Book Five Years in South Mississippi Classic Reprint

Download or read book Five Years in South Mississippi Classic Reprint written by T. S. Powell and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Five Years in South Mississippi Some five years ago, while yet engaged in plans and labors for the religious development of a section of country in South Mississippi, I conceived the purpose of writing an account of those labors. The motive which prompted me was not, I trust, so much a sense of self-importance as of the importance of the work in that section. There was presented the prospect of a large territory of Christianized country, prevailingly Baptistic, yet comparatively undeveloped in benevolence, and resting in a rather low state of religious activity. The progress which I felt bound to urge was in the line of more frequent public services and increased activity in all the departments of church work. To develop the latent energies of the churches which I served, to marshal their forces for more general efforts, and inspire them with greater zeal for the blessings of religion upon themselves, and strengthen their aspirations to extend the saving influence to more destitute communities, was the wish which lay nearest my heart; to this end my efforts were chiefly directed. Nor was I alone in the pursuance of this special object. It was evident that other brethren and pastors were diligently working in the same line. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gideon's Band: A Tale of the Mississippi Saturday, April, 1852. There was a fervor in the sky as of an August noon, although the clocks of the city would presently strike five. Dazzling white clouds, about to show the earliest flush of the sun's decline, beamed down upon a turbid river harbor, where the water was deep so close inshore that the port's unbroken mile of steamboat wharf nowhere stretched out into the boiling flood. Instead it merely lined the shore, the steamers packing in bow on with their noses to it, their stems out in the stream, their fenders chafing each other's lower guards. Book Coming of Age in Mississippi

Download or read book Coming of Age in Mississippi written by Anne Moody and published by Dell. This book was released on 2011-09-07 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The unforgettable memoir of a woman at the front lines of the civil rights movement—a harrowing account of black life in the rural South and a powerful affirmation of one person’s ability to affect change. “Anne Moody’s autobiography is an eloquent, moving testimonial to her courage.”—Chicago Tribune Born to a poor couple who were tenant farmers on a plantation in Mississippi, Anne Moody lived through some of the most dangerous days of the pre-civil rights era in the South. The week before she began high school came the news of Emmet Till’s lynching. Before then, she had “known the fear of hunger, hell, and the Devil. But now there was . . . the fear of being killed just because I was black.” In that moment was born the passion for freedom and justice that would change her life. A straight-A student who realized her dream of going to college when she won a basketball scholarship, she finally dared to join the NAACP in her junior year. Through the NAACP and later through CORE and SNCC, she experienced firsthand the demonstrations and sit-ins that were the mainstay of the civil rights movement—and the arrests and jailings, the shotguns, fire hoses, police dogs, billy clubs, and deadly force that were used to destroy it. A deeply personal story but also a portrait of a turning point in our nation’s destiny, this autobiography lets us see history in the making, through the eyes of one of the footsoldiers in the civil rights movement. Praise for Coming of Age in Mississippi “A history of our time, seen from the bottom up, through the eyes of someone who decided for herself that things had to be changed . . . a timely reminder that we cannot now relax.”—Senator Edward Kennedy, The New York Times Book Review “Something is new here . . . rural southern black life begins to speak. It hits the page like a natural force, crude and undeniable and, against all principles of beauty, beautiful.”—The Nation “Engrossing, sensitive, beautiful . . . so candid, so honest, and so touching, as to make it virtually impossible to put down.”—San Francisco Sun-Reporter

Book The Storied South

Book excerpt: The Storied South features the voices--by turn searching and honest, coy and scathing--of twenty-six of the most luminous artists and thinkers in the American cultural firmament, from Eudora Welty, Pete Seeger, and Alice Walker to William Eggleston, Bobby Rush, and C. Vann Woodward. Masterfully drawn from one-on-one interviews conducted by renowned folklorist William Ferris over the past forty years, the book reveals how storytelling is viscerally tied to southern identity and how the work of these southern or southern-inspired creators has shaped the way Americans think and talk about the South. The Storied South offers a unique, intimate opportunity to sit at the table with these men and women and learn how they worked and how they perceived their art. The volume also features 45 of Ferris's striking photographic portraits of the speakers and a CD and a DVD of original audio and films of the interviews.
