughly covers the bryophytes of the Arabian Peninsula and Socotra island, with keys to all species, notes on the occurrence of the species in the different countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Yemen) and distribution maps. In contrast, the arid and semi-arid parts of inner Arabia (winter rainfall area) are dominated by drought-adapted and drought-tolerant taxa of probably xerothermic-Pangaean and circum-Tethyan origin. They show a number of xeromorphic adaptations (xeropottioid and xerothalloid life syndrome) for life under desert conditions. The phytogeographical analysis of the bryoflora, as well as the distribution of thalloid and leafy liverworts, respectively acrocarpous and pleurocarpous mosses, demonstrate that there is a clear phytochorial border across the Peninsula, frequently correlated with climatic conditions (winter rainfall/summer rainfall line).

Book Vegetation Ecology of Socotra

Download or read book Vegetation Ecology of Socotra written by Gary Brown and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-22 with total page 383 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the unique flora of the Socotra Archipelago with its high degree of endemism has received much attention recently, little information is available on the vegetation and related ecological aspects. Based on their extensive field experience of the region, the authors have assimilated a vast amount of knowledge to produce this book, which gives a detailed insight into the plant ecology of Socotra, designated as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2008. The book is divided into seven chapters. After a brief introduction and overviews of important abiotic features, various aspects of the vascular flora are presented in Chapter 4, together with accounts of the bryophyte and lichen flora. Ecology and adaptive strategies of the plants are dealt with in Chapter 5, and Chapter 6 gives a concise description of the main vegetation units. Finally, important management issues of the vegetation are discussed, an essential topic to ensure preservation of the natural heritage of the archipelago.

Book Vegetation of the Arabian Peninsula

Download or read book Vegetation of the Arabian Peninsula written by S.A. Ghazanfar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The inspiration for this book came from our ten years of journeys and wanderings through the varied landscapes of Arabia, and in particular through those of its hospitable southeastern corner, Oman. We owe a particular debt to Sultan Qaboos University, which during this time has provided us with both a stimulating working environment and a home. Transliteration of Arabic place and other names into English script is a task fraught with difficulties. We have followed 'accepted' spellings wherever these were not contrary to our common sense, and in other cases we have rendered names into Roman English script using phonetic spellings. Our main task in this respect was to ensure conformity between the fIfteen contributing authors. Diacritical signs have mostly been avoided, since their use is neither widely followed nor readily understood. Arabic words which have been commonly taken into the English language, such as 'sabkha' for a salt flat and 'wadi' for a valley with a seasonal watercourse, are not italicised in usage. However, other Arabic terms which are occasionally used in English but not as widely known, such as harrah for a basaltic lava fIeld and hima for a traditional grazing reserve, are italicised throughout the text.

Book Guide to Standard Floras of the World

Download or read book Guide to Standard Floras of the World written by David G. Frodin and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-06-14 with total page 1136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This 2001 book provides a selective annotated bibliography of the principal floras and related works of inventory for vascular plants. The second edition was completely updated and expanded to take into account the substantial literature of the late twentieth century, and features a more fully developed review of the history of floristic documentation. The works covered are principally specialist publications such as floras, checklists, distribution atlases, systematic iconographies and enumerations or catalogues, although a relatively few more popularly oriented books are also included. The Guide is organised in ten geographical divisions, with these successively divided into regions and units, each of which is prefaced with a historical review of floristic studies. In addition to the bibliography, the book includes general chapters on botanical bibliography, the history of floras, and general principles and current trends, plus an appendix on bibliographic searching, a lexicon of serial abbreviations, and author and geographical indexes.

Not illustrated. 1888 edition. Excerpt: ...has existed it is impossible to doubt, and by it the vegetation of the Orient gained extension into Socotra. But there are those other Asian forms which do not occur anywhere in south-west Asia to account for--Indian and other Eastern affinities. How did they reach Socotra 1 An elevation of land that would unite Socotra and Madagascar with Africa--an elevation which certainly took place--would, if increased and continued over a wider area, produce some interesting changes in surface features. Not only would the Gulf of Aden disappear by the union of Africa with Arabia, but there would be no Persian Gulf, and the Euphrates would pour its waters through a delta extending over a large part of the Arabian Sea, and through this delta the Indus would also discharge, the coast-line of the Indiau Peninsula being advanced to some extent. South of the equator Madagascar would join the Seychelles, which in turn, through the Malha and Nazareth banks, would run into the larger Mascarene Islands. In this way, then, Africa would have an irregular coast-line prolonged greatly south of the equator into the Indian Ocean, and running up with an advance upon its present line until it reached its north-eastern limit outside and south of Socotra. Thence an advanced land-surface of Asia would extend across the Arabian Sea into the Indian Peninsula. It appears to me that we must assume that some such land-surface as this existed to aid us in explaining the migration westward to Socotra of Indo-Malayan types, several of which have a striking extension into Madagascar and the Mascarene Islands. Lieutenant-Colonel GodwinAusten asserts that the relationship of the Socotran land-shells are such as to warrant the conclusion of a prolongation of land-surface which...

Book The European Garden Flora Flowering Plants

Download or read book The European Garden Flora Flowering Plants written by James Cullen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-08-11 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Garden Flora is the definitive manual for the accurate identification of cultivated ornamental flowering plants. Designed to meet the highest scientific standards, the vocabulary has nevertheless been kept as uncomplicated as possible so that the work is fully accessible to the informed gardener as well as to the professional botanist. This new edition has been thoroughly reorganised and revised, bringing it into line with modern taxonomic knowledge. Although European in name, the Flora covers plants cultivated in most areas of the United States and Canada as well as in non-tropical parts of Asia and Australasia. Volume 5 completes the series, and includes many important ornamental families, such as Labiatae, Solanaceae, Scrophulariaceae, Acanthaceae, Campanulaceae, and the largest family of Dicotyledons, the Compositae.

Book Researching Biology and Evolution in the Gulf States

Download or read book Researching Biology and Evolution in the Gulf States written by Jörg Matthias Determann and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-25 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Officials and religious scholars in the Gulf states have repeatedly banned the teaching of the theory of evolution because of its association with atheism. But Jorg Matthias Determann argues here that, despite official prohibition, research on biological evolution has flourished, due in large part to the development of academic and professional networks. This book traces these networks through the history of various branches of biology, including botany, conservation research, ornithology and palaeontology. Typical of rentier societies, some of the scientific networks in this region consist of vertical patron-client relationships. For example, those in power who are interested in wildlife conservation have been known to offer patronage to biologists working on desert ecology. However, just as important are the horizontal links between scientists both within the Gulf region and beyond. Given the strengths and importance of these two forms of professional networks, Determann argues that we should look at the Arab world as an area interconnected with global science, and therefore fully integrated into the scientific and technological advances being pioneered worldwide."

Book Plant Ecology in the Middle East

Download or read book Plant Ecology in the Middle East written by Ahmad Hegazy and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 363 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This advanced textbook explores the intriguing flora and plant ecology of the Middle East, framed by a changing desert landscape, global climate change, and the arc of human history. This vast region has been largely under-recognized, under-studied, and certainly under-published, due in part to the challenges posed to research by political disputes and human conflict, and a treatise on the subject is now timely. The book integrates Middle Eastern plant geography and its major drivers (geo-tectonics, seed and fruit dispersal, plant functional types, etc.) with the principles of plant ecology. The authors include the many specialized adaptations to desert and dryland ecosystems including succulence, water-conserving photosynthesis, and a remarkable range of other life history strategies. They explore the formation of 'climate relicts', and describe the long history of domestication in the region together with the many reciprocal effects of agriculture on plant ecology. The book concludes by discussing conservation in the region, highlighting five regional biodiversity hotspots where the challenges of desertification, habitat loss, and other threats to plant biodiversity are particularly acute. Plant Ecology in the Middle East is a timely synthesis of the field, setting a new baseline for future research. It will be important reading for both undergraduate and graduate students taking courses in plant ecology, evolution, systematics, biodiversity, and conservation, and will also be of interest and use to a professional audience of botanists, conservation biologists, and practitioners working in dryland ecosystems.
