Book V STOL Dynamics Control and Flying Qualities

Download or read book V STOL Dynamics Control and Flying Qualities written by James A. Franklin and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication presents materials that constituted the lectures presented by the author as part of Course AA 234 Dynamics, Control, and Flying Qualities of V/STOL Aircraft that was taught in the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Stanford University. It covers representative operations of vertical and short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) aircraft, a discussion of the pilot's strategy in controlling these aircraft, the equations of motion pertinent to V/STOL tasks, and their application in the analysis of longitudinal and lateral-directional control in hover and forward flight. Following that development, which applies to the characteristics of the basic airframe and propulsion system, the text concludes with a discussion of the contributions of control augmentation in specific flight tasks and of the integration of modern electronic displays with these controls.

Book Application of Manual Control Display Theory to the Development of Flight Director Systems for STOL Aircraft

Download or read book Application of Manual Control Display Theory to the Development of Flight Director Systems for STOL Aircraft written by Richard H. Klein and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 119 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report represents an application of pilot models and closed-loop system methods to the analysis and design of three-axis flight director systems for STOL aircraft in the landing approach mode. The basic principle is that there are effective flight director plus vehicle controlled element dynamics that are preferred from the standpoint of pilot response and system performance. This leads to requirements and analytical procedures which define how to select, weight, and equalize the potential feedbacks. A summary of the design procedure and estimates of the necessary feedback quantities (with their associated weighting and equalization), pilot dynamics, pilot commentary, and closed-loop system performance represent the output of the analytical procedure. Book Dynamics Control and Flying Qualities of V STOL Aircraft

Download or read book Dynamics Control and Flying Qualities of V STOL Aircraft written by James A. Franklin and published by AIAA. This book was released on 2002 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation This text presents the principles of dynamics and control for vertical, short take-off landing (V/STOL) aircraft. It is the first book of its kind. It is intended for graduate students and professionals in aeronautics who have knowledge of linear systems analysis, aircraft static, dynamic stability, and control. The text begins with a discussion of V/STOL aircraft operations. Control strategies, equations of motion, longitudinal and lateral-directional flying qualities in both hover and forward flight, wind and turbulence responses, and control augmentation and cockpit displays are covered. Specific examples of the YAV-8B Harrier and XV-15 Tilt Rotor aircraft are used to illustrate actual V/STOL dynamic and control characteristics.

Book Flight Test Evaluation of STOL Control and Flight Director Concepts in a Powered Lift Aircraft Flying Curved Decelerating Approaches Evaluation Des Essais en Vol D un Directeur de Vol Et Des Commands D un Adac Portance Assistee Evoluanten Approche Curviligne en Deceleration

Download or read book Flight Test Evaluation of STOL Control and Flight Director Concepts in a Powered Lift Aircraft Flying Curved Decelerating Approaches Evaluation Des Essais en Vol D un Directeur de Vol Et Des Commands D un Adac Portance Assistee Evoluanten Approche Curviligne en Deceleration written by W. S. Hindson and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flight tests were carried out to assess the feasibility of piloted steep, curved, and decelerating-approach profiles in powered-lift STOL aircraft. Several STOL control concepts representative of a variety of aircraft were evaluated in conjunction with suitably designed flight directors. The tests were carried out in a real navigation environment, employed special electronic cockpit displays, and included the development of operational procedures considered appropriate to this class of aircraft. Data are presented describing the performance achieved and the control utilization involved in flying 180 deg turning, descending, and decelerating-approach profiles to landing. The results suggest that such moderately complex piloted instrument approaches may indeed be feasible from a pilot acceptance point of view, given an acceptable navigation environment. Systems with the capability of those used in this experiment can provide the potential of achieving instrument operations on curved, descending, and decelerating landing approaches to weather minima corresponding to CTOL Category II criteria, while also providing a means of realizing more efficient operations during visual flight conditions.
