Book Ploughing New Ground

Download or read book Ploughing New Ground written by Getnet Bekele and published by Boydell & Brewer. This book was released on 2017 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In October 2016, the Ethiopian administration declared a State of Emergency in response to anti-Government demonstrations and mass riots. Officially said to result from subversive activities channelled from Eritrea, Egypt and diasporic populations in the West, the evidence in fact suggests that the riots stemmed from widespread internal dissatisfaction. Large-scale land dispossessions following bilateral deals with transnational agribusiness, damming of major rivers, construction of sugar estates and industry parks as well as urban sprawl have put pressure on agricultural and rural areas. Today, displacement, drought and widening inequalities surround fears of severe food shortages and political instability. Drawing on informant testimonies, court archives, field reports and other sources, the author examines these developments in Ethiopia's lake region. He shows how transformations over time in spatial politics, state-society relations and the organization of production and exchange have influenced the situation today, and reveals the impact of these changes on a population of smallholder farmers for which agriculture is not only the mainstay of the national economy but a way of life. Getnet Bekele is Associate Professor of History at Oakland University, MI, where he teaches African History and the Environmental and Economic History of Africa and the Global South.

Book Developing Heritage Developing Countries

Download or read book Developing Heritage Developing Countries written by Marie Huber and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-11-23 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of development has paid only little attention to cultural projects. This book looks at the development politics that shaped the UNESCO World Heritage programme, with a case study of Ethiopian World Heritage sites from the 1960s to the 1980s. In a large-scale conservation and tourism planning project, selected sites were set up and promoted as images of the Ethiopian nation. This story serves to illustrate UNESCO’s role in constructing a “useful past” in many African countries engaged in the process of nation-building. UNESCO experts and Ethiopian elites had a shared interest in producing a portfolio of antiquities and national parks to underwrite Ethiopia’s imperial claims to regional hegemony with ancient history. The key findings of this book highlight a continuity in Ethiopian history, despite the political ruptures caused by the 1974 revolution and UNESCO’s transformation from knowledge producer to actual provider of development policies. The particular focus on the bureaucratic and political practices of heritage, bridges a gap between cultural heritage studies and the history of international organisations. The result is a first study of the global discourse on heritage as it emerged in the 1960s development decade.

Book Development and the Debt Trap

Download or read book Development and the Debt Trap written by Andrzej Krassowski and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-11-26 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ghana is one of the earliest and most serious examples of the build up of foreign debt by a developing country to support its policies for economic growth. This study, first published in 1974 in conjunction with the Overseas Development Institute, analyses Ghana’s economy over twenty years and highlights the problems of the debtor/creditor relationship between developed and developing countries. The study concludes with an assessment of the creditors’ contribution to Ghana’s critical debt position through their readiness to supply funds without adequately analysing the viability of the programmes they supported and through the repayment and interest terms they offered – terms which were too heavy for Ghana to meet.
