Book excerpt: Meredith and Marina's lives have been flipped upside down. When the translucent skirt that straight-A-student Meredith finds hidden on the beach gets wet, it transforms her legs into a mermaid tail. Despite the evidence in front of her, she insists that becoming a mythical creature isn't scientifically possible. Marina is allowed to experience one day per moon cycle among the humans. After hiding her tail on the beach that morning, she takes her first timid steps on land. When she returns at sunset to find it missing, she is left stranded and alone. For the first time in her life, Meredith doesn't have all the answers. As she searches for a way to return to normal before the next full moon, she makes waves among the school of mermaids. Meanwhile, Marina uncovers information about her past, and for the first time in her life, she must stand on her own two feet and take the lead on her own adventure. As Meredith senses her human side slipping away, a forbidden way to change back entices her. But it comes with a consequence: Marina wouldn't be able to return to the ocean.

Book The European Union Decides

Download or read book The European Union Decides written by Robert Thomson and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2006-09-14 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: European legislation affects countless aspects of daily life in modern Europe but just how does the European Union make such significant legislative decisions? How important are the formal decision-making procedures in defining decision outcomes and how important is the bargaining that takes place among the actors involved? Using a combination of detailed evidence and theoretical rigour, this volume addresses these questions and others that are central to understanding how the EU works in practice. It focuses on the practice of day-to-day decision-making in Brussels and the interactions that take place among the Member States in the Council and among the Commission, the Council and the European Parliament. A unique data set of actual Commission proposals are examined against which the authors develop, apply and test a range of explanatory models of decision-making, exemplifying how to study decision-making in other political systems using advanced theoretical tools and appropriate research design.

Book Achievements durativity and scales

Download or read book Achievements durativity and scales written by Zsofia Gyarmathy and published by Logos Verlag Berlin GmbH. This book was released on 2015-09-30 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contributes to the growing work on scale-based formal semantic approaches to verbal phenomena. It presents a new scale-based framework for both aspectual classes and grammatical aspect with the aim of offering an analysis of achievements in the progressive. In order to analyse these, the temporal trace function is relativised to a granularity parameter, and the semantics of the progressive operator is assumed to involve partitivity over scales of change. To this end, a novel concept of a scale of change is adopted, building on a bottom-up idea of associating scales with events and characterising verbal predicates via event-level scales. As a crucial departure from former scale-based approaches, predicates like "arrive" are associated with both two-valued and multi-valued scales of change. The new framework can then capture fine-grained aspectual class differences and predict the interpretations of the progressive for different aspectual classes.

Book Television Scales

Download or read book Television Scales written by Nick Salvato and published by punctum books. This book was released on 2019 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to reckon with the staggering volume of television materials, past and present? And how to comprehend all the potential, complex scales at which to grapple with television, from its tiniest units of audiovisual content to its most massive industrial coordinates and beyond? In TELEVISION SCALES, Nick Salvato demonstrates how the problem of scale in the field of television may be turned into a resource and a method for a television studies that would pay better attention to messy medial complexities, peripatetic critical practices, and vulgar psychogeographies. Modeling his investigative practice on the meta-critical writing of social anthropologist Marilyn Strathern in "Partial Connections" and elsewhere, Salvato composes surprising, partial constellations of television's elements. In the process, his consideration ranges from classic television sitcoms like "I Love Lucy" to contemporary reality series such as "The Biggest Loser," "Iron Chef," and "House Hunters International." He simultaneously pores over a number of key television phenomena, including technological mystification, performers' charismatic displays, binge viewing, and devoted fandom. An experiment in style and form, TELEVISION SCALES maps, weighs, and rules television, while also undoing these very strategies for evaluating the medium. ABOUT THE AUTHOR NICK SALVATO is Professor and Chair of Performing and Media Arts at Cornell University. He is the author of "Uncloseting Drama: American Modernism and Queer Performance" (Yale, 2010), "Knots Landing" (Wayne State, 2015), and "Obstruction" (Duke, 2016). His essays have appeared in numerous venues, including Camera Obscura, Critical Inquiry, and Discourse.

Book Nanoscale Device Physics

  • Author : Sandip Tiwari
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2017-03-31
  • ISBN : 0191078042
  • Pages : 682 pages

Download or read book Nanoscale Device Physics written by Sandip Tiwari and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 682 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nanoscale devices differ from larger microscale devices because they depend on the physical phenomena and effects that are central to their operation. This textbook illuminates the behavior of nanoscale devices by connecting them to the electronic, as well as magnetic, optical and mechanical properties, which fundamentally affect nanoscale devices in fascinating ways. Their small size means that an understanding of the phenomena measured is even more important, as their effects are so dominant and the changes in scale of underlying energetics and response are significant. Examples of these include classical effects such as single electron effects, quantum effects such as the states accessible as well as their properties; ensemble effects ranging from consequences of the laws of numbers to changes in properties arising from different magnitudes of the interactions, and others. These interactions, with the limits on size, make their physical behavior interesting, important and useful. The collection of four textbooks in the Electroscience Series culminates in a comprehensive understanding of nanoscale devices — electronic, magnetic, mechanical and optical — in the 4th volume. The series builds up to this last subject with volumes devoted to underlying semiconductor and solid-state physics.

Download or read book Scale Invariance and Beyond written by B. Dubrulle and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-09 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an excellent introduction to the concept of scale invariance, which is a growing field of research with wide applications. It describes where and how symmetry under scale transformation (and its various forms of partial breakdown) can be used to analyze solutions of a problem without the need to explicitly solve it. The first part gives descriptions of tools and concepts; the second is devoted to recent attempts to go beyond the invariance or symmetry breaking, to discuss causes and consequences, and to extract useful information about the system. Examples are carefully worked out in fields as diverse as condensed matter physics, population dynamics, earthquake physics, turbulence, cosmology and finance.
