Book Flight Tests of a Leading edge Area Suction on a Fighter type Airplane with a 35 Degree Sweptback Wing

Download or read book Flight Tests of a Leading edge Area Suction on a Fighter type Airplane with a 35 Degree Sweptback Wing written by Richard S. Bray and published by . This book was released on 1955 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tests have been made to determine the flight characteristics of an F-86F airplane equipped with a leading-edge area-suction boundary-layer-control system, and to investigate the possible operational limitations imposed on a fighter-type airplane by such an installation. The results of the flight tests are compared with those of full-scale wind-tunnel tests of a similar installation on a model incorporating F-86 wing panels. The basic porous-area distribution tested extended the full length of the wing leading edge. Suction power was provided by a modified turbosupercharger which was driven by air bled from the compressor of the airplane's jet engine.

Book A History of Suction Type Laminar Flow Control with Emphasis on Flight Research

Download or read book A History of Suction Type Laminar Flow Control with Emphasis on Flight Research written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2013-11 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Laminar-flow control is an area of aeronautical research that has a long history at NASA's Langley Research Center, Dryden Flight Research Center, their predecessor organizations, and elsewhere. In this monograph, Albert L. Braslow, who spent much of his career at Langley working with this research, presents a history of that portion of laminar-flow technology known as active laminar-flow control, which employs suction of a small quantity of air through airplane surfaces. This important technique offers the potential for significant reduction in drag and, thereby, for large increases in range or reductions in fuel usage for aircraft. For transport aircraft, the reductions in fuel consumed as a result of laminar-flow control may equal 30 percent of present consumption. Given such potential, it is obvious that active laminar-flow control with suction is an important technology. In this study, the author covers the early history of the subject and brings the story all the way to the mid-1990s with an emphasis on flight research, much of which occurred at Dryden.

Book Simulation for Aerospace Research

Download or read book Simulation for Aerospace Research written by North Atlantic Treaty Organization. Advisory Group for Aeronautical Research and Development and published by . This book was released on 1964 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This AGARDograph contains eight papers presented at the 24th AGARD Flight Mechanics Panel Meeting, Ames Research Center, California, USA, in February 1964. Three major aspects of simulation are dealt with. First, the electro-mechanical-optical systems forming the simulation hardware and the associated computing facilities; second, examples of simulation research applied to aircraft problems; and, third, examples of simulation research applied to spacecraft problems. A discussion of the simulation research problem from a human engineering standpoint precedes the hardware, aircraft and spacecraft sections. (Author).

Book A Flight Investigation of the Practical Problems Associated with Porous leading edge Suction

Download or read book A Flight Investigation of the Practical Problems Associated with Porous leading edge Suction written by Paul A. Hunter and published by . This book was released on 1954 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A flight investigation has been made of the practical problems associated with the use of porous-leading-edge suction. The wing leading edge of the test airplane was porous over approximately 83 percent of the span and the first 8 percent of the chord of the upper surface. Various other extents of suction area within these limits were also tested.

Book Investigation of the Use of Area Suction to Increase the Effectiveness of Trailing edge Flaps of Various Spans on a Wing of 45 Degree Sweepback and Aspect Ratio 6

Download or read book Investigation of the Use of Area Suction to Increase the Effectiveness of Trailing edge Flaps of Various Spans on a Wing of 45 Degree Sweepback and Aspect Ratio 6 written by Roy N. Griffin and published by . This book was released on 1956 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation was made of a model with a wing of 45 degree sweepback and aspect ratio of 6 to determine the aerodynamic characteristics and suction requirements for boundary-layer control by means of area suction applied to trailing-edge flaps. Included in this study were limited tests to use the differentially deflected flaps for lateral control. Flap spans extending from 0.12 b/2 to 0.50, 0.66, and 0.83 b/2 were tested at various flap deflections at 46 degrees and 65 degrees on the 0.12 to 0.50 b/2 spans with boundary-layer control applied. A limited number of the tests were made with area suction applied to the wing leading edge.
