Book How Megaprojects Are Damaging Nigeria and How to Fix It

Download or read book How Megaprojects Are Damaging Nigeria and How to Fix It written by Jimoh Ibrahim and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since 1960, two-thirds of very large governmental projects in Nigeria have not only failed, but been abandoned mid-course. This presents a bigger failure rate than mega projects elsewhere, and yet there is no available data or analysis to help us understand the reasons behind such failures. This book provides an authoritative examination into why very large projects in Nigeria have failed so badly, and provides practical recommendations on how the Nigerian government can improve its project performance. Drawing on data from 38 very large projects (19 completed and 19 abandoned) with a total budget of over $25B, this book presents detailed analysis of these projects and in-depth case studies 11 of the projects, and presents lessons for improvement. Through this, the authors have identified a small number of key success drivers, and argue that making moderate improvements on any of them would, on average, save hundreds of millions of dollars on one large project alone. This open access book is a game-changer in the management of government mega projects in Nigeria. With clear implications for other developing economies, this is a vital resource for project management practitioners, executives and civil servants. Jimoh Ibrahim is a prominent businessman in Nigeria. He is also currently completing his Business Doctorate degree at the University of Cambridge, Judge Business School, and he is working on establishing a new University in Nigeria. Christoph Loch is Professor of Operations and Technology Management at the Cambridge Judge Business School. He served as the Dean of the school from 2011 to 2021. Kishore Sengupta is Professor of Operations and Technology Management at the Cambridge Judge Business School.

Book excerpt: There is a paradoxical relationship between democracy and development in Nigeria. In the twenty years of electoral democracy, poverty, inequality, unemployment, underemployment and insecurity have increased. The hopes of citizens that democracy would lead to improved living standards have been dashed. Social justice and inclusive sustainable development have also been elusive. The economy has remained dependent on 2 primary sectors - agriculture and oil - and low value added services. The aspiration that by 2020, Nigeria would become one of the twenty leading economies in the world has not been achieved, the political elite have captured the state for personal gains and unsurprisingly, Nigeria remains one of the most corrupt countries in the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I am an American Soldier, well trained, educated, nurtured and raised to be honest, to reduce waste, to do every project successfully at less cost and with military discipline and precision, to do what is right, legally and morally, and to unite and treat everyone, men and women, equally, fairly and justly. I am a Nigerian first and foremost. I am also an American citizen. I was born and raised in Ugborodo Village (where Chevron exploits crude oil), Delta State of Nigeria. I am the best Candidate for the Presidency of Nigeria in 2015 (with a woman as my Vice-President) because I have a vision to rescue Nigeria's economy, by investing heavily in science and technology with our oil money, establishing new universities, the equivalent of Harvard, Yale, MIT and Oxford or better, in the rural areas of Nigeria, to pull people from the congested cities to a more siren, natural environment in the rural areas, to establish a state-of-the-art science laboratory attached to these new universities in the rural areas, establish farm and manufacturing plant to be attached to every university in Nigeria, because everything taught in the new Nigerian schools, colleges and universities must have real life applications to the students, and most important, to establish a Federal and State agencies for the protection of the environment, from pollution and damage to our ecology and our environment, with strict enforcement and punitive measures for violators, because my leadership is going to protect Nigeria's fresh water (both underground water, surface water, etc), and establish beautiful National Parks all over the new Nigeria and under my leadership in the new Nigeria, the government is going to invest heavily in fresh water (as the next equivalent of crude oil) and export it to countries all over the world, as a major source of revenue. Also, by providing free education, the equivalent of the education at Harvard and Oxford universities, or better, for all Nigerians to get a professional degree or skill and to get free monthly allowance of $100-$500, plus free feeding and accommodations for all the students while in the university, (and three million naira for all new graduates to settle down in the New Nigeria) to share the oil wealth with all Nigerians by giving out grants of $2,500 to $6,500 to all Nigerians who cannot attend the university, to start a business and become self-reliant, to provide for all Nigerians with the oil wealth by giving monthly allowance of $100-$500 to all disabled people and all old people of 65 years and above with no source of income, to invest heavily in science, technology, agriculture, infrastructures, eliminate crime almost to zero level, by making everyone in the new Nigeria well educated and well taken care of financially, and placing so much emphasis on integrity, morality and ethics (that is, doing only what is excellent, doing what is right, legally and morally) and thereafter bring American big corporations, Chinese corporations and European corporations to outsource into Nigeria's economy with friendly rules and without any tax if they commit to help our economy, to develop the Nigerian economy to be on the same level with the United States in about four years with the help of Nigerians and with the help of some of the best engineers and scientists in the United States Army (where I am a member) and/or in the United States society, and thereby making Nigeria and the United States of America have unbreakable bonds, economically, politically, socially and otherwise.

Book Fixing Stereotypes My Way My Story of Two Decades in Nigeria

Download or read book Fixing Stereotypes My Way My Story of Two Decades in Nigeria written by Harbhajan S. Batth and published by Harbhajan S. Batth. This book was released on 2020-02-27 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The phenomenon of stereotyping is commonly used to make things mindlessly easier for us to understand. To categorize individuals and to classify them into groups so we can make sense of the world. We use it in various contexts: "Indians are snobs, arrogant and underendowed, Chinese do not know how to drive, blondes are dumb, Nigerians are scammers etc." We are all guilty of stereotyping at some point in our lives. It may be base on nationality, color of skin, gender, race etc. The categorization of a group of people that we tend to pigeon-hole is based on but limited to our personal experiences, what is showcased and broadcast in media, the stories that we have heard and so on; but we make the mistake to apply it to an entire group.Having spent two decades of my life in West Africa, through this book I intend to challenge the epidemic of stereotyping of Nigeria. There is corruption in Nigeria but don't label the entire country as being corrupt, there is corruption in India too. There are scams in Nigeria but don't label all Nigerian as scammers, there are scams in Hong Kong too. There is drug trafficking in Nigeria but don't label all Nigerian as drug peddlers, there is drug trafficking in Mexico too. What follows in this book shall give a window into the consciousness of the minds housing Nigerian stereotypes. Please be mindful that along the way the filter of typecasts will cloud your vision. Therefore, through my narrative based on first-hand experiences, I invite you to get to know what Nigeria and Nigerians are all about.Remember, oftentimes the reality is far more attractive and superior than we dare to acknowledge.

Book The Transformation of Title IX

Download or read book The Transformation of Title IX written by R. Shep Melnick and published by Brookings Institution Press. This book was released on 2018-03-06 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One civil rights-era law has reshaped American society—and contributed to the country's ongoing culture wars Few laws have had such far-reaching impact as Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. Intended to give girls and women greater access to sports programs and other courses of study in schools and colleges, the law has since been used by judges and agencies to expand a wide range of antidiscrimination policies—most recently the Obama administration’s 2016 mandates on sexual harassment and transgender rights. In this comprehensive review of how Title IX has been implemented, Boston College political science professor R. Shep Melnick analyzes how interpretations of "equal educational opportunity" have changed over the years. In terms accessible to non-lawyers, Melnick examines how Title IX has become a central part of legal and political campaigns to correct gender stereotypes, not only in academic settings but in society at large. Title IX thus has become a major factor in America's culture wars—and almost certainly will remain so for years to come.

Book Alleviating Soil Fertility Constraints to Increased Crop Production in West Africa

Download or read book Alleviating Soil Fertility Constraints to Increased Crop Production in West Africa written by A. Uzo Mokwunye and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tropical Africa escaped from the glaciers that covered the temperate parts of the world during the Ice Age. The legacy is that most of the parent materials of the soils of tropical Africa are old, highly weathered and devoid of bases and phosphate-bearing minerals. Traditional farming systems which were relatively stable and sustainable relied on long fallow periods after one to two years of cropping to maintain the productive capacity of the soils. In recent times and especially in densely populated areas, a sizeable class of 'landless' farmers have begun to cultivate marginal lands or to invade the 'forest reserves' thereby exacerbating the problems of land and environ mental degradation. of soil fertility that will facilitate the production of adequate quantities of the principle Maintaining a level staples has become a major challenge to agricultural scientists in tropical Africa. To increase the nutrient supplying power of soils requires the inputs of fertilizers. These can be organic or inorganic. The efficiency with which these externally supplied inputs can increase agricultural production and reduce soil and environmental deterioration is dependent on the ability of scientists to determine the right types and quantities of the products to apply to each soil, crop and cropping system as well as the ability of farmers to acquire requisite farm manage ment skills.
