Book excerpt: Seeking to re-imagine the meaning and significance of the international border, Opening the Floodgates makes a case for eliminating the border as a legal construct that impedes the movement of people into this country. Open migration policies deserve fuller analysis, as evidenced by President Barack Obama’s pledge to make immigration reform a priority. Kevin R. Johnson offers an alternative vision of how U.S. borders might be reconfigured, grounded in moral, economic, and policy arguments for open borders. Importantly, liberalizing migration through an open borders policy would recognize that the enforcement of closed borders cannot stifle the strong, perhaps irresistible, economic, social, and political pressures that fuel international migration. Controversially, Johnson suggests that open borders are entirely consistent with efforts to prevent terrorism that have dominated immigration enforcement since the events of September 11, 2001. More liberal migration, he suggests, would allow for full attention to be paid to the true dangers to public safety and national security.

Book excerpt: Where Are We on the Prophetic Timetable? When Jesus’s disciples asked for His views on the end times, He pointed to the “days of Noah” as the key to unlock the timing of “the coming of the Son of Man.” But what exactly did He mean by that? Floodgates unravels precisely what happened in the Flood of Noah and explains why this important biblical event is so analogous to our day. By tracking humanity’s moral slide during Noah’s generation, we roll back the curtain on our own times in remarkable ways. We also discover a clear biblical paradigm for determining where we are on the prophetic timetable, based on the actual teachings of Jesus and the apostles. After reading Floodgates, you will know if the countdown to final judgment has already begun. Reflecting careful research and keen biblical insights, Floodgates reveals God’s righteous dealings with humanity and the fate that soon awaits those now in open rebellion against Him. Author David Parsons lays the axe to the root of this moral rebellion, found in the collapsing claims of Darwinian evolution. He also identifies God’s “end game”—His specific strategy—for how He wants to bring this present age to a close. As we draw nearer to that day, Jesus calls every believer to be salt and light in the world, warning people of the coming judgment and showing the way to eternal life in Him. This book is a powerful reminder that everyone has a choice to make concerning their ultimate destiny—and time is growing short.

Book The Rocks Don t Lie A Geologist Investigates Noah s Flood

Download or read book The Rocks Don t Lie A Geologist Investigates Noah s Flood written by David R. Montgomery and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2012-08-27 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How the mystery of the Bible's greatest story shaped geology: a MacArthur Fellow presents a surprising perspective on Noah's Flood. In Tibet, geologist David R. Montgomery heard a local story about a great flood that bore a striking similarity to Noah’s Flood. Intrigued, Montgomery began investigating the world’s flood stories and—drawing from historic works by theologians, natural philosophers, and scientists—discovered the counterintuitive role Noah’s Flood played in the development of both geology and creationism. Steno, the grandfather of geology, even invoked the Flood in laying geology’s founding principles based on his observations of northern Italian landscapes. Centuries later, the founders of modern creationism based their irrational view of a global flood on a perceptive critique of geology. With an explorer’s eye and a refreshing approach to both faith and science, Montgomery takes readers on a journey across landscapes and cultures. In the process we discover the illusive nature of truth, whether viewed through the lens of science or religion, and how it changed through history and continues changing, even today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In Closing the Floodgates, psychotherapist Dr. Ann Gillies has written a blockbuster of a book exposing the biased, unscientific, and corrupt methods used to promote the sexual revolution of the last sixty years. In her powerful and compelling analysis, she shows how the truth of scientific fact has been overturned in the interest of pleasure and personal feelings, and how a determined minority is using social engineering to reconstruct our social and moral worlds by redefining gender, sexuality and the family. She draws an alarming picture of the consequences: identity confusion among the youth; sexual abuse and victimization of children; soaring rates of suicide and sexually transmitted diseases; the embedding of false, unhealthy, and immoral teaching in the school curriculum; and the loss of freedom of speech and parental rights. While a few readers may find the level of detailed academic content challenging at times, Dr. Gillies is able to make professional findings understandable and real for the average person. For all the necessary research and statistical reporting, this is a gut-level book. In a time of culture wars, when the truth about gender and sexuality is under attack, this book sets the record straight. It issues a rallying cry to parents and others concerned for the future of the family and western society to be informed and take action before it is too late." —Dr. George R. Slater author of Along Comes God and Bringing Dreams to Life

Book Extra Time Beckons Penalties Loom

Download or read book Extra Time Beckons Penalties Loom written by Adam Hurrey and published by Headline. This book was released on 2024-09-26 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The long-awaited follow-up to Football Clichés, Adam Hurrey's cult classic about the language of football. "Adam Hurrey is the best observer of football culture in the world. He has a knack for either encapsulating something that's always nagged at you or nailing something you can't believe you haven't noticed before." Elis James "The funniest, smartest book on the language of football. It sends out a message, silences the doubters and lets its football do the talking ... a Rolls-Royce of a book." David Goldblatt *** Does language evolve? Yes, it does. Will it ever be acceptable for a football commentator to call a shot that bounces before it goes in 'a screamer'? No, it will not. As the self-appointed world expert on the subject, Adam Hurrey sets off to define the definitive rules of the language of football. He will answer the big questions such as: is it acceptable to say a player is 'breaking their silence' (it's complicated), can headers can be 'lashed' (anatomically impossible), whether a penalty shootout could ever be described as 'late drama' (truly abhorrent), how many games constitute a 'bumper' day of Premier League action (minimum of eight) and just how big a deficit constitutes 'a mountain to climb' (certainly not Liverpool going 1-0 down at home to Wolves in the third minute, Sky Sports). Along the way, Hurrey examines some case studies of how the football media has reached saturation point - the transfer rumour mill, the futile art of big-match previewing, the rise of (and backlash against) football jargon - and how its language has evolved to keep the machine going. Have we let the football lexicon spiral out of control? In finding out, this book will be exactly as gloriously pedantic as it sounds.

Book Opening Heaven s Floodgates

Download or read book Opening Heaven s Floodgates written by Jason M. Silverman and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The narrative of Noah's flood in Genesis draws perennial interest from scholars and the general public. Too often, however, historical and exegetical studies of the text, the story's reception, and discussion of theological appropriation remain aloof from each other, if not at odds. This volume takes the influential nature of the flood story as an ideal opportunity to bring some of these methods into dialogue. Opening Heaven's Floodgates offers sixteen new essays from international scholars which utilize some of the diverse tools that contemporary biblical scholars have. These are balanced between textual, historical, comparative, and theological approaches, ranging from Jewish calendars to modern ark builders, 1 Enoch to Ricoeur. Beyond each essay's new perspectives on the flood narrative, they are drawn together with an introduction focusing on the themes of myth and reception and two critical responses to the collection by Walter Bruggemann and Philip Davies. Opening Heaven's Floodgates will appeal to all interested in Genesis, the Pentateuch, early Judaism, mythology, and in the influence of the Bible in the West.

Book Open Constitutional Courts

Download or read book Open Constitutional Courts written by Patrick Keyzer and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sometimes a group is rich enough and philanthropic enough to fund a constitutional challenge to a piece of legislation. GetUp's victory in the High Court of Australia in August 2010 is an example - and as a result nearly 60,000 Australians were enfranchised to vote in the general election later that month.Often, however, a challenger doesn't have a wealthy backer and takes a huge risk in mounting the action. Would the Commonwealth cede standing? Would it waive its costs if the challenger lost?Patrick Keyzer's book is a powerful argument the constitututional justice requires the removal of this political, lottery element from a legitimate constitutional challenge. The private law paradigm of litigation, he says, is inappropriate in constitutional cases.Keyzer argues that an application for the judicial review of legislative action should be characterised as an exercise of political free speech, and that the rules governing standing and costs are incompatible with that freedom and should be abolished in constitutional cases. He demonstrates that the constitutional guarantee of judicial review gives rise to a right to know whether a law is constitutionally valid, providing a further rationale for open access. Such open access would supply our constitutional courts with a wider normative horizon, and lend legitimacy to judicial review and its outcomes.
