Book The Wealth of Forests

Download or read book The Wealth of Forests written by Chris Tollefson and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These are turbulent, unpredictable, yet opportune times for Canadian forestry. Never before have competing demands on Canada’s forest resources been so great. At the same time, we are finally being forced to confront the sustainable limit of these resources. Now, the improbable has happened: government, industry, First Nationa, and NGOs appear to be part of an emerging consensus that industrial forestry in Canada must change. The Wealth of Forests is a pioneering attempt to grapple with the policy implications of the transition to sustainable forestry. While much has been written on the theory and practice of sustainable forestry and on the relative merits of regulatory versus market approaches to environmental protection, these literatures have nnot as yet been bridged. Using illustrations based on recent developments in British Columbia forest policy, this collection provides that bridge by analyzing the potential and limits of market, regulatory, and other policy instruments as means of achieving sustainability. Featuring new work by many of Canada’s leading forest policy scholars, this interdisciplinary collection is devoted to translating the concept of sustainability into practice in key areas of forest policy, including tenure, timber pricing, forest practices, land-use zoning, and eco-certification. The Wealth of Forests also considers how domestic and international legal regimes might constrain the adoption of policies that could bring us close to the elusive goal of sustainable forestry.

Book Riparian Research and Management Past Present Future Volume 1

Download or read book Riparian Research and Management Past Present Future Volume 1 written by U.S. Department of Agriculture and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2019-04-06 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fifty years ago, riparian habitats were not recognized for their extensive and critical contributions to wildlife and the ecosystem function of watersheds. This changed as riparian values were identified and documented, and the science of riparian ecology developed steadily. Papers in this volume range from the more mesic northwestern United States to the arid Southwest and Mexico. More than two dozen authors?most with decades of experience?review the origins of riparian science in the western United States, document what is currently known about riparian ecosystems, and project future needs. Topics are widespread and include: interactions with fire, climate change, and declining water; impacts from exotic species; unintended consequences of biological control; the role of small mammals; watershed response to beavers; watershed and riparian changes; changes below large dams; water birds of the Colorado River Delta; and terrestrial vertebrates of mesquite bosques.

Book Emerging Issues in Forest Policy

Download or read book Emerging Issues in Forest Policy written by Peter N. Nemetz and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 1992 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout history, forests have played a central role in thedevelopment of human civilization -- providing everything from fuel andstructural materials to a multitude of paper products. It is, however, becoming increasingly apparent that the forests and their wealth ofresources bear directly upon many of the most pressing social, economic, and environmental concerns of our time. This volume draws together forty of the foremost experts in forestpolicy to address the diverse range of issues which characterize theintimate relationship between forests and humankind. These include theregional and global environment, timber supply, competitiveness andinternational trade, social impacts, multiple and competing resourceuse, and the Third World. Five critical questions summarize the focus of this work: - To what extent is the direct utilization of forests contributingto the decline of this vital resource, and how does the loss of globalforests affect essential components of our ecosystem? - How can we formulate and implement policies which will guaranteethe continued supply of adequate forest resources for this and futuregenerations, and, in particular, how critical are societal concepts ofownership and tenure to the achievement of this goal? - How crucial are technological change and international trade insustaining a healthy forest sector and dependent economy? - How can we remedy the negative social impacts of our foresteconomy and integrate the management of our forests with otherresources essential to human welfare? - What are the central issues that affect forest practice andutilization in the Third World? This comprehensive and timely book sheds light on many of thefundamental questions affecting one of the world's most importantresources.

Book Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Universities

Download or read book Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Universities written by Committee on the Future of the Colleges of Agriculture in the Land Grant System and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1995-10-11 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although few Americans work as farmers these days, agriculture on the whole remains economically important--playing a key role in such contemporary issues as consumer health and nutrition, worker safety and animal welfare, and environmental protection. This publication provides a comprehensive picture of the primary education system for the nation's agriculture industry: the land grant colleges of agriculture. Colleges of Agriculture at the Land Grant Universities informs the public debate about the challenges that will shape the future of these colleges and serves as a foundation for a second volume, which will present recommendations for policy and institutional changes in the land grant system. This book reviews the legislative history of the land grant system from its establishment in 1862 to the 1994 act conferring land grant status on Native American colleges. It describes trends that have shaped agriculture and agricultural education over the decades--the shift of labor from farm to factory, reasons for and effects of increased productivity and specialization, the rise of the corporate farm, and more. The committee reviews the system's three-part mission--education, research, and extension service--and through this perspective documents the changing nature of funding and examines the unique structure of the U.S. agricultural research and education system. Demographic data on faculties, students, extension staff, commodity and funding clusters, and geographic specializations profile the system and identify similarities and differences among the colleges of agriculture, trends in funding, and a host of other issues. The tables in the appendix provide further itemization about general population distribution, student and educator demographics, types of degree programs, and funding allocations. Concise commentary and informative graphics augment the detailed statistical presentations. This book will be important to policymakers, administrators, educators, researchers, and students of agriculture.
