Book Critical Flicker Fusion

Download or read book Critical Flicker Fusion written by William Fried and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-26 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The premise of this book is that films, like other works of the imagination, may be elucidated by applying methods derived from psychoanalysis, and that doing so will result in a deeper and richer appreciation of the film's meaning. The book explores a number of feature films that lend themselves particularly well to this process. Both in his introduction and throughout the text, the author comments on the method and discusses continuities, similarities and differences among the films. The book is structured according to the central themes of the films, including time and death, love and lust, secrets, and human identity. Some of the films are relevant to more than one of these thematic elements. The introductory essay explores the themes, their representation in the films, and the ways in which they may be elucidated by a psychoanalytically informed critique. Brief paragraphs between the sections of the book facilitate the transitions. In an appendix, there are three essays titled 'Mise-en-scene,' 'Whatever Flames Upon the Night,' and 'Mad Doctors.'

Book New Methods of Sensory Visual Testing

Download or read book New Methods of Sensory Visual Testing written by Michael Wall and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurement of visual acuity has been the cornerstone of visual testing since Snellen began quantitating visual acuity using letter optotypes in the 1860s. Bjerrum in the 1880s brought sophistication and quantitation to the assessment of the visual field with tangent screen examination using differently sized and colored targets. Further advances in visual testing did not occur until the Goldmann perimeter and the Farnsworth Munsell 100 Hue test were introduced in the 1940s, permitting further refinement in the detection and quantitation of acquired visual loss. An explosion of interest in sensory visual function testing followed the demonstration by Quigley and his colleagues in 1982 that despite the loss of more than 40% of the axons in the optic nerve, Snellen acuity and kinetic perimetry remained normal. Much of this interest has focused on a search for more sensitive and disease-specific sensory visual tests. Previously, novel tests used to probe visual function remained in the province of the visual physiologist and psychophysicist. These tests are now being introduced by the ophthalmologist into clinical practice. Concomitantly, the mass production of microcomputers and other technical advances have made tests such as automated perimetry and visual evoked response testing affordable for most offices. The clinician is presently being inundated with a plethora of visual function tests that may require a knowledge of visual psychophysics and statistics to understand and interpret. The purpose of this book is to acquaint the clinician with these new tests so that they may be used to maximum benefit.

Book excerpt: The poems contained in this volume are conversations we could easily overlook in our rush to provide care. Through poetry, I explore what it really means to be sick, and what it means to be a provider, or a caregiver. These poems are for people who have ever been unwell, and for those who have never been sick; for people who love poetry, and for those who wonder and doubt; for people who think the healthcare system is fatally flawed, and for those who serve in the system with dedication and love. The book is for learners of the healthcare professions, just as much as it is for teachers and practitioners. These poems are for you...

Book Vision

    Book Details:
  • Author : Pierre A. Buser
  • Publisher : MIT Press
  • Release : 1992
  • ISBN : 9780262023368
  • Pages : 572 pages

Download or read book Vision written by Pierre A. Buser and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this textbook on the physiology of vision, Buser and Imbert synthesize the data in the field, proceeding from the biophysics of retinal receptors to processing in the visual areas of the cortex. Although the focus is on mammalian studies, some data from comparative physiology are included. In just five chapters the authors cover the structure and organization of the retina, the physical characteristics of visual stimuli, the psychophysical laws of visual sensation (absolute thresholds, retinal adaptation, visual acuity, temporal resolution, movement perception, color vision, and stereopsis), the genesis and elaboration of signals in the retina, and mechanisms in the central visual pathways. Like Buser and Imbert's companion sensory neurophysiology text Audition, Vision has been translated and updated from the original French in a style that is straightforward and concise. It includes 248 carefully chosen and fully captioned illustrations that will make it accessible to upper-level undergraduate and graduate students in the basic and clinical neurosciences, to students in courses on perception and psychophysics in psychology departments, as well as to researchers in computer vision who are interested in biological vision..

Book Fitting The Task To The Human Fifth Edition

Download or read book Fitting The Task To The Human Fifth Edition written by E. Grandjean and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1997-07-31 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our working conditions have undergone rapid and fundamental changes during the last few years. One example is the widespread use of the individual computer in the shop, office and home. Another major development is that women now hold many jobs that used to be in the male domain, and that many more women choose a life-long occupational career. Workforces, tasks, conditions and tools are changing. Many office and industrial workers are tied to human-machine systems. Repetitive work can create cumulative health problems such as the often reported visual strains, mental stress and physical injury. Proper ergonomic measures can avoid such harmful effects and instead promote health conditions which are both efficient and agreeable. In this latest edition of Fitting the Task to the Human, Professor Karl Kroemer has revised and updated the text and data while remaining true to the spirit of Professor Etienne Grandjean's earlier editions. This aim is, as before, to impart basic knowledge of occupational ergonomics in a straightforward and lucid fashion to those responsible for the design, management and safety of people in the workplace, and to those who study it.

Book Visual Psychophysics

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dorothea Jameson
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 3642886582
  • Pages : 822 pages

Download or read book Visual Psychophysics written by Dorothea Jameson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 822 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume on Visual Psychophysics documents the current status of research aimed toward understanding the intricacies of the visual mechanism and its laws of operation in intact human perceivers. As can be seen from the list of contributors, the problems of vision engage the interest and experimental ingenuity of investi gators from a variety of disciplines. Thus we find authors affiliated with depart ments of biology, medical and physiological physics, ophthalmology, physics, physiology and anatomy, psychology, laboratories of neurophysiology, medical clinics, schools of optometry, visual and othcr types of research institutes. A continuing interplay between psychophysical studies and physiological work is everywhere evident. As more information about the physiological basis of vision accumulates, and new studies and analyses of receptor photochemistry and the neurophysiology of retina and brain appear, psychophysical studies of the intact organism become more sharply focused, sometimes more complex, and often more specialized. Technological advances have increased the variety and precision of the stimulus controls, and advances in measurement techniques have reopened old problems and stimulated the investigation of new ones. In some cases, new concepts are being drawn in to help further our under standing of the laws by which the visual mechanism operates; in other cases, ideas enunciated long ago have been reevaluated, developed more fully, and reified in terms of converging evidence from both psychophysical experiments and unit recordings from visual cells.
