Book Only Here For A Visit

Download or read book Only Here For A Visit written by Alan Brazil and published by Random House. This book was released on 2020-10-29 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'The only book that will give you a hangover' Chris Evans Breakfast Show --- The hilarious, no holds barred autobiography from sporting legend and broadcaster Alan Brazil. As Alan recounts tales from his extraordinary life, he relives the sporting occasions, radio broadcasts and famously long drinking sessions that have defined his career. He takes readers inside the talkSPORT studio for a behind-the-scenes view of his most memorable interviews, and talks for the first time about the on-pitch rivalries and dressing room debriefs of his footballing career. With his typically outspoken and irreverent delivery, Alan shares everything from his thoughts on how the sports he loves have changed to his top tips for picking winners (and many losers) at Cheltenham. And he revels in wine-soaked jaunts in the South of France and late-night supermarket sweeps with Ray Parlour - if you can keep up. Packed full of never-before-told stories, refreshing appraisals, sporting controversy and a cast of larger-than-life characters, this is a brutally honesty and wickedly funny insight into an extraordinary life.

Book excerpt: Jaded event planner Kaycee Caraway’s life is about to take a hair-raising turn when murder hits home in this delightfully haunting novel by Katy Lewis. Meet Kaycee Caraway – part Martha Stewart, part Inspector Clouseau. When she finds the body of her ex-husband Joey on his kitchen floor, it’s up to Kaycee to find his killer if she ever hopes to get his spirit to pass to the other side … and out of her life. It’s bad enough his ghost is naked, but Joey doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to leave. The skeletons that creep out of Joey’s closet make solving the case thorny. She sure doesn’t need the distraction of her irrepressible mother, who wants her to find a good man, her giddy father, who’s infatuated with a cat-lady, or her self-absorbed sisters, who find fidelity too restricting. When her one source of authoritative help turns out to be a brooding detective who’s down on women, she discovers her troubles are just beginning.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A powerful thriller about the ways an entire life can change in one night: A flight attendant wakes up in the wrong hotel, in the wrong bed, with a dead man—and no idea what happened. • Don't miss the acclaimed HBO Max series! Cassandra Bowden is no stranger to hungover mornings. She's a binge drinker, her job with the airline making it easy to find adventure, and the occasional blackouts seem to be inevitable. She lives with them, and the accompanying self-loathing. When she awakes in a Dubai hotel room, she tries to piece the previous night back together, counting the minutes until she has to catch her crew shuttle to the airport. She quietly slides out of bed, careful not to aggravate her already pounding head, and looks at the man she spent the night with. She sees his dark hair. His utter stillness. And blood, a slick, still wet pool on the crisp white sheets. Afraid to call the police—she's a single woman alone in a hotel room far from home—Cassie begins to lie. She lies as she joins the other flight attendants and pilots in the van. She lies on the way to Paris as she works the first class cabin. She lies to the FBI agents in New York who meet her at the gate. Soon it's too late to come clean-or face the truth about what really happened back in Dubai. Could she have killed him? If not, who did? Set amid the captivating world of those whose lives unfold at forty thousand feet, The Flight Attendant unveils a spellbinding story of memory, of the giddy pleasures of alcohol and the devastating consequences of addiction, and of murder far from home. Look for Chris Bohjalian's new novel, The Lioness!

Book Once You Go Black

Download or read book Once You Go Black written by Robert F. Reid-Pharr and published by NYU Press. This book was released on 2007-07-01 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2007 Lambda Literary Award Finalist, LGBT Studies Richard Wright. Ralph Ellison. James Baldwin. Literary and cultural critic Robert Reid-Pharr asserts that these and other post-World War II intellectuals announced the very themes of race, gender, and sexuality with which so many contemporary critics are now engaged. While at its most elemental Once You Go Black is an homage to these thinkers, it is at the same time a reconsideration of black Americans as agents, and not simply products, of history. Reid-Pharr contends that our current notions of black American identity are not inevitable, nor have they simply been forced onto the black community. Instead, he argues, black American intellectuals have actively chosen the identity schemes that seem to us so natural today. Turning first to the late and relatively obscure novels of Wright, Ellison, and Baldwin, Reid-Pharr suggests that each of these authors rejects the idea of the black as innocent. Instead they insisted upon the responsibility of all citizens—even the most oppressed—within modern society. Reid-Pharr then examines a number of responses to this presumed erosion of black innocence, paying particular attention to articulations of black masculinity by Huey Newton, one of the two founders of the Black Panther Party, and Melvin Van Peebles, director of the classic film Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song. Shuttling between queer theory, intellectual history, literary close readings, and autobiography, Once You Go Black is an impassioned, eloquent, and elegant call to bring the language of choice into the study of black American literature and culture. At the same time, it represents a hard-headed rejection of the presumed inevitability of what Reid-Pharr names racial desire in the production of either culture or cultural studies.

Book excerpt: Clare James never intended to do more than visit museums and sketch the work of centuries of artists who had come before her when she signed up for a study abroad program in London, England. However, after her travel companion's belongings are nearly blown up under suspicious circumstances, she arrives at her flat where her new roommate bullies her at knifepoint. Exhausted and scared, she is quickly disillusioned about her reasons for coming overseas. And then Lizbeth, a friend from the United States whose mother is British, shows up with a mysterious tale of a stolen family heirloom--a painting so small it could be hidden in the sole of a shoe. This painting could prove the existence of a lost royal heir and close the doors of one of London's largest churches forever. Intrigued like a modern Nancy Drew, she goes from decoding messages by candlelight in the dome of St. Paul's cathedral to avoiding capture by doodling caricatures of guests amidst the glitz of a grand country ball. In her quest to find the truth, can Clare stay connected to the unique voice God has given her to share her testimony with the other students in the program and solve the meaning of the miniature painting's existence without compromising her beliefs? Book excerpt: This volume demonstrates how readers can become more effective parents, teachers, students, coaches, managers, or work supervisors, while also gaining practical skills to enhance their self-motivation, communication skills, and intervention acumen. The first eight chapters explain evidence-based principles from applied behavioral science (ABS) that can be used to improve the human dynamics of any situation involving behavior. Fundamentals from humanism are integrated strategically to show how an ABS intervention can be more acceptable, influential, and sustainable. The following twelve chapters detail the deployment of ABS interventions to optimize performance in a wide variety of fields, including occupational and transportation safety, quantity and quality of organizational work behavior, healthcare, athletic coaching, parenting, pre-school and college education, environmental sustainability, and the control of obesity and alcohol abuse. Applied Psychology provides a thorough review of the latest research in relation to these domains and explores issues for future investigation.
