Book Simple Performance Tester for Superpave Mix Design

Download or read book Simple Performance Tester for Superpave Mix Design written by Ramon Francis Bonaquist and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2003 with total page 169 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global response to COVID-19 has demonstrated the importance of vigilance and preparedness for infectious diseases, particularly influenza. There is a need for more effective influenza vaccines and modern manufacturing technologies that are adaptable and scalable to meet demand during a pandemic. The rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines has demonstrated what is possible with extensive data sharing, researchers who have the necessary resources and novel technologies to conduct and apply their research, rolling review by regulators, and public-private partnerships. As demonstrated throughout the response to COVID-19, the process of research and development of novel vaccines can be significantly optimized when stakeholders are provided with the resources and technologies needed to support their response. Vaccine Research and Development to Advance Pandemic and Seasonal Influenza Preparedness and Response focuses on how to leverage the knowledge gained from the COVID-19 pandemic to optimize vaccine research and development (R&D) to support the prevention and control of seasonal and pandemic influenza. The committee's findings address four dimensions of vaccine R&D: (1) basic and translational science, (2) clinical science, (3) manufacturing science, and (4) regulatory science.

Book Characterizing Cement Stabilized Base Material Containing Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement

Download or read book Characterizing Cement Stabilized Base Material Containing Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement written by Stephanus Johannes Hofmeyr Louw and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asphalt concrete pavements receive maintenance to retard the loss of structural integrity and functionality. A common maintenance action to address localized failures is hot mix asphalt or cold mix patches. The result of this practice is a pavement cross-section with different binder ages. The main focus of this study is to investigate the effects of different binder ages in reclaimed material included in cement stabilized bases resulting from full depth reclamation of asphalt concrete roads. The research hypothesis for this thesis is that the new asphalt binder from hot mix patches in an aged flexible pavement has no significant effect on the stiffness properties of a cement stabilized base which has been placed using full depth reclamation. Three types of material were used in this study. The first was virgin aggregate base (AB), the second was Full Depth Reclaimed Material (FDRM) which consisted of 50% rubberized reclaimed asphalt pavement and 50% virgin aggregate base, and lastly 90% Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement (RAP) with 10% virgin aggregate base. A portion of the full depth reclaimed material and a portion of the RAP were oven aged to simulate aging in the field. The material was then stabilized with 5% cement. The tests that were conducted included maximum dry density, optimum moisture content, unconfined compressive strength, indirect tensile strength, dynamic modulus and shrinkage. The main conclusions of this study were that unaged asphaltic material in full depth reclaimed bases stabilized with cement will have a lower dynamic modulus compared to cement stabilized material made from the surrounding, aged asphaltic material. The strength properties between the aged and unaged RAP and FDRM were not significantly different. This suggests that compressive and tensile strength depends primarily on the cementitious bonds, and that the age of the asphalt binder covering the aggregates does not influence the strength. Even though this will not influence the mix design of the cement stabilized base constructed with full depth reclamation, the base will have reduced stiffnesses in localized areas which are potential fatigue failure zones for the AC surface.

Book The Use of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement in New SUPERPAVE Asphalt Concrete Mixtures

Download or read book The Use of Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement in New SUPERPAVE Asphalt Concrete Mixtures written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the research and development of the SUPERPAVE asphalt mixture design and analysis system did address the use of polymer modified asphalt binders in the specification of material performance properties, no recommendations or procedural guidelines were given for the use of recycled materials. The use of recycled asphalt pavements (RAP) in new paving mixtures is not an innovative idea. RAP has been called one of the most recycled materials in the world, and its use in paving mixtures has been shown to have environmental, economic and performance benefits. In this study, four different RAP stockpiles were sampled and the characteristics of each RAP material were investigated in terms of binder content, aggregate gradation and the rheologic characteristics of the reclaimed RAP binder. The reclaimed RAP binders were blended with several different virgin performance graded binders in order to determine how RAP binder concentration affected the stiffness and performance grade of the RAP -- virgin binder blends. Recommendations were made on how to select virgin binder grade andor RAP concentration combinations to fulfill a project's binder grading requirements. The effects of RAP were also investigated in terms mixture design, and recommendations were made with regards to material handling and specimen fabrication procedures. Asphalt concrete mixtures containing RAP were characterized in terms of stiffness and resistance to plastic strain using SUPERPAVE testing methods, and the results of these tests were compared to those of virgin material mixtures. Assuming a simulated pavement cross section and traffic loading, the results of this performance testing were used in performance prediction models to estimate how pavements constructed with RAP would perform compared to those made from 100% virgin materials. The predicted performance of pavements containing up to 40% RAP (by weight) was found to be similar or slightly better than that of virgin material pavements.

Book Recycling Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement

Download or read book Recycling Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement written by James H. Tanski and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After completing a study of milling and planning flexible pavement, the next logical step was to find a use for the surplus reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). Recycling RAP is a concept that has garnered significant interest periodically since about 1915, whenever petroleum shortages threatened. In the mid-1970s it again became timely. From 1976 through 1983, three recycling experiments were performed on rural state highways. They were 1) a 100-percent recycled, synthetically rejuvenated top course, 2) a top course recycled untreated as a shoulder base course, and 3) an asphalt-cement rejuvenated top-course material recycled as a 35/65 base course (35-percent recycled, 65-percent virgin material), a 35/65 top course, and a 50/50 top course. In the first two experiments on-site top courses were milled, stockpiled (short-term) and later recycled, and the third material from existing stockpiles was recycled after long-term shortage.
