Book Statistics And Control Of Stochastic Processes The Liptser Festschrift

Download or read book Statistics And Control Of Stochastic Processes The Liptser Festschrift written by Yu M Kabanov and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-12-04 with total page 378 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains papers presented at the Steklov Seminar on Statistics and Control of Stochastic Processes. For the past three decades, the seminar has determined the development, in a number of important directions, of the theory of random processes not only in the USSR (now Russia) but in the whole world. It was organised by A N Shiryaev in collaboration with N V Krylov and R Sh Liptser. It started off with optimal stopping and filtering with applications to engineering, and very soon extended its interests to more general problems of stochastic control, causal and anticipating stochastic calculus, limit theorems for semimartingales, martingale methods in queueing theory, foundations of statistics of random processes and, in recent years, mathematical finance. Many studies, for example of stochastic PDEs or extended stochastic integrals, anticipated largely Western works. The contributions in this book are devoted to the hottest topics and united by a martingale methodology which was the key idea of the seminar.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The modern theory of Sequential Analysis came into existence simultaneously in the United States and Great Britain in response to demands for more efficient sampling inspection procedures during World War II. The develop ments were admirably summarized by their principal architect, A. Wald, in his book Sequential Analysis (1947). In spite of the extraordinary accomplishments of this period, there remained some dissatisfaction with the sequential probability ratio test and Wald's analysis of it. (i) The open-ended continuation region with the concomitant possibility of taking an arbitrarily large number of observations seems intol erable in practice. (ii) Wald's elegant approximations based on "neglecting the excess" of the log likelihood ratio over the stopping boundaries are not especially accurate and do not allow one to study the effect oftaking observa tions in groups rather than one at a time. (iii) The beautiful optimality property of the sequential probability ratio test applies only to the artificial problem of testing a simple hypothesis against a simple alternative. In response to these issues and to new motivation from the direction of controlled clinical trials numerous modifications of the sequential probability ratio test were proposed and their properties studied-often by simulation or lengthy numerical computation. (A notable exception is Anderson, 1960; see III.7.) In the past decade it has become possible to give a more complete theoretical analysis of many of the proposals and hence to understand them better.

Book Statistics and Control of Random Processes

Download or read book Statistics and Control of Random Processes written by A. A. Novikov and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1994 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains papers by participants in two seminars, one on martingales and statistics of stochastic processes, and one on sequential analysis, both of which were held at the Steklov Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences. The papers develop the concepts of martingales and seminmartingales and stochastic calculus for them, as well as their applications in statistics and control of stochastic processes. The class of semimartingales - that is, the class of all processes which can be represented as a sum of a martingale and a process with bounded variation - is rather large. It contains such important processes as Brownian motion, Poisson processes, solutions of stochastic differential equations, and others. The papers treat theoretical aspects of statistics of stochastic processes as well as specific models of stochastic processes from the standpoint of their statistics and control. The collection is intended for undergraduate and graduate students and researchers in probability theory and mathematical statistics.

  • Author : Herbert Robbins
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 1461251109
  • Pages : 530 pages

Download or read book Selected Papers written by Herbert Robbins and published by Springer. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Herbert Robbins is widely recognized as one of the most creative and original mathematical statisticians of our time. The purpose of this book is to reprint, on the occasion of his seventieth birthday, some of his most outstanding research. In making selections for reprinting we have tried to keep in mind three potential audiences: (1) the historian who would like to know Robbins' seminal role in stimulating a substantial proportion of current research in mathematical statistics; (2) the novice who would like a readable, conceptually oriented introduction to these subjects; and (3) the expert who would like to have useful reference material in a single collection. In many cases the needs of the first two groups can be met simulta neously. A distinguishing feature of Robbins' research is its daring originality, which literally creates new specialties for subsequent generations of statisticians to explore. Often these seminal papers are also models of exposition serving to introduce the reader, in the simplest possible context, to ideas that are important for contemporary research in the field. An example is the paper of Robbins and Monro which initiated the subject of stochastic approximation. We have also attempted to provide some useful guidance to the literature in various subjects by supplying additional references, particularly to books and survey articles, with some remarks about important developments in these areas.

Book Stable Convergence and Stable Limit Theorems

Download or read book Stable Convergence and Stable Limit Theorems written by Erich Häusler and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-09 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors present a concise but complete exposition of the mathematical theory of stable convergence and give various applications in different areas of probability theory and mathematical statistics to illustrate the usefulness of this concept. Stable convergence holds in many limit theorems of probability theory and statistics – such as the classical central limit theorem – which are usually formulated in terms of convergence in distribution. Originated by Alfred Rényi, the notion of stable convergence is stronger than the classical weak convergence of probability measures. A variety of methods is described which can be used to establish this stronger stable convergence in many limit theorems which were originally formulated only in terms of weak convergence. Naturally, these stronger limit theorems have new and stronger consequences which should not be missed by neglecting the notion of stable convergence. The presentation will be accessible to researchers and advanced students at the master's level with a solid knowledge of measure theoretic probability.

Book Inference and Asymptotics

Download or read book Inference and Asymptotics written by D.R. Cox and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-03-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Likelihood and its many associated concepts are of central importance in statistical theory and applications. The theory of likelihood and of likelihood-like objects (pseudo-likelihoods) has undergone extensive and important developments over the past 10 to 15 years, in particular as regards higher order asymptotics. This book provides an account of this field, which is still vigorously expanding. Conditioning and ancillarity underlie the p*-formula, a key formula for the conditional density of the maximum likelihood estimator, given an ancillary statistic. Various types of pseudo-likelihood are discussed, including profile and partial likelihoods. Special emphasis is given to modified profile likelihood and modified directed likelihood, and their intimate connection with the p*-formula. Among the other concepts and tools employed are sufficiency, parameter orthogonality, invariance, stochastic expansions and saddlepoint approximations. Brief reviews are given of the most important properties of exponential and transformation models and these types of model are used as test-beds for the general asymptotic theory. A final chapter briefly discusses a number of more general issues, including prediction and randomization theory. The emphasis is on ideas and methods, and detailed mathematical developments are largely omitted. There are numerous notes and exercises, many indicating substantial further results.
