Book Floating Zone Refining of Boron Using Electron Beam Melting

Download or read book Floating Zone Refining of Boron Using Electron Beam Melting written by OHIO STATE UNIV RESEARCH FOUNDATION COLUMBUS. and published by . This book was released on 1961 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Boron rods, prepared by the reduction of boron trichloride with hydrogen, were refined by the floating zone process. The melting was accomplished by electron bombardment, using a 3000-v, 0.2 ampere beam. The band gap for a zone refined sample after three passes was 1.30 ev as determined from resistivity measurements. It was observed that carbon is an electrically active impurity, and that nickel and tungsten are not. (Author).

Book New Electron Beam Optics for the Preparation of Insulating Crystals by the Floating Zone Method

Download or read book New Electron Beam Optics for the Preparation of Insulating Crystals by the Floating Zone Method written by Charles Edward Ryan and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problems involved in the preparation of single crystals of refractory insulating materials are briefly outlined. The current status of the preparation of insulating crystals by the electron beam heated floating-zone method is reviewed, and the disadvantages are noted. The conception, construction and test of a new electron beam optics are described, and the advantages are pointed out. Sapphire, ruby and tungsten rods were zoned in testing the new optics. The influence of zone length, liquid - solid interface geometry, foreheater and afterheater temperature, and mechanical translation and rotation systems on crystal perfection are discussed. Book Preparation of High purity Single crystal Boron

Download or read book Preparation of High purity Single crystal Boron written by Claude P. Talley and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 1 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An apparatus has been built and used for producting sizable cylindrical rods of relatively pure polycrystalline boron. These rods run as large as 3 mm in diameter and 10 cm in length. They are produced by deposition on incandescent tungsten filaments whose diameters are as small as 6 microns. The reacting mixure is boron tribromide and hydrogen. An electron-beam floating-zone-melting apparatus has been built for zone refining of these rods. It operates at pressures less than 10(superscript -5) mm Hg. The high vacuum is maintained by an ion pump which provides an exceptionally clean vacuum. X-ray transmission photographs of boron through which the molten zone was slowly passed showed the disappearence of the tungsten wire and its accumulation at the interface between zoned and unzoned material. The zoned material was very strong compared to the unzoned material. During early zone-refining trials, a single crystal of beta-rhombohedral boron approximately 1.5 mm in diameter and over 1 cm in length was produced.

Book High purity Metals

    Book Details:
  • Author : George W. P. Rengstorff
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 1966
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 76 pages

Download or read book High purity Metals written by George W. P. Rengstorff and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The production and availability of thirteen high-purity metals are discussed in this report. Information about the purest available polycrystalline and single crystal forms of each of the metals is presented. Also included is information about less pure forms of the metal, usually including a grade which might be defined as commercially pure. Some of the newer techniques for analyzing or characterizing the purity of the metals are discussed without including methods of chemical analyses. The thirteen metals covered by this report include the refractory metals molybdenum, tungsten, columbium, tantalum, and rhenium; special light metals, beryllium, and titanium and metals with an intermediate melting point, iron, nickel, chromium, vanadium, and zirconium. The semi-metal, boron, is the thirteenth element. Individual sections for each of the metals are presented in alphabetical order.

Book Production of Advanced Materials by Methods of Self Propagating High Temperature Synthesis

Download or read book Production of Advanced Materials by Methods of Self Propagating High Temperature Synthesis written by Giorgi F Tavadze and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-01-17 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This translation from the original Russian book outlines the production of a variety of materials by methods of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SHS). The types of materials discussed include: hard, refractory, corrosion and wear-resistant materials, as well as other advanced and specialty materials. The authors address the issue of optimal parameters for SHS reactions occurring during processes involving a preliminary metallothermic reduction stage, and they calculate these using thermodynamic approaches. In order to confirm the effectiveness of this approach, the authors describe experiments focusing on the synthesis of elemental crystalline boron, boron carbides and nitrides. Other parts of this brief include theoretical and experimental results on single-stage production of hard alloys on the basis of titanium and zirconium borides, as well as macro kinetics of degassing and compaction of SHS-products. This brief is suitable for academics, as well as those working in industrial manufacturing companies producing hard alloys and composites for making metal-working machinery or drilling equipment.

Book Nuclear Methods in Science and Technology

Download or read book Nuclear Methods in Science and Technology written by Yuri M. Tsipenyuk and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-05-20 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The application of nuclear physics methods is now widespread throughout physics, chemistry, metallurgy, biology, clinical medicine, geology, and archaeology. Accelerators, reactors, and various instruments that have developed together with nuclear physics have often been found to offer the basis for increasingly productive and more sensitive analytical techniques. Nuclear Methods in Science and Technology provides scientists and engineers with a clear understanding of the basic principles of nuclear methods and their potential for applications in a wide range of disciplines. The first part of the book covers the major points of basic theory and experimental methods of nuclear physics, emphasizing concepts and simple models that give a feel for the behavior of real systems. Using many examples, the second part illustrates the extraordinary possibilities offered by nuclear methods. It covers the Mossbauer effect, slow neutron physics, activation analysis, radiography, nuclear geochronology, channeling effects, nuclear microprobe, and numerous other topics in modern applied nuclear physics. The book explores applications such as tomography, the use of short-lived isotopes in clinical diagnoses, and nuclear physics in ecology and agriculture. Where alternative nonnuclear analytical techniques are available, the author compares the relevant nuclear method, enabling readers to judge which technique may be most useful for them. Complete with a bibliography and extensive reference list for readers who want to delve deeper into a particular topic, this book applies various methods of nuclear physics to a wide range of disciplines.
