The forests grow in areas that are annually flooded by large rivers during mean periods of up to 8 months and at depths of up to 10 m. Despite this severe stress, these forests consist of over 1,000 species and are by far the most species-rich floodplain forests worldwide. The trees show a broad range of morphological, anatomical, physiological, and phenological adaptations that enable them not only to survive the adverse environmental conditions, but also to produce large amounts of biomass when the nutrient levels in water and soils are sufficiently high. This is the case in the floodplains of white-water rivers, which are used for fisheries, agriculture, and cattle-ranching but which also have a high potential for the production of timber and non-timber products, when adequately managed. Latest research on ecophysiology gives insight how tree species adapt to the oscillating flood-pulse focusing on their photosynthesis, respiration, sap flow, biochemistry, phenology, wood and leave anatomy, root morphology and functioning, fruit chemistry, seed germination, seedling establishment, nitrogen fixation and genetic variability. Based on tree ages, lifetime growth rates and net primary production, new concepts are developed to improve the sustainability of traditional forest managements in the background of an integrated natural resource management. Book excerpt: Due to sea level rise, more frequent and longer duration floods are occurring in low-lying coastal forests of the Mid Atlantic. Increased flooding causes tree mortality followed by forest retreat. Previous efforts show that forest retreat is variable, however, especially in low-slope areas. Many factors likely drive this variability, so elucidating responsible mechanisms for retreat patterns, such as tree growth responses to flooding, will be important for implementing management tactics to achieve ecological goals, such as preventing forest loss. This dissertation uses tree ring analysis to study three species (Pinus taeda, Pinus rigida, and Ilex opaca) in Barnegat and Delaware Bays. Research focused on a) climate and water level relationships with tree growth; b) flood exposure and growth relative to water levels; and c) how climate change and rising sea levels might influence future growth patterns. Growth occasionally correlated with water level and climatic variables, but responses were site-specific. Counter to the expectation that tree growth inversely relates to high water levels, correlations were not always negative. Nonlinear responses to gradients in precipitation, temperature, as well as tidal water levels were also present. Future environmental conditions might benefit certain species (e.g., warmer winters for Pinus taeda), whereas others might be detrimental across sites (e.g., dryer springs). Growth responses to tidal water levels, either positive or negative, may be indicative of a transitioning system-showing that dendrochronological data are useful for determining coastal forest vulnerability to sea level rise. An improved understanding of the relative influence of climate and sea level rise on low-lying coastal forests will help resource managers make informed decisions on best tactics for sustaining these critical coastal habitats.

ÒGoing greenÓ means minimizing exposure to hazards by preserving natural buffers and integrating those buffers into artificial systems like levees or seawalls. ÒBeing fairÓ means looking after public health, safety, and the environment without increasing personal and social vulnerabilities. ÒKeeping safeÓ means a more cautionary approach when confronting disaster risks. Verchick argues that government must assume a stronger regulatory role in managing natural infrastructure, distributional fairness, and public risk. He proposes changes to the federal statutes governing environmental impact assessments, wetlands development, air emissions, and flood control, among others. Making a strong case for more transparent governmental decision-making, Verchick offers a new vision of disaster law for the next generation.

Book excerpt: The river red gum has the most widespread natural distribution of Eucalyptus in Australia, forming extensive forests and woodlands in south-eastern Australia and providing the structural and functional elements of important floodplain and wetland ecosystems. Along ephemeral creeks in the arid Centre it exists as narrow corridors, providing vital refugia for biodiversity. The tree has played a central role in the tension between economy, society and environment and has been the subject of enquiries over its conservation, use and management. Despite this, we know remarkably little about the ecology and life history of the river red gum: its longevity; how deep its roots go; what proportion of its seedlings survive to adulthood; and the diversity of organisms associated with it. More recently we have begun to move from a culture of exploitation of river red gum forests and woodlands to one of conservation and sustainable use. In Flooded Forest and Desert Creek, the author traces this shift through the rise of a collective environmental consciousness, in part articulated through the depiction of river red gums and inland floodplains in art, literature and the media.
