Homeless and sleepless, they wander around Bergen in the rain, trying to make a life for themselves and the child they expect. Through a rich web of historical, cultural, and theological allusions, Fosse constructs a modern parable of injustice, resistance, crime, and redemption. Consisting of three novellas (Wakefulness, Olav’s Dreams, and Weariness), Trilogy is a haunting, mysterious, and poignant evocation of love, for which Fosse received The Nordic Council’s Prize for Literature in 2015.

  • Author : Helen Slavin
  • Publisher : Ipso Books

  • Pages : 265 pages

Download or read book The Extra Large Medium written by Helen Slavin and published by Ipso Books. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Complete with chatty prose, the requisite tea shop, and spooky clues, Slavin’s delightful novel takes the reader happily all the way to the ever after” (Booklist). Annie Colville can see—and converse with—dead people. She’s had this gift since she was a child, though “gift” may be overstating it since most of what they have to tell her is quite petty and tedious. But when her husband disappears suddenly, he does not come to visit her. So does that mean Evan is still alive? During her long wait to discover what happened to Evan, Annie searches through her mother’s vast collection of lovers for the other missing man in her life—her father—and struggles with the questions her gift asks of her. Who is the mysterious girl who sits by the lake? What happened to the lost woman whose sister has never stopped searching for her? And why are so many of the dead voices called Jim? Quirky, irreverent, moving, and a little bit spooky, this novel by “a highly original talent” will charm you completely—even as it’s raising the hairs on the back of your neck (Beryl Bainbridge, author of An Awfully Big Adventure). “Lightheartedly macabre . . . Slavin has something more subversive up her sleeve than mere entertainment: in conjuring a world of ghosts as likely to bore as to scare her heroine to death, she wickedly skewers a society whose obsession with the afterlife shortchanges life itself.” —The New York Times “Annie endears herself to the reader . . . She embodies a genuine purity of heart.” —Publishers Weekly

Book Regional Stratigraphy of North America

Download or read book Regional Stratigraphy of North America written by W.J. Frazier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 735 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An early reviewer of this book stated that he had difficulty assessing its marketability because it "falls between the cracks" of geological literature. We have designed this book to meet a need of modem geology: namely, a single source providing both detailed and synoptic stratigraphy of the various regions of North America, through geological time. Shortly after beginning work on such a book, we realized why it had not yet been written: it required six years of effort, assimilation of an incredible amount of information, and two years' additional work to cut the volume down to publishable size. Further, by the time the final chapter was written, the fIrst few were already out of date. Nevertheless, the book lies in front of you. It is intended to serve several purposes. As a textbook, it will serve the following courses: • Regional stratigraphy • Sedimentary tectonics • Regional tectonics • Advanced historical geology • Survey-level paleontology Obviously, not all portions of the book are relevant to all of the above courses. We assume the reader will retain this book after the particular course is done, and will use it as a reference book. Hopefully, others will obtain the book solely for reference purposes. We believe it will be especially useful for the working geologist or academic geologist seeking generalized and some moderately detailed information about a region or geological time interval which is unfamiliar.

Book excerpt: From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Thousand Acres—and "a diverse and masterly writer” (The New York Times Book Review)—comes an enthralling epic tale, written in the tradition of the old Norse sagas, that takes us to fourteenth-century Greenland and tells the story of a proud landowner and his unforgettable family. Jane Smiley brings us to a farflung place of glittering fjords, blasting winds, sun-warmed meadows, and high, dark mountains. This is the story of one family: proud landowner Asgeir Gunnarsson; his daughter Margret, whose willful independence leads her into passionate adultery and exile; and his son Gunnar, whose quest for knowledge is at the compelling center of this unforgettable book. Jane Smiley immerses us in this world of farmers, priests, and lawspeakers, of hunts and feasts and long-standing feuds, and by an act of literary magic, makes a remote time, place, and people not only real but dear to us.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The moment in 1958 when a sports car-crazed youth in Massachusetts saw his first Ferrari changed his life. And in 1967, with two partners and an investment of just $6,000 apiece, he would open a Ferrari-Porsche-Datsun dealership. This memoir follows his lifelong journey with Ferraris and other remarkable automobiles, as an enthusiast and dealer. Highlights include a nonstop drive from Chicago to Boston in a 308 GTB; rides with important figures like Piero Ferrari at Fiorano and Dario Benuzzi at Mugello; visits to the Ferrari, Maserati and Lamborghini factories; the horror of watching a delivery truck crash onto a row of new cars; and time at the wheel of such icons as the 365 GTB/4 "Daytona," 250 GTO, 288 GTO and F40.
