Book Flame Stabilization by a Plasma Driven Radical Jet in a High Speed Flow

Download or read book Flame Stabilization by a Plasma Driven Radical Jet in a High Speed Flow written by Woong-Sik Choi and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In current afterburners combustion is stabilized by the high temperature, recirculating region behind bluff body flame holders, such as V-gutters. Blocking the high speed flow with bluff bodies causes a significant pressure drop, and heating the flame holder by the hot combustion product causes a thermal signature, which is a critical problem in a military jet. To reduce these problems, ignition methods using a high frequency (HF) spark discharge, or a radical jet generator (RJG) were developed. The HF discharge ignited and stabilized a flame successfully in a premixed methane-air flow. The electrical power consumption was very small compared to the combustion heat release, as long as the operating velocity was relatively low. However, a theoretical study showed that the ratio of the electrical power consumption to the heat generation by the stabilized flame increases rapidly with increasing flow velocity. For flame stabilization in a high velocity flow, the developed RJG showed much better performance than direct exposure to a plasma. The present study investigated the characteristics of a radical jet produced in a RJG and injected into a main combustor. The limits of flame stabilization by this jet was measured experimentally, and compared to those of bluff body flame holders. The flame holding performance of the radical jet was also experimentally compared to that of a thermal jet. The effect of radicals on flame stabilization was examined using CHEMKIN, and the limit of flame stabilization by the radical jet was estimated for a simple flow configuration using an approximate solution. The results suggest that the reduction of local spontaneous ignition delay time by active species in the radical jet and the longer length of a typical radical jet compared to the dimension of the recirculation zone behind a bluff body increases the maximum velocity at which a flame can be stabilized.

Book Use of Derivations of Thermal Ignition Theory to Determine the General Flame Stabilization Condition with a Bluff Body

Download or read book Use of Derivations of Thermal Ignition Theory to Determine the General Flame Stabilization Condition with a Bluff Body written by V. A. Mironenko and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In solving the problem of flame stabilization, it is necessary to consider equally both the flow structure behind the bluff bodies and the kinetics of the chemical reaction. The article demonstrates, however, that, with certain assumptions and simplifications, the blow-out characteristics of a flame holder in the form of a bluff body can be satisfactorily explained and calculated, by using the thermal theory of ignition and the theory of turbulent flow. In deriving quantitative correlations, the following assumptions were made: (1) Up to the ignition point, the velocity, temperature, and concentration distributions of the turbulent boundary layer behind the holder are in accordance with the theory of turbulent flows for nonisothermal counter flows; they are not changed by the heat release resulting from the chemical reaction, for, according to the thermal theory of ignition, during the period of ignition delay, the heat release and temperature rise are insignificant. (2) The static pressure in the boundary layer behind the holder is equal to the free-stream static pressure. An expression was derived to determine the effect on the blow-out characteristics of the combustion chamber of the physical flow parameters (pressure, flow velocity, temperature) and type of fuel. If the dependence of the length of the reverse-flow zone on the dimension and shape of flame holder are known, the effect of its geometric parameters may also be determined. (Author).

Book Experimental Study of a Liquid Fuel Bluff Body Flame at Elevated Pressures

Download or read book Experimental Study of a Liquid Fuel Bluff Body Flame at Elevated Pressures written by Karam Paul and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this research was to operate a bluff body flame holder with the objective of stabilizing a flame at elevated pressures over a range of equivalence ratios. The ability to have a ground-based test rig capable of maintaining stable flames at high pressures and temperatures is critical in understanding flames present in modern jet engines and gas turbine technologies. The facility was reconfigured multiple times and the resultant flame was imaged within the optical test section. A converging nozzle was utilized to choke the flow and vary the operating pressures up to 5atm. By regulating mass flow rates of both the fuel and air, the target range of equivalence ratios was achieved. Jet fuel was successfully ignited on the bluff body and a flame was maintained in the recirculation zone. Visualization of flames during the flights of any aircraft is limited due to material and weight requirements, therefore, performing these studies in groundbased facilities is required. Further analysis was performed to characterize C2* and CH* radicals in fuel lean and rich flames.

Book The Mechanisms of Flame Holding in the Wake of a Bluff Body

Download or read book The Mechanisms of Flame Holding in the Wake of a Bluff Body written by Roger A. Strehlow and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flame holding mechanism for lean methane- and lean propane-air flames is examined under conditions where the recirculation zone is absent. The main objective of this work is to study the holding process in detail in an attempt to determine the mechanism of flame holding and also the conditions where this mechanism is viable and when it fails and blow-off occurs. Inverted flames held in the wake of a flat strip were studied. Experiments with different sizes of flame holders were performed. The velocity flow field was determined using a laser Doppler velocimetry technique. Equation of continuity was used to calculate the flame temperature from the change in area of flow streamlines before and after the flame. Observations of the inverted flame itself were obtained using schlieren and direct photography. Results show that there are different mechanisms operative at the time of blow-off for lean propane and methane flames. Blow-off or extinction occurs for lean propane-air flame in spite of the reaction going to completion and the disparity between the heat loss and the gain in mass diffusion in the reaction zone i.e., Le 1.0 causes the flame to blow-off. For methane-air flame the controlling factor or blow-off is incomplete reaction due to higher blowing rate leading to reduced residence time in the reaction zone.
