Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five Years Penal Servitude The Publishers, before offering this work to the public, have satisfied themselves that the following narrative is what it purports to be - the genuine record of five years' penal servitude by one who endured it. It is given to the public in the hope that its statements may secure the attention of the thoughtful, and bring about some of the changes suggested in its pages. Of these a classification of prisoners, and a diminution of the term of imprisonment for first offences, seem most to call for attention. Book excerpt: Established in 1853, after the end of penal transportation to Australia, the convict prison system and the sentence of penal servitude offered the most severe form of punishment – short of death – in the criminal justice system, and they remained in place for nearly a century. Penal Servitude is the first comprehensive study to examine the convict prison system that housed all those who were sentenced to penal servitude during this time. Helen Johnston, Barry Godfrey, and David Cox detail the administration and evolution of the system, from its creation in the 1850s and the building of the prison estate to the classification of prisoners within it. Exploring life in the convict prison through the experiences of the people who were subjected to it, the authors shed light on various details such as prison diet, education, and labour. What they find reveals the internal regimes; the everyday endurances, conformity, resistance, and rule breaking of convicts; and the interactions with the warders, medical officers, and governors that shaped daily life in the system. Reconstructing the life histories of hundreds of convict prisoners from detailed prison records, criminal registers, census data, and personal correspondence, Penal Servitude illuminates the lives of those who experienced long-term imprisonment in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Download or read book History of the Sinn Fein Movement and the Irish Rebellion of 1916 written by Francis P. Jones and published by . This book was released on 1917 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sinn Fein (Gaelic for "We Ourselves") was founded to promote the cultural revival and political independence of Ireland. History of the Sinn Fein Movement and the Irish Rebellion of 1916 is a detailed history of the movement, written by Francis P. Jones, a former member of the movement who had immigrated to the United States from Ireland. The book covers the period from the founding of Sinn Fein in Dublin in 1905 to the Easter Rising of April 1916. It deals with the economic, cultural, religious, and political aspects of Irish independence, as well as the twists and turns of British policy and the debates in Parliament over Home Rule. More than half of the book is a detailed account of the Easter Rising, based on documentary sources and the first-hand accounts of men involved in the fighting who had fled to the United States. The final chapters deal with the aftermath of the uprising, including the trial and execution of its leaders. A chapter on the "Women of the Nation" is by the author's wife, to whom the book is dedicated. The introduction is by John W. Goff (1848-1924), an immigrant from Ireland who was prominent in New York as a lawyer and judge. The appendix, "Ireland's Roll of Honor," contains a complete list of the names of the men killed in the fighting of April 1916 and of those sentenced to penal servitude, hard labor, or prison. The appendix concludes with details of the numbers of men deported and jailed without trial.
