About the AuthorBorn weeks before the start of the 1960s, Douglas fitted in very well at school until he had to learn something. On leaving school at 16 he found employment working in the cartographic drawing office at BP in Aberdeen. To fulfil his creative side, he invented the poet Sid Ozalid, and went on to perform for over 30 years on stage, radio and TV. At the turn of the century, Douglas suffered mental health issues and stopped both writing and performing. Over a period of time and with the help of friends and colleagues he managed to get back to work and establish himself as a successful Facilitator and Change Manager. Douglas has gone on a number of sponsored cycle rides and raised thousand of pounds for mental health charities. In 2010 he started performing again with gigs in London, Aberdeen, Amsterdam and on the moon.

Flying a Single Otter on floats out of Norman Wells in the Northwest Territories added hundreds of hours of float time to my logbook. I also accumulated many hours on skis and large high flotation tires in the high Arctic Islands and northern Greenland. These stories and poems were written over many years while I was flying in the Canadian Arctic, the Antarctic, South America and in many other parts of the world. They are stories of adventure, humor and tragedy, tales of landings on grassy jungle strips, snow, glaciers, ice, rivers, lakes and some of the busiest airports in the world. These stories are not just about the flying, they involve the people I have flown with and flown for and many others who are part of the aviation industry. I have tried to avoid concentrating too much on the difficulties and dangers involved in this type of flying. While there was no shortage of adventures, there were also many beautiful and fun times that I hope I've done justice to.

Formerly a Spanish land grant known as Morris Cove, the town began to assume its modern shape in 1895 when Seabrook Sydnor purchased part of the Morris league and platted the town site. Brothers Albert and Ernest Fay founded the Seabrook Shipyard in 1938, which went on to build submarine chasers and rescue boats during World War II. The year 1961 was a landmark moment for Seabrook: Hurricane Carla hit on September 11, and a week later, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announced that its Manned Spaceflight Center would be built in nearby Clear Lake, launching a period of accelerated growth. Fearing annexation by Houston or La Porte, Seabrook leaders took steps toward incorporation that same year. Today Seabrook is listed on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail and is part of the third largest boating community in the United States.
