Such partitions often occur in mobile computing environments. Coda provides a framework for invoking customized pieces of code called application- specific resolvers (ASRs) that encapsulate the knowledge needed for file resolution. If resolution succeeds, the user notices nothing more than a slight performance delay. Only if resolution fails does the user have to resort to manual repair. Our design combines a rule-based approach to ASR selection with transactional encapsulation of ASR execution. This paper shows how such an approach leads to flexible and efficient file resolution without loss of security or robustness."

CoopIS is a multi-disciplinary conference, which deals with all aspects of cooperation. The relevant disciplines are: collaborative work, distributed databases, distributed computing, electronic commerce, human-computer interaction, multi-agent systems, information retrieval, and workflow systems. The CoopIS series provides a forum for well-known researchers who are drawn by the stature and the tradition of these conference series and has a leading role in shaping the future of the cooperative information systems area. CoopIS 2000 is the seventh conference in the series and the fifth conference organized by the International Foundation on Cooperative Information Systems (IFCIS). It is sponsored by the IFCIS, the IBM Research Laboratory in Haifa and Compaq, Tandem labs Israel. It replaces the former international workshops on Interoperability in Multidatabase systems (IMS) and the conference series on Cooperative Information Systems (CoopIS & ICICIS). In response to the call for papers 74 papers were submitted. Each of them was reviewed by at least three reviewers, and at the end of this process 24 papers were accepted for presentation at the conference. Six additional papers were selected for short presentations. In addition the conference includes two panels, two keynote speakers (Professor Calton Pu from Georgia Tech and Professor Sheizaf Rafaeli from Haifa University) and one tutorial. In many cases, a mobile device has access only to data that is stored locally, and much of that data arrives via replication from other devices, PCs, and services. Given portable devices with limited resources, weak or intermittent connectivity, and security vulnerabilities, data replication serves to increase availability, reduce communication costs, foster sharing, and enhance survivability of critical information. Mobile systems have employed a variety of distributed architectures from client–server caching to peer-to-peer replication. Such systems generally provide weak consistency models in which read and update operations can be performed at any replica without coordination with other devices. The design of a replication protocol then centers on issues of how to record, propagate, order, and filter updates. Some protocols utilize operation logs, whereas others replicate state. Systems might provide best-effort delivery, using gossip protocols or multicast, or guarantee eventual consistency for arbitrary communication patterns, using recently developed pairwise, knowledge-driven protocols. Additionally, systems must detect and resolve the conflicts that arise from concurrent updates using techniques ranging from version vectors to read–write dependency checks. This lecture explores the choices faced in designing a replication protocol, with particular emphasis on meeting the needs of mobile applications. It presents the inherent trade-offs and implicit assumptions in alternative designs. The discussion is grounded by including case studies of research and commercial systems including Coda, Ficus, Bayou, Sybase’s iAnywhere, and Microsoft’s Sync Framework. We have reached a point where the promise of information access anywhere and anytime is close to realization. The enabling technology, wireless networks, exists; what remains to be achieved is providing the infrastructure and the software to support the promise. Universal access and management of information has been one of the driving forces in the evolution of computer technology. Central computing gave the ability to perform large and complex computations and advanced information manipulation. Advances in networking connected computers together and led to distributed computing. Web technology and the Internet went even further to provide hyper-linked information access and global computing. However, restricting access stations to physical location limits the boundary of the vision.

As for the 2002 edition in Irvine, the organizers wanted to stimulate this cross-pollination with a program of shared famous keynote speakers (this year we got Sycara, - ble, Soley and Mylopoulos!), and encouraged multiple attendance by providing authors with free access to another conference or workshop of their choice. We received an even larger number of submissions than last year for the three conferences (360 in total) and the workshops (170 in total). Not only can we therefore again claim a measurable success in attracting a representative volume of scienti?c papers, but such a harvest allowed the program committees of course to compose a high-quality cross-section of worldwide research in the areas covered. In spite of the increased number of submissions, the Program Chairs of the three main conferences decided to accept only approximately the same number of papers for presentation and publication as in 2002 (i. e. , around 1 paper out of every 4–5 submitted). For the workshops, the acceptance rate was about 1 in 2. Also for this reason, we decided to separate the proceedings into two volumes with their own titles, and we are grateful to Springer-Verlag for their collaboration in producing these two books. The reviewing process by the respective program committees was very professional and each paper in the main conferences was reviewed by at least three referees.
