Much more down to earth-figuratively, if not literally, than his later works, his heroes here encounter no lost civilizations, no anachronistic dinosaurs, and no extraordinary perils beyond that which actual explorers of the era might have met on a balloon voyage across the Dark Continent.

ABOUT THE BOOK: Original publication: 1863 Book 1 A scholar and explorer, Dr. Samuel Fergusson, accompanied by his manservant Joe and his friend professional hunter Richard "Dick" Kennedy, sets out to travel across the African continent — still not fully explored — with the help of a balloon filled with hydrogen. The trip begins in Zanzibar on the east coast, and passes across Lake Victoria, Lake Chad, Agadez, Timbuktu, Djenné and Ségou to St Louis in modern-day Senegal on the west coast. The book describes the unknown interior of Africa near modern-day Central African Republic as a desert, when it is actually savanna. A good deal of the initial exploration is to focus on the finding of the source of the Nile. The second leg is to link up the other explorers. There are numerous scenes of adventure, composed of either a conflict with a native or a conflict with the environment, including Rescuing a missionary from tribal sacrifice, running out of water while stranded without a wind over the Sahara, an attack on the balloon by bearded vultures, rescuing Joe later, and narrowly escaping the remnants of a militant army as the balloon dwindles to nothingness with the loss of hydrogen. Chapters 44 Words: 91,000 This book is great for schools, teachers and students or for the casual reader, and makes a wonderful addition to any classic literary library ABOUT US: At Pure Snow Publishing we have taken the time and care into formatting this book to make it the best possible reading experience. Book excerpt: FREDERICK PAUL WALTER'S new translation of Jules Verne's Five Weeks in a Balloon is the latest in a distinguished series of Wesleyan University Press editions of Verne's novels. Delightful illustrations of the original Parisian edition of 1863 generously decorate the beautifully produced volume. Walter's adroit translation captures the verve and pace of Verne's French, bringing this classic to life in English in a way that -- as with much of Verne's work -- previous translations have fallen sadly short of accomplishing.Walter's readable, welcoming introduction and explanatory notes, a full bibliography of Verne's work and of selected secondary sources and criticism, a brief biography of Verne, and a "Gallery of Heroes" identifying the many explorers, travel writers, and other 19th-century figures referenced in the novel supplement the text. In short, this new edition makes a classic piece of French speculative fiction accessible to English readers in an admirably attractive and usable way.Five Weeks in a Balloon, Verne's first great commercial success, was one of his most enduringly popular novels. It has perhaps been overshadowed, at least in the Anglophone world, by some of his better-known later works such as Around the World in Eighty Days, Journey to the Center of the Earth, Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea, and The Mysterious Island.

Book excerpt: Five Weeks in a Balloon, or, Journeys and Discoveries in Africa by Three Englishmen (French: Cinq semaines en ballon) is an adventure novel by Jules Verne, published in 1863. It is the first novel in which he perfected the "ingredients" of his later work, skillfully mixing a plot full of adventure and twists that hold the reader's interest with passages of technical, geographic, and historic description. The book gives readers a glimpse of the exploration of Africa, which was still not completely known to Europeans of the time, with explorers traveling all over the continent in search of its secrets. Public interest in fanciful tales of African exploration was at its height, and the book was an instant hit; it made Verne financially independent and got him a contract with Jules Hetzel's publishing house, which put out several dozen more works of his for over forty years afterward.
