Book excerpt: Flash! presents a fascinating cultural history of flash photography, from its mid-nineteenth century beginnings to the present day. All photography requires light, but the light of flash photography is quite distinctive: artificial, sudden, shocking, intrusive, and extraordinarily bright. Associated with revelation and wonder, it has been linked to the sublimity of lightning. Yet it has also been reviled: it's inseparable from anxieties about intrusion and violence, it creates a visual disturbance, and its effects are often harsh and create exaggerated contrasts. Flash! explores flash's power to reveal shocking social conditions, its impact on the representation of race, its illumination of what would otherwise remain hidden in darkness, and its capacity to put on display the most mundane corners of everyday life. It looks at flash's distinct aesthetics, examines how paparazzi chase celebrities, how flash is intimately linked to crime, how flash has been used to light up - and interrupt - countless family gatherings, how flash can 'stop time' allowing one to photograph rapidly moving objects or freeze in a strobe, and it considers the biggest flash of all, the atomic bomb. Examining the work of professionals and amateurs, news hounds and art photographers, photographers of crime and of wildlife, the volume builds a picture of flash's place in popular culture, and its role in literature and film. Generously illustrated throughout, Flash! brings out the central role of this medium to the history of photography and challenges some commonly held ideas about the nature of photography itself.

This book was released on 2020-08-06 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1945, the United States dropped atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the immediate aftermath was documented by Japanese photographers. For the most part the images they produced were censored or confiscated, but many were preserved in secret. Some were published widely in Japan during the 1950s, though not in the United States. Later, prints and negatives were gathered by groups such as the Anti-Nuclear Photographers’ Movement of Japan, whose collection is now housed at the Briscoe Center for American History. The center’s Hiroshima and Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Photographs Archive consists of more than eight hundred photographs, over one hundred of which are seen here for the first time in an English-language publication. To mark the seventy-fifth anniversary of the bombings, Flash of Light, Wall of Fire features the work of twenty-three Japanese photographers who risked their lives to capture the devastation. Together these images serve as a visual record of nuclear destruction, the horrific effects of radiation exposure, and the mass suffering that ensued. A preface by Briscoe Center Executive Director Don Carleton, an essay by Michael B. Stoff, and an afterword by Japanese journalist Michiko Tanaka explore how the images were collected and preserved as well as how they helped provoke calls for peace and the abolishment of nuclear weapons.

Book Side Lights on American History

Download or read book Side Lights on American History written by Henry W. Elson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-28 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Side Lights on American History The cordial reception by the public of the first series of "Side Lights on American History," published a year ago, has been very gratifying to the author, and has far surpassed his expectations. The press notices also have been uniformly commendatory, many making special reference to the literary style. These facts have greatly encouraged the author in preparing the present volume, which, it is hoped, will be received with equal favor. This volume begins where its predecessor left off, and covers the period of the Civil War and that which follows on to the present time. The original plan of choosing out the chief events, without attempting to give a complete history, has been followed, the object being to turn a flash-light here and there on the part that may be taken as a fair sample of the whole.
