Book Geometry Modeling and Adaptive Control of Air breathing Hypersonic Vehicles

Download or read book Geometry Modeling and Adaptive Control of Air breathing Hypersonic Vehicles written by Tyler J. Vick and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Air-breathing hypersonic vehicles have the potential to provide global reach and affordable access to space. Recent technological advancements have made scramjet-powered flight achievable, as evidenced by the successes of the X-43A and X-51A flight test programs over the last decade. Air-breathing hypersonic vehicles present unique modeling and control challenges in large part due to the fact that scramjet propulsion systems are highly integrated into the airframe, resulting in strongly coupled and often unstable dynamics. Additionally, the extreme flight conditions and inability to test fully integrated vehicle systems larger than X-51 before flight leads to inherent uncertainty in hypersonic flight. This thesis presents a means to design vehicle geometries, simulate vehicle dynamics, and develop and analyze control systems for hypersonic vehicles. First, a software tool for generating three-dimensional watertight vehicle surface meshes from simple design parameters is developed. These surface meshes are compatible with existing vehicle analysis tools, with which databases of aerodynamic and propulsive forces and moments can be constructed. A six-degree-of-freedom nonlinear dynamics simulation model which incorporates this data is presented. Inner-loop longitudinal and lateral control systems are designed and analyzed utilizing the simulation model. The first is an output feedback proportional-integral linear controller designed using linear quadratic regulator techniques. The second is a model reference adaptive controller (MRAC) which augments this baseline linear controller with an adaptive element. The performance and robustness of each controller are analyzed through simulated time responses to angle-of-attack and bank angle commands, while various uncertainties are introduced. The MRAC architecture enables the controller to adapt in a nonlinear fashion to deviations from the desired response, allowing for improved tracking performance, stability, and robustness.

Book Airbreathing Hypersonic Propulsion

Download or read book Airbreathing Hypersonic Propulsion written by Claudio Bruno and published by Springer. This book was released on 2023-05-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book details science of hypersonics especially focusing on propulsion aspects such as supersonic combustion ramjets and their applications, and also includes lift and drag in hypersonic flight and their mathematical and physical explanation. It provides charts and data from hypersonic testing and measurements from actual vehicles and engines built in the past. Criteria to dimension hypersonic powered and unpowered vehicles (gliders) based on fundamental fluid dynamics and backed by flight testing; criteria to preliminary sizing vehicles and preliminary dimensioning of supersonic combustors are introduced. The book will serve better theoretical understanding of drag, lift and how to apply them to the design of hypersonic vehicles, as well as data to size vehicles and supersonic combustion ramjet (SCRJ) systems. This book will be a useful reference for researchers and designers in hypersonic vehicles but also second or third-year graduate students.

Book Hypersonic Flight Testing

Download or read book Hypersonic Flight Testing written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The challenges of hypersonic system development require a combination of integrated ground testing, flight testing, and computational/simulation approaches. This report addresses the role of flight testing in the triad of development approach and is sub-divided into three parts: Propulsion, Aerothermal and Extrapolation of ground test data to flight. The reasons for propulsion flight test are illustrated by specific mini-case studies. The second part reviews some of the fundamental issues of flight testing and provides an overview of the aerothermal techniques. Specific examples include heat-transfer gage measurements and some of the common problems that have been encountered. The third part of this report discusses the initial flights of the Space Shuttle which uncovered a number of differences between preflight aerodynamic predictions and actual flight data. Most notable among these discrepancies was for longitudinal trim during high-speed re-entry. To investigate these differences, several computer codes were applied to a modified Space Shuttle Orbiter to determine aerodynamic parameters over a wide range of conditions. Computations were carried out for wind tunnel conditions and flight conditions to assess Mach number, real gas, and viscous effects on the reentry aerodynamics of the orbiter. flight-testing, Aerothermal techniques, Hypersonic vehicles, Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulations, High-speed re-entry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some sixty years after the experimental flights of the North American X-15 hypersonic rocket-powered aircraft, sustained hypervelocity travel is still the next frontier in high-speed transportation. Today, there is much excitement and interest regarding hypersonic vehicles. In fact, many aerospace agencies, large industries, and several start-ups are involved in design activities and experimental campaigns both in wind tunnels and in-flight with full-scale experimental flying test beds and prototypes to make hypersonic travel almost as easy and convenient as airliner travel. Achieving this goal will radically revolutionize the future of civil transportation. This book contains valuable contributions that focus on various design issues related to hypersonic aircraft.

Book Hypersonic Research Vehicle Hrv Real Time Flight Test Support Feasibility and Requirements Study Part 2

Download or read book Hypersonic Research Vehicle Hrv Real Time Flight Test Support Feasibility and Requirements Study Part 2 written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-04 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The requirements are assessed for the use of remote computation to support HRV flight testing. First, remote computational requirements were developed to support functions that will eventually be performed onboard operational vehicles of this type. These functions which either cannot be performed onboard in the time frame of initial HRV flight test programs because the technology of airborne computers will not be sufficiently advanced to support the computational loads required, or it is not desirable to perform the functions onboard in the flight test program for other reasons. Second, remote computational support either required or highly desirable to conduct flight testing itself was addressed. The use is proposed of an Automated Flight Management System which is described in conceptual detail. Third, autonomous operations is discussed and finally, unmanned operations.
