Book Flow Induced Structural Vibrations

Download or read book Flow Induced Structural Vibrations written by E. Naudascher and published by Springer. This book was released on 1974-08-23 with total page 775 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years there has been an unmistakable tendency for research in the fields of hydraulics and fluid mechanics to involve ever more sophisticated study of increasingly detailed aspects of problems, while in the process becoming further and further detached from the reali ties faced by practising engineers. At the same time, too many hy draulic engineers have continued to conduct model studies with the goal of obtaining ad-hoc solutions for specific problems, while direct ing little if any of their attention toward elucidation of the underlying mechanics and toward generalization of their results for future appli cation. It was against this background that the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (IUTAM) and the International As sociation for Hydraulic Research (IAHR) were approached and asked to cosponsor the Symposium on Flow-Induced Structural Vibrations, which would have as its objective the promotion of interaction between the active researchers and the practitioners, and of communication between the different disciplines concerned. To this end, invitations were extended to individuals who together represented the full range of the investigation-application spectrum, and contributions were so licited from scientists and engineers who, in general, approach vi bration problems along different avenues. In soliciting contributions to the Symposium it was emphasized that priority would be given to IV Preface papers which shed light on the constituent phenomena involved in vi bration problems and thereby enhance our understanding of the basic vibration-inducing mechanisms.

Book Unified Strength Theory and Its Applications

Download or read book Unified Strength Theory and Its Applications written by Mao-Hong Yu and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-01-08 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been ten years since I presented the paper entitled “A new model and theory on yield and failure of materials under the complex stress state” at the Sixth Conference on Mechanical Behaviour of Materials held at Kyoto, Japan in 1991. The proceedings edited by Jono and Inoue were published by Pergamon Press in 1991. At that conference Professor Murakami and I were invited to act as the chairperson and co-chairperson of a session, and I presented the paper at another session. Few days before the conference, I had given a seminar regarding the tw- shear strength theory and the unified strength theory at Nagoya Technological University. These were the first two presentations of the unified strength theory, although I had completed the research of the unified strength theory in 1990. The paper “Twin-shear strength theory and its generalization” was published in the English edition of Sciences in China, the top journal in China, in 1985. The th original generalized twin-shear strength theory was presented at the 16 International Theoretical and Applied Mechanics Congress held at Copenhagen in Denmark and MPA (MaterialPrüfungsAnstalt) at Stuttgart University, Germany in 1984. After this Congress I visited the MPA and School of Civil Engineering of Stuttgart University, and gave a seminar regarding the generalized twin-shear strength theory at MPA of Stuttgart University. Professor Otto Mohr (1835–1918) has had worked at the Stuttgart University. He was a very good professor, his lectures aroused great interest in his students.

Book excerpt: Biomechanics has a distinguished history extending at least to the 16th Century. However the later half oftbis century has seen an explosion ofthe field with it being viewed as affering exciting challenges for physical scientists and engineers interested in the life sciences, and wonderful opportunities for life scientists eager to collaborate with physical scientists and engineers and to render their scientific work more fundamental. That the field is now weil established and expanding is demonstrated by the formation of a World Committee for Biomechanics and the success and large participation in the 1st and 2nd World Congresses of Biomechanics, held respectively in San Diego in 1990 and in Amsterdam in 1994. With more than 1350 scientific papers delivered at the 2nd World Congress, either within symposia or oral or poster sessions, it would have been out of the question to try to produce comprehensive edited proceedings. Moreover, we are confident that most of the papers have been or will be published in one ofthe excellentjoumals covering the field. But of effort contributed by the plenary lecturers and the tutorial we thought that the large amount and keynote speakers of various symposia deserved tobe recognised in the form of a specific publication, thus also allowing those unable to attend the presentatiops . . tC\ sh?r~ in the findings. Furthermore, we feel that there is now a need to review aspects 'oftlie freld.

It includes the metal plasticity for Tresca materials, Huber-von-Mises materials and twin-shear materials and the geomaterial plasticity for Mohr-Coulomb materials, generalized twin-shear materials and the Unified Strength Theory.

Book Cardiovascular Fluid Mechanics

Download or read book Cardiovascular Fluid Mechanics written by Gianni Pedrizzetti and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-05-04 with total page 277 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents the state of the art in the interdisciplinary field of fluid mechanics applied to cardiovascular modelling. It is neither a monograph nor a collection of research papers, rather an extended review in the field. It is arranged in 4 scientific chapters each presenting thoroughly the approach of a leading research team; two additional chapters prepared by biomedical scientists present the topic by the applied perspective. A unique feature is a substantial (approx. one fourth of the book) medical introductory part, written by clinical researchers for scientific readers, that would require a large effort to be collected otherwise.

Book Circuit Analysis

Download or read book Circuit Analysis written by Leonard J. Tung and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2001 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is intended as a textbook for a first course in electrical engineering. It is divided into two parts, for a two-semester coverage. The first part deals with circuit elements, resistive circuits, circuit theorems, circuit topology, and the state-variable method. The presentation of the state-variable method is a special feature. The authors believe that the natural way to analyze RLC circuits is to use the state-variable method rather than second- or high-order ordinary differential equations. By choosing capacitor voltages and inductor currents in an RLC circuit as state variables, the so-called state equations can by systematically obtained through network topology. Of particular interest is the approach employing Thevenin's theorem and Norton's theorem to find state equations without using circuit topology. The second part of the book covers sinusoidal stead-state analysis, two-port networks, the Fourier series, the Fourier transform, and the Laplace transform. Great effort has been devoted to presenting the subjects of the Fourier series, the Fourier transform, and the Laplace transform with many practical circuits. Thus, we hope that the reader will be better motivated to learn rather abstract concepts such as complex frequency and frequency response.
