Book Flame Propagation Into the Gap of Solid Propellant Grain i by T Godai National Aerospace Laboratory Tokyo Japan Report No 91 Pp 1 12 1965

Download or read book Flame Propagation Into the Gap of Solid Propellant Grain i by T Godai National Aerospace Laboratory Tokyo Japan Report No 91 Pp 1 12 1965 written by REDSTONE SCIENTIFIC INFORMATION CENTER REDSTONE ARSENAL AL TRANSLATION BRANCH. and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The flame propagation into a narrow gap, which is prepared perpendicular to the prime burning surface of solid propellant grain, has been experimentally investigated using the test specimens of polyester-ammonium perchlorate composite propellants. Experimental results show that the flame propagates from the original burning surface into a gap when its width is larger than some critical value, and vice versa. This means that there always exists the critical value for the width of gap which is the threshold of propagation and nonpropagation of flame into it. The critical value is primarily the function of linear burning rate and the over-all mechanism of flame propagation into a gap of solid propellant grain will be explained with the quenching theorem. It is expected that further work will give a useful measure to the setting of standards of nondestructive testing of solid propellant grains and motors. (Author).

Book Ignition and Flame Propagation in Narrow Channels of Solid Propellant

Download or read book Ignition and Flame Propagation in Narrow Channels of Solid Propellant written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Future direct-fire gun systems will require solid propellant at high loading density, which can be achieved with propellant in slab-type geometry such as radial discs, concentric wraps, or scrolls. Adjacent propellant slabs will form porosity as narrow sheet-like channels (with entirely different permeability than bundled sticks or cylindrical grains). Successful functioning of the charge requires rapid ignition and unimpeded flame propagation throughout this system of channels. The present investigation is concerned with characterizing the fundamental ignition and transient combustion behavior of energetic materials when packed in such configurations. A special laboratory apparatus was designed to isolate two propellant channels and allow direct comparison of the influence of variable gap width, wall composition (inert or JA2 here), and channel end closure. Diagnostics include multiple pressure time histories along each channel length and high-speed cinematography of the propagation of flame. Results are presented for several channel configurations, showing influence of JA2 or plastic wall material, gap widths of 0-0.89 mm, and channel downstream ends either open or closed.

Book Transient Combustion in Solid Propellant Cracks

Book excerpt: A one-dimensional theoretical model, incorporating the Noble-Abel dense gas law, has been developed to describe the transient model combustion phenomena inside a propellant crack. The theoretical model can be used to predict wave phenomena, heat transfer from the gas to the propellant surface and associated thermal penetration, flame propagation, and resultant pressurization at various locations along the propellant cavity. Calculations made with the current theoretical model revealed that the internal pressurization rate, pressure gradient, and flame velocity in propellant cracks (for which gases can penetrate) decrease as: the gap width increases, the rocket chamber pressurization rate decreases, and the propellant gasification temperature increases. Additionally, the predicted flame spreading was found to decelerate in a region near the crack tip; this phenomena has been experimentally observed by others.

Book Analytical Prediction for Grain Burn Time and Burning Area Kinematics in a Solid Rocket Combustion Chamber

Download or read book Analytical Prediction for Grain Burn Time and Burning Area Kinematics in a Solid Rocket Combustion Chamber written by Oluleke Babayomi and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This chapter proposes the application of Newtonian particle mechanics for the derivation of predictive equations for burn time, burning and unburnt area propagation for the case of a core propellant grain. The grain is considered to be inhibited in a solid rocket combustion chamber subject to the assumption that the flame propagation speed is constant for the particular solid fuel formulation and formation chemistry in any direction. Here, intricacies surrounding reaction chemistry and kinetic mechanisms are not of interest at the moment. Meanwhile, the physics derives from the assumption of a regressive solid fuel pyrolysis in a cylindrical combustion chamber subject to any theoretical or empirical burn rate characterization law. Essential parametric variables are expressed in terms of the propellant geometrical configuration at any instantaneous time. Profiles from simulation studies revealed the effect of modulating variables on the burning propagation arising from the kinematics and ordinary differential equations models. In the meantime, this mathematical exercise explored the tendency for a tie between essential kernels and matching polynomial approximations. In the limiting cases, closed form expressions are couched in terms of the propellant grain geometrical parameters. Notably, for the fuel burn time, a good agreement is observed for the theoretical and experimental results.

Book Combustion in Solid Propellant Grain Defects A Study of Burning in Single and Multi Pore Charges

Download or read book Combustion in Solid Propellant Grain Defects A Study of Burning in Single and Multi Pore Charges written by and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The trend toward very high solids loading in high energy propellants leads to complexities in processing and to greater potential for ballistic anomalies. Present day high energy propellants are often more frangible than their predecessors and physical properties are now found, in many cases, to exert an inordinate effect on combustion. New failure modes are believed to be able to contribute to deflagration-to-detonation transition (DDT). For example, crumbling of a burning grain due to impact or shear represents vastly increased surface area which, if ignited, could lead to detonation. Combustion of porous or frangible charges is therefore of interest to the propulsion community. This study reduces the problem of convective combustion in porous charges and other grain defects to its ultimate simplicity (viz., the single pore), and then proceeds to reconstruct the more complicated geometrical and combustion situations leading to the porous bed or highly cracked (i.e., spiderweb) propellant. Flashdown (one of the more dramatic types of convective combustion), may be defined as runaway combustion rates (and pressure) associated with flame propagation into grain defects such as ducts, fissures, annuli, pores, etc. This type of anomalous combustion leads to flame spreading rates many orders of magnitude greater than normal. Pressures and pressurization rates exceeding design limits are common where such phenomena occur.
