Book excerpt: Can Two Men Escape the Horror of the Civil War and the Prejudice of Reconstruction by Heading West? As in all wars, young men volunteer to fight. The Union recruited Jack Donaldson from the Catskill Mountains in New York to whip the Rebels into submission and return home before the next harvest. After he survives two years of war, watches his closest friends die in battle, and suffers a gunshot wound at Gettysburg, he's had enough. Jack decides to muster out and start a new life by heading west on the Santa Fe Trail. In Louisiana, a Confederate major convinced a Louisiana detachment of free-born black men, including Ty Jones, to help the South repel the northern invaders. Ty leaves the peaceful, sheltered plantation of his childhood and marches off to war, full of pride. Brutal wartime conditions and senseless discrimination are a rude awakening to the outside world and after humiliating defeat at Vicksburg, he returns home. With the advice of his father, he leaves war and the aftermath of the Southern defeat behind and heads west in search of a new opportunity. The two veterans from opposite sides of the war meet on the Santa Fe Trail, discover they have plenty in common, and form a partnership. Their goal: start a cattle ranch in the rough country of the west Texas plains and make it a place to call their own. Their dreams come with a price. Their pasts haunt them as they struggle to establish the Flat Top Mountain Ranch during the Westward Expansion and Indian Wars. James E. Doucette is a retired businessman and part-time rancher. He grew up in the Northeast and moved to Texas in 1983. In 1988, he and his wife, Denise, purchased the Flat Top Mountain Ranch. One thing they've learned about ranching is that when the fences are down, the cattle are scattered, and the Texas High Plains winter wind is blowing, there are only two people out chasing the cattle-the rancher and his wife.

Book SMS Ranch The

Download or read book SMS Ranch The written by Dawn Youngblood PhD and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2017 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Few images captivate the Western imagination more than the Texas cowboy at home on the range, herding, corralling, throwing and branding cattle, bronc busting, dining from chuck wagons, and sleeping under the stars. The SMS Ranch in the early 1900s was exactly such a place. Spanning hundreds of thousands of acres and holding land in 12 Northwest Texas counties, the SMS was formed by early Swedish immigrant to the Republic of Texas Swante Magnus Swenson. Swenson, a good friend of Sam Houston, had a penchant for wise financial decisions and, by the late 1800s, lived in New York with offices on Wall Street. Swenson sent his two sons to manage his vast Texas landholdings. In 1902, they hired legendary cattleman Frank Hastings to manage the SMS Ranch, headquartered in Stamford, Texas, north of Abilene and west of Fort Worth. Hastings's wife, Laura, and daughter Ruth photographed life on the ranch, and many professional photographers visited the SMS as well, leaving a rich visual legacy."--provided by publisher.

Download or read book The Cowboy written by Blake Allmendinger and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 218 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What are the connections between cattle branding and Christian salvation, between livestock castration and square dancing, between rustling and the making of spurs and horsehair bridles in prison, between children's coloring books and cowboy poetry as it is practiced today? The Cowboy usesliterary, historical, folkloric, and pop cultural sources to document ways in which cowboys address religion, gender, economics, and literature. Arguing that cowboys are defined by the work they do, Allmendinger sets out in each chapter to investigate one form of labor (such as branding, castration,or rustling) that cowboys perform in their "work culture." He then looks at early oral poems that cowboys recited around campfires, on trail drives, at roundups, and at home in their bunkhouses, and at later poems, histories and autobiographies written by cowboys--most of which have never beforebeen studied by scholars. He discovers that these texts not only deal with work but with larger concerns, including art, morality, spirituality, and male sexuality. In addition to spotlighting little-known texts, art, and archival sources, The Cowboy examines the works of Twain, Steinbeck, Cather,Norris, Dana, McMurtry, and others, and features more than 60 historic photographs, many of which have not been published until now.
