Book excerpt: Health and medicine cannot be understood without considering the role of nurses, both as professionals and as working women. In India, unlike other countries, nurses have suffered an exceptional degree of neglect at the hands of state, a situation that has been detrimental to the quality of both rural and urban health care. Charting the history of the development of nursing in India over 100 years, Indian Sisters examines the reasons why nurses have so consistently been sidelined and excluded from health care governance and policymaking. The book challenges the routine suggestion that nursing’s poor status is mainly attributable to socio-cultural factors, such as caste, limitations on female mobility and social taboos. It argues instead that many of its problems are due to an under-achieved relationship between a patriarchal state on the one hand, and weak professional nursing organisations shaped by their colonial roots on the other. It also explores how the recent phenomenon of large-scale emigration of nurses to the West (leading to better pay, working conditions and career prospects) has transformed the profession, lifting its status dramatically. At the same time, it raises questions about the implications of emigration for the fate of health care system in India. An important contribution to the growing academic genre of nursing history, the book is essential reading for scholars and students of health care, the history of medicine, gender and women’s studies, sociology, and migration studies. It will also be useful to policymakers and health professionals.

Hence, budgetary expenditure to be mobilized for such investments needs to be efficiently allocated and utilized to maximize the greatest good. This book focuses on the social sector in India and provides an overview of the sector. The book looks at 15 major Indian states between the year 2000-2011 to see how these states had invested in social sector and whether they had met the criteria of efficient social sector investment. Using stochastic frontier models, the book provides an efficiency norm and making use of this normative estimate, it compares performance across 15 Indian states and suggests important policy implications to improve the future performance of the social sector. Download or read book Corporate Social Responsibility Critiques Policies and Strategies Vol 2 written by Prasenjit Maiti and published by Scientific Publishers. This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Corporate Social Responsibility as an analytical tool can be used in the field of Business Management to facilitate different business practices from both an ethical angle and a utilitarian perspective. Business managers should try to entrench networks of trust, loyalty and cooperation within and without their organizations. This also makes good business sense in terms of rational choice theory. Good business is also about establishing customer-friendly images in a manner that highlights values such as reliability, trustworthiness, quality, economy and durability. These values evolve over time and are underpinned by a sustained relationship of confidence. So specific products more often than not become identified with brand names either for niche or for broadbased markets. Brand equity and positioning so generally depend upon the successful merchandizing of products and their images. The problematique of this edited anthology is structured around the polemic of civil societal institutions (networks and embeddedness) and democratic governance (inclusive growth and participatory development) among other critical areas of social scientific research. This line of theoretical research is expected to contribute new knowledge and facilitate innovative research to better understand the interactions and interplay between actors and their institutions. This anthology would benefit corporate managers, business leaders, management researchers / students, social scientists and the general reader.
