The analysis is based on a search for t{bar t} → l'[nu]l{bar l} + jets (l,{ell}' = e, [mu]) final states using 4.1 fb−1 of integrated luminosity of p{bar p} collisions at √ s = 1.96 TeV. We extract limits on the branching ratio B(t → Zq) (q = u, c quarks), assuming anomalous tuZ or tcZ couplings. We do not observe any sign of such anomalous coupling and set a limit of B

Book excerpt: This PhD thesis focuses on the search for flavor-changing neutral currents in the decay of a top quark to an up-type quark (q = u, c) and the Standard Model Higgs boson, where the Higgs boson decays to bb. Further, the thesis presents the combination of this search for top quark pair events with other ATLAS searches – in the course of which the most restrictive bounds to date on tqH interactions were obtained. Following on from the discovery of the Higgs boson, it is particularly important to measure the Yukawa couplings of the Standard Model fermions; these parameters may provide crucial insights to help solve the flavor puzzle and may help reveal the presence of new physics before it is directly observed in experiments.

Book excerpt: Presented here are the results of a direct search for flavor changing neutral currents via the rare process Z° → bs and a measurement of R{sub bs} = [Lambda](Z° → bs)/[Lambda](Z° → hadrons). Because the decays Z° → b{bar b} and Z° → c{bar c} contribute significant backgrounds to Z° → bs, simultaneous measurements of R{sub b} = [Lambda](Z° → b{bar b})/[Lambda](Z° → hadrons) and R{sub c} = [Lambda](Z° → c{bar c})/[Lambda](Z° → hadrons) were also made. The standard double tag technique was extended and self calibrating tags were used for s, c, and b quarks. These measurements were made possible by the unique capabilities of the SLAC Large Detector (SLD) at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC): The b and c tags relied upon the SLD's VXD3 307 megapixel CCD vertex detector for topological and kinematic reconstruction of the B and D decay vertices; the s tag identified K{sup {+-}} mesons using the particle identification capabilities of SLD's Cherenkov Ring Imaging Detector (CRID), and K{sub S}° mesons and [Lambda] hadrons by kinematic reconstruction of their decay vertices in SLD's 5120 channel central drift chamber (CDC) particle tracking system.

Book excerpt: This work presents a search for three rare/forbidden neutral charm decays, D[sup 0][yields][mu]e, D[sup 0][yields][mu][mu], and D[sup 0][yields] ee. This study was based on data collected in Experiment E789 at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory using 800 GeV/c proton-gold interactions. Two statistical analyses are presented, one with background subtraction and the other without background subtraction. No evidence is found for any of the decays and the following upper limits are presented at the 90% confidence level.

This measurement uses a p{bar p} collisions data sample corresponding to 6.8 fb−1 at √s = 1.96 TeV collected by the CDF II detector at the Tevatron collider. The total and differential branching ratios for?{sub b}° →??+?− are measured. They find?(?{sub b}° →??+?−) = [1.73 ± 0.42(stat) ± 0.55(syst)] x 10−6. They also report the first measurement of the differential branching ratio of B{sub s}° →??+?− using 49 signal events. In addition, they report branching ratios for B+ → K+?+?−, B° → K°?+?− and B → K*(892)?+?− decays.

Book excerpt: The authors present preliminary results from a search for the rare, flavor-changing neutral current decays B[yields] K[ell][sup+][ell][sup -] and B[yields] K*[ell][sup+][ell][sup -], where[ell][sup+][ell][sup -] is either an e[sup+]e[sup -] or[mu][sup+][mu][sup -] pair. The data sample comprises (84.4[+-] 0.9) x 10[sup 6][Upsilon](4S)[yields] B[bar B] decays (77.8 fb[sup -1]) collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II B Factory. For B[yields] K[ell][sup+][ell][sup -], they observe a signal with estimated significance of 4.4[sigma] and obtain[Beta](B[yields] K[ell][sup+][ell][sup -])= (0.78[sub -0.20-0.18][sup+0.24+0.11]) x 10[sup 06] (averaged over[ell]= e and[mu]). For B[yields] K*[ell][sup+][ell][sup -], they observe an excess of events over background with estimated significance of 2.8[sigma]. They obtain[Beta](B[yields] K*[ell][sup+][ell][sup -])= (1.68[sub -0.58][sup+0.68][+-] 0.28) x 10[sup -6] and the 90% C.L. upper limit[Beta](B[yields] K*[ell][sup+][ell][sup -])
