Book excerpt: The purpose of this book is to give an introduction to the most important aspects of suspended matter in the aquatic environment: its origin and composition, the concentration distribution, transport and deposition, and the most important physical-chemical-bio logical process that affects suspended matter: flocculation. In Chap ter 1 the development of suspended matter observation and study throughout history is given, with the coming of a more modern approach during the 19th century and the first half of the 20th century, and the development of the present science of suspended matter after 1945. The sources of suspended matter in rivers, lakes, estuaries, and the sea are discussed in Chapter 2, which includes the supply of detrital particles as well as the formation of new particles in the water (organic matter, carbonate, opal). The concentration distribution of suspended matter in rivers, lakes, estuaries, tidal is discussed in Chapter 3, to which is areas, lagoons, and in the sea added a discussion on the sampling of suspended matter and on methods to determine its concentration. Particle composition is treated in Chapter 4, to which is added a section (4. 6) on the compositional analysis of suspended particles. Also included is a discussion on particle surface characteristics and the adsorption of elements and compounds onto particles.

In addition to the formal presentation of papers - informal open discussions followed - the symposium included two stimulating workshops. An abundance of impromptu exchange filled unscheduled periods. Many of the contributors have incorporated in their pa pers the ideas and points raised in discussions following formal presentation and at other times. The reader thus actually profits from the various discussions throughout the meeting. The two half-day workshops were directed toward the subjects of sampling and concentrating suspended materials and in situ in strumentation. I have summarized the discussions from the two workshops for the reader and have correlated the material wherever possible in an introductory chapter. I have also included intro ductory material to acquaint the newcomer with the general field.

Book excerpt: The phenomenon of fine-grained sediment flocculation is well recognized in the marine and estuarine environments but flocculation in freshwater fluvial systems requires further examination. Because flocculation is known to affect sediment settling velocities, this phenomenon has important environmental implications from a sediment and contaminant transport perspective. The suspended sediment characteristics of Oakville Sixteen-Mile Creek in southern Ontario were examined using a new digitizing method developed for the study. The study examined whether flocculation was present in the freshwater fluvial system; how stable the flocs within the realms of the sampling and analytical method were; and whether flocculation was influenced by temporal and spatial trends for the independent variables of temperature, pH, conductivity, suspended solid concentrations, discharge (turbulence), bacterial densities associated with suspended solids, particulate organic carbon, and major ions.
