Book excerpt: Secondly, our aim was to build a picture of individual life courses in the context of the firm, the IT industry and the national labour markets in Canada and the United Kingdom. [...] Many of these workers had been in the IT industry through its growth in the 1990s, the downturn of the 2000s and the subsequent semi-recovery. [...] 4.2 Timing Matters There were a number of ways in which the timing of transitions mattered for their perceived success, with timing being defined in terms of the stage in the individual's own work career, the life course of the firm or the industry and other life-course transitions including marriage and childbearing, as well as age. [...] The expansion and contraction of these firms seemed to be particularly rapid in the IT industry, perhaps because of the rapid pace of technology change and the culture of the "start up" company, but this might be the case for small and medium- sized firms in general. [...] The sector skills council for IT and telecoms in the United Kingdom, e-skills and its Canadian counterpart, the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC), have developed a range of resources and tools that are designed to address issues of job- preparedness and training given the speed of change in the sector.

Book Capability as a Yardstick for Flexicurity

Download or read book Capability as a Yardstick for Flexicurity written by Lehweß-Litzmann, René and published by Universitätsverlag Göttingen. This book was released on 2014-07-30 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flexicurity is a European policy agenda seeking to increase both flexibility and security in the labour-market. This book argues that it needs a revision: Although flexicurity is set out to change the way Europeans work and live, and even though it is being justified by workers’ needs, flexicurity lacks of a clear and democratically justified vision of society. Flexicurity is confronted here with Amartya Sen’s capability-approach, a paradigm of well-being evaluation. How is flexicurity related to a concept of employment as part of a way of life which people have reason to value? How capability-friendly are established flexicurity-indicators? It is thus shown how the capability-approach can be used in the field of labour-market and social policy.

Book Aging and Working in the New Economy

Download or read book Aging and Working in the New Economy written by Julie Ann McMullin and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 255 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The case studies and analyses developed in this timely book provide insight into the structural features of small- and medium-sized firms in the information technology sector, and the implications of these features for the careers of people who are employed by them. Using research conducted in Australia, Canada, England and the United States, the contributors explore how individuals manage their paid work within firms that are struggling to survive and compete in global economies. The book discusses the tensions that arise as workers and owners struggle for personal and firm survival, two processes that are often contradictory and occasionally produce conflict. The firms in this study show how the character of the small, New Economy is changing the relationship between employers and employees in increasingly significant ways. A broadly international audience of scholars, students, human resource professionals and policymakers in business, public policy, economics and sociology will find this book of great interest.

  • Release : 2008
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 26 pages

Download or read book In Search of a Balance written by Martijn van Velzen and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents and discusses various modalities of labour market flexibility and security. The focus is on employment protection legislation, part-time work and temporary agency work, drawing evidence and examples from the Netherlands, Denmark, Spain and the United States. The main thrust of the paper is that numerical flexibility and security are not incompatible but, rather, that flexibilisation requires security and vice versa. Another important conclusion is that a well-developed social dialogue, consultation and mutual trust between the social partners are important preconditions in striking a good balance between flexibility and security. The paper also contains some suggestions for possible directions for Turkish labour market reform and regulation.

Book The European Social Model and Transitional Labour Markets

Download or read book The European Social Model and Transitional Labour Markets written by Ralf Rogowski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-02-11 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together theoretical, empirical and comparative perspectives on the European Social Model (ESM) and transitional labour market policy, this volume contains theoretical accounts of the ESM and a discussion of policy implications for European social and employment policies that derive from research on transitional labour markets. It provides an economic as well as legal assessment of the European Employment Strategy and contains evaluations of new forms of governance both in European and member state policies, including discussions of the potential and limits of soft law instruments. Country studies of labour market reforms in Denmark, the Netherlands, Belgium and France assess their contribution to an emerging ESM, while comparative accounts of the ESM examine mobility and security patterns in Europe and beyond and evaluate recent 'flexicurity' policies from a global perspective.

Book Rising employment flexibility and young workers economic insecurity

Download or read book Rising employment flexibility and young workers economic insecurity written by Dipl.-Soz. Ellen Ebralidze and published by Verlag Barbara Budrich. This book was released on 2011-11-29 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How have the immediate school-to-work transition and the early career changed in different labour market entry regimes since the early 1980s? How do institutional frameworks differ with regard to insecurity perception? Ellen Ebralidze investigates these topics from a cross-national perspective while focusing on Denmark, the darling of flexicurity literature. The results show that in all the labour market entry regimes, the school-towork transition has become increasingly difficult, and flexible forms of work are more typical in the first job. Furthermore, the liberal institutional framework of the United States seems to produce a similarly low degree of job-loss worry among young people in their early career as the Danish paradigm.

Book Labour Market Flexibility and Pension Reforms

Download or read book Labour Market Flexibility and Pension Reforms written by K. Hinrichs and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-04-05 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Increasingly flexible labour markets and reforms of old-age pension systems are still ranking high on the political agenda of European countries. This volume investigates whether, and to what extent, the interplay between pension reforms and the spread of 'atypical' employment patterns and fragmented careers has a negative influence uponeconomic security in old age. The volume, therefore, analyzes the flexibility-security nexus by focusing on the post-retirement phase, thus extending the conventional narrow concept of 'flexicurity'. The book also questions whetherreforms of public and private pension schemes compensate or aggravate the risks of increasingly flexible labor markets and atypical employment careers after retirement? Around this overarching research question, the various contributions in the volume employ the same analytical framework in order to map, and then compare, the developments in seven European countries - Denmark, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland, and the UK which present different labour market arrangements and various degrees of flexibility, as well as diverse pension systems.

Book Reforming Asian Labor Systems

Download or read book Reforming Asian Labor Systems written by Frederic C. Deyo and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2012-03-06 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Reforming Asian Labor Systems, Frederic C. Deyo examines the implications of post-1980s market-oriented economic reform for labor systems in China, South Korea, the Philippines, and Thailand. Adopting a critical institutionalist perspective, he explores the impact of elite economic interests and strategies, labor politics, institutional path dependencies, and changing economic circumstances on regimes of labor and social regulation in these four countries. Of particular importance are reform-driven socioeconomic and political tensions that, especially following the regional financial crisis of the late 1990s, have encouraged increased efforts to integrate social and developmental agendas with those of market reform. Through his analysis of the social economy of East and Southeast Asia, Deyo suggests that several Asian countries may now be positioned to repeat what they achieved in earlier decades: a prominent role in defining new international models of development and market reform that adapt to the pressures and constraints of the evolving world economy.
