Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The river red gum has the most widespread natural distribution of Eucalyptus in Australia, forming extensive forests and woodlands in south-eastern Australia and providing the structural and functional elements of important floodplain and wetland ecosystems. Along ephemeral creeks in the arid Centre it exists as narrow corridors, providing vital refugia for biodiversity. The tree has played a central role in the tension between economy, society and environment and has been the subject of enquiries over its conservation, use and management. Despite this, we know remarkably little about the ecology and life history of the river red gum: its longevity; how deep its roots go; what proportion of its seedlings survive to adulthood; and the diversity of organisms associated with it. More recently we have begun to move from a culture of exploitation of river red gum forests and woodlands to one of conservation and sustainable use. In Flooded Forest and Desert Creek, the author traces this shift through the rise of a collective environmental consciousness, in part articulated through the depiction of river red gums and inland floodplains in art, literature and the media.

Book Coastal Landscapes of South Australia

Download or read book Coastal Landscapes of South Australia written by Robert P. Bourman and published by University of Adelaide Press. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geologically, the South Australian coast is very young, having evolved over only 1% of geological time, during the past 43 million years since the separation of Australia and Antarctica. It is also very dynamic, with the current shoreline position having been established from only 7000 years ago. The South Australian mainland coast is 3816 km long, with islands providing an additional 1251 km of coast, giving a total coastline of just over 5000 km. South Australian coastal landforms include cliffs, rocky outcrops and shore platforms, mangrove woodlands, mudflats, estuaries, extensive sandy beaches, coastal dunes and coastal barrier systems, as well as numerous near-shore reefs and islands. This book is a landmark study into the variable character of the South Australian coast and its long-term evolution.

Book excerpt: Floods in the Murray-Darling Basin are crucial sources of water for people, animals and plants in this often dry region of inland eastern Australia. Even so, floods have often been experienced as natural disasters, which have led to major engineering schemes. Flood Country explores the contested and complex history of this region, examining the different ways in which floods have been understood and managed and some of the long-term consequences for people, rivers and ecologies. The book examines many tensions, ranging from early exchanges between Aboriginal people and settlers about the dangers of floods, through to long running disputes between graziers and irrigators over damming floodwater, and conflicts between residents and colonial governments over whose responsibility it was to protect townships from floods. Flood Country brings the Murray-Darling Basin's flood history into conversation with contemporary national debates about climate change and competing access to water for livelihoods, industries and ecosystems. It provides an important new historical perspective on this significant region of Australia, exploring how people, rivers and floods have re-made each other.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From ABC Books' Australiana range comes GREAT AUSTRALIAN FLOOD STORIES, stories of humour, survival and courage in the face of one of our country's most powerful natural forces: flood. 'I tried to follow the road but the rushing waters pushed me into a deep rut where I lost my footing and was swept away downstream in the overflow of the river ... I got very frightened at the noise, and the water swept me along ... but I kept saying to myself, "Don't panic." Hampered by the big mail bag I let it go and within seconds the water swept it out of sight.' Lyn Berlowitz, Bullita Station, Nt From ABC Local Radio Manager of Emergency Broadcasting and senior journalist Ian Mannix comes a collection of 15 stories of humour, survival and courage in the face of one of our country's most powerful natural forces - flood. Across Grantham to Condamine, Kempsey to Bullita Station, flood has devastated this wide brown land, in some instances bringing much needed relief from drought, but in many others bringing tragedy, homelessness and a fight for survival. Ian Mannix charts the pattern of floods in Australia and tells amazing stories of danger and survival, from the women trapped in a house infested with snakes as the floodwaters rose ever higher, to the helicopter rescues of people whose homes were inundated without warning, to the brave townsfolk who saved their outback Queensland towns from the menace of the Warego River with all the odds stacked against them. As in Ian's previous book Great Australian Bushfire Stories, these fascinating accounts from the lips of those who have experienced disaster will give you an understanding of what it is like to face nature at its most deadly, how to prepare and how to recover from its shocking impact.
