Book excerpt: An intense debate has played out in recent years regarding how to implement a so-called "flexicurity system"-a labor market reform that combines flexibility, particularly in the hiring and firing process of firms, with security in the employment and income of the workforce. In Flexicurity Capitalism, Flaschel and Greiner lay out the macroeconomic structure of this system, providing the detailed mathematical models necessary to ponder seriously how such a system can work.

Book Deconstructing Flexicurity and Developing Alternative Approaches

Download or read book Deconstructing Flexicurity and Developing Alternative Approaches written by Maarten Keune and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-03-26 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, the concept of flexicurity has come to occupy a central place in political and academic debates regarding employment and social policy. It fosters a view in which the need for continuously increasing flexibility is the basic assumption, and the understanding of security increasingly moves from social protection to self-insurance or individual adaptability. Moreover, it rejects the traditional contradictions between flexibility and security, blending the two into a single notion and thus depoliticizing the relationships between capital and labour. This volume provides a critical discussion of the flexicurity concept, the theories upon which it is built and the ideas that it transmits about work, unemployment and social justice. It shows that flexicurity fosters the further individualization of social protection, an increase in precariousness and the further weakening of labour in relation to capital. The authors present a series of alternative theoretical, normative and policy approaches that provide due attention to the collective and political dimension of vulnerability and allow for the development of new societal projects based on alternative values and assumptions.

Book Roads to Social Capitalism

Download or read book Roads to Social Capitalism written by Peter Flaschel and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The current crises in the financialization of capitalism, and their repercussions on the financial viability of entire countries, severely question the achievements of mainstream economics and its disregard of Keynes's theory of effective demand and finance. In view of this, Peter Flaschel and Sigrid Luchtenberg consider roads to a type of capitalism that could eventually be considered as 'social' in nature. The authors underpin their study with theory, empirical evidence, and policy from a positive as well as a normative perspective. As points of departure for their concept of social capitalism, the theoretical framework provides a synthesis of the work of Marx, Keynes, and Schumpeter on ruthless capitalism, regulated capitalism, and competitive socialism.

Book The Macrodynamics of Capitalism

Download or read book The Macrodynamics of Capitalism written by Peter Flaschel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-11 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to advanced macrodynamics, viewed as a di- quilibriumtheoryof?uctuatinggrowth. Itbuildsonanearlierattempttoreformulate 1 the foundations of macroeconomics from the perspective of real markets diseq- librium and the con?ict over income distribution between capital and labor. It does so, not because it wants to support the view that this class con?ict is inevitable, but with the perspective that an understanding of this con?ict may help to formulate socio-economic principles and policies that can help to overcome class con?ict at least in its cruder forms or that can even lead to rationally understandable proce- 2 dures and rules that turn this con?ict into a consensus-driven interaction between 3 capitalists or their representatives and the employable workforce. The book starts from established theories of temporary equilibrium positions, the forces of real growth, and the con?ict over income distribution, represented by basic modeling approaches, which it considers in detail in its Part I in order to prepare the ground for their integration in Part II of the book. In this way we inspect what types of models of disequilibrium, income distribution, and real growth we have at our disposal, as models that have proved to be of real interest and sound from a rigorous modeling perspective.

Book Mathematical Economics and the Dynamics of Capitalism

Download or read book Mathematical Economics and the Dynamics of Capitalism written by Peter Flaschel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-01 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Richard Goodwin was a pioneer in the use of mathematical tools to understand the dynamics of capitalist economies. This book contains contributions which focus on the rigorous extension of Goodwin’s modelling of macro-dynamics and the micro-structures underlying them, and also research with a wider perspective related to Goodwin’s vision of an integrated Marx-Keynes-Schumpeter (M-K-S) system of the dynamics of capitalist economies. The variety of approaches in this book range from detailed business cycle analyses to Schumpeterian processes of creative destruction. They include thorough theoretical analysis of delayed dynamical systems. empirical studies of Goodwin’s classical growth cycle model and the integration of Keynesian aspects of effective demand and of financial mechanisms that impact the real macro-economy. micro-economic structural analysis. expectations driven aspects of micro-founded business cycle modelling

Book Making Capitalism Fit For Society

Download or read book Making Capitalism Fit For Society written by Colin Crouch and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-08-21 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Capitalism is the only complex system known to us that can provide an efficient and innovative economy, but the financial crisis has brought out the pernicious side of capitalism and shown that it remains dependent on the state to rescue it from its own deficiencies. Can capitalism be reshaped so that it is fit for society, or must we acquiesce to the neoliberal view that society will be at its best when markets are given free rein in all areas of life? The aim of this book is to show that the acceptance of capitalism and the market does not require us to accept the full neoliberal agenda of unrestrained markets, insecurity in our working lives, and neglect of the environment and of public services. In particular, it should not mean supporting the growing dominance of public life by corporate wealth. The world’s most successful mature economies are those that fully embrace both the discipline of the market and the need for protection against its negative outcomes. Indeed, a continuing, unresolved clash between these two forces is itself a major source of vitality and innovation for economy and society. But maintenance of that tension depends on the enduring strength of trade unions and other critical groups in civil society - a strength that is threatened by neoliberalism’s increasingly intolerant onward march. Outlining the principles for a renewed and more assertive social democracy, this timely and important book shows that real possibilities exist to create a better world than that which is being offered by the wealthy elites who dominate our public and private lives.

Book Flexicurity and Beyond

Download or read book Flexicurity and Beyond written by Henning Jørgensen and published by Djoef Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flexicurity has become the focal point of the Lisbon-process and the European social model. How can synergies develop between a flexible labor market and more security for the citizens? In this context, economic dynamism and social safety are often portrayed as incompatible. The articles in this volume take the opposite position and argue that they can be each other's pre-condition. The contributors are leading European experts in the rapidly growing field of flexicurity research. Their contributions are essential reading for both practitioners and scientists engaged in shaping the economic and political future of Europe.

Book excerpt: Social partners have different visions about flexicurity both conceptual point of view and of some the eventual mechanisms of implementing this concept. They have in mind the implementation of flexicurity only in their interest area, some of them are emphasasing flexibility while other social security, so there isn't a global agreement. A sound balance between flexibility and security is an indispensable means of improving competitiveness while maintaining the European social model. The combination of flexibility and security is unique to each country and in the context of the present crises calls for a strengthening security for workers. The present paper adds some new elements to the existing research on flexicurity by exploring the relevance and adaptability of this strategy to the Romanian labor market. The present paper also emphasizes that social dialogue is a key component for elaborate a Romanian flexicurity model, adaptable to the labor market dynamics, non-birocratic, that can generate new and better work places and open the way to a sustainable straightening. As a result the paper includes conceptual clarifications regarding flexicurity, an analysis of the Romanian labor market flexicurity, the role of the flexicurity in reducing the effects of the economic crisis and the principal conclusions from the social partners' point of views which were presented in the public audition organized on this topic.

Book The Economy as Cultural System

Download or read book The Economy as Cultural System written by Todd Dufresne and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2012-11-22 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2008 global crisis, unemployment, lack of retirement funds, bank bailouts... today, the "economy" is on everyone's mind. But what makes this rather opaque concept work? This collection of essays seeks out the answer by exploring contemporary capitalism from a variety of theoretical perspectives and by confronting the economy as a cultural system, a theory, and a driving force of every day life in the West. The first part of the book discusses past and present representation of capitalism (from Hegel and Marx to Negri and Florida) along with their continuing impact. The second part focuses on capitalism as a locus of power and resistance, and maps possible responses to the current situation. The roles of metaphor and discourse is examined throughout to rethink the implications of power in the context of globalization and consumer culture. Each chapter features an abstract, study questions, as well as further reading suggestions, which, along with its accessible theoretical coverage, will make the book an essential study tool for students in social and political thought, globalization, and social theory.

Book Flexicurity Between Europeanization and Varieties of Capitalism A Comparative Analysis of Employment Protection Reforms in Portugal and Greece

Download or read book Flexicurity Between Europeanization and Varieties of Capitalism A Comparative Analysis of Employment Protection Reforms in Portugal and Greece written by Sotirios Zartaloudis and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The article examines the adoption of Flexicurity principles in Portugal and Greece during 2006-2009. Despite the similar conditions between the two cases and common EU stimulus, the process and final outcomes in the reform of their employment protection systems differed. In Portugal, the government persevered and implemented a reform in line with Flexicurity principles. By contrast, the Greek government initially favoured Flexicurity and initiated a reform process of the legal framework; however the reform was halted. The article explains this divergence by combining the insights of Europeanization and Varieties of Capitalism literatures. It is argued that in cases of Mixed Market Economies, 'misfit' with EU stimuli is a necessary, but not sufficient condition for institutional change. Instead, reforms depend on union structure and the existence of policy entrepreneurs favouring reform, which explains the divergent reform paths.

Book Unbalanced Growth from a Balanced Perspective

Download or read book Unbalanced Growth from a Balanced Perspective written by Carl Chiarella and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2021-01-29 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a whole this book adds the ‘Keynes’-component (K) to the Goodwinian vision of a ‘MKS-System’. It first provides a reconsideration of prominent past approaches towards the formation of Keynesian macrodynamics. Ultimately it aims to integrate Marx's Distributive Cycle and aspects of Schumpeter's reformulation of socialism and democracy theory, with Keynes' macro-theory of a ‘Tripartite Market Hierarchy’. This regards financial markets as being at the top, followed by goods markets which in turn are followed by the weakest element, the labor markets. It is completed by certain repercussions that influence the central causal nexus of these three fundamental macro-markets in the longer-run.

Book Economic Growth and the Employer of Last Resort

Download or read book Economic Growth and the Employer of Last Resort written by Peter Flaschel and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a model of economic growth with unemployment due to labor market rigidities. The economy consists of a firm that maximizes profits, of a government and of two types of households that maximize inter-temporal utility. One household supplies skilled labor at the first labor market, the other household supplies simple labor at the second labor market. The government in the economy raises taxes and uses its revenues to employ labor receiving unemployment benefits, to finance transfers to the household in the second labor market and to finance public spending. We analyze both the version with exogenous growth as well as an endogenous growth variant, where growth is made endogenous by assuming positive externalities of capital. The exogenous growth model is characterized by global determinacy while it is locally indeterminate. The endogenous growth model can be globally indeterminate with the high balanced growth path being locally indeterminate and the low balanced growth path being locally determinate. We also study how taxation and how the speed of the wage adjustment affect the economy.
