Book excerpt: Martin Luther posted his Ninety-five Theses on the church door at Wittenberg in 1517. In the three years that followed, Luther clarified and defended his position in numerous writings. Chief among these are the three treatises written in 1520. In these writings Luther tried to frame his ideas in terms that would be comprehensible not only to the clergy but to people from a wide range of backgrounds. To the Christian Nobility of the German Nation is an attack on the corruption of the church and the abuses of its authority, bringing to light many of the underlying reasons for the Reformation. The second treatise, The Babylonian Captivity of the Church, contains Luther's sharp criticism of the sacramental system of the Catholic church. The Freedom of a Christian gives a concise presentation of Luther's position on the doctrine of justification by faith. The translations of these treatises are all taken from the American edition of Luther's Works. This new edition of Three Treatises will continue to be a popular resource for individual study, church school classes, and college and seminary courses.

Book The Treatises of Later Han

Download or read book The Treatises of Later Han written by B.J. Mansvelt Beck and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-02-22 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The official history of the Later Han dynasty (AD 25-220) contains eight so-called Treatises, traditionally regarded as accurate descriptions of the dynasty's institutions. Practically all literature dealing with the bureaucratic system, the geography, the religious beliefs or the calendar of the first two centuries AD is based on these Treatises, even though their value as source material has never been critically examined. This study subjects each of the Treatises in turn to a detailed scrutiny. The sources used by the Chinese historian and their adaption to suit his historiographical tastes, the opinions of previous critics and the weight of the available evidence all pass review in order to arrive at a balanced view of the historiographical value of each individual Treatise.

Book The Doctrinal Treatises

    Book Details:
  • Author : St. Augustine of Hippo
  • Publisher : Jazzybee Verlag
  • Release : 2017-08-31
  • ISBN : 3849675343
  • Pages : 464 pages

Download or read book The Doctrinal Treatises written by St. Augustine of Hippo and published by Jazzybee Verlag. This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most weighty of the doctrinal treatises is that on the Holy Trinity. The Latin original (De Trinitate contra Arianos libri quindecim), is contained in the 8th volume of the Benedictine edition. It is the most elaborate, and probably also the ablest and profoundest patristic discussion of this central doctrine of the Christian religion, unless we except the Orations against the Arians, by Athanasius, "the Father of Orthodoxy," who devoted his life to the defense of the Divinity of Christ. Augustine, owing to his defective knowledge of Greek, wrote his work independently of the previous treatises of the Eastern Church on that subject. He bestowed more time and care upon it than on any other book, except the City of God. Besides this treatise the following works are included: The Enchiridion, or On Faith, Hope and Love, On the Catechising of the Uninstructed, Treatise on Faith and the Creed, Concerning Faith of Things not Seen, On the Profit of Believing On the Creed.

Download or read book Spanish Treatises on Government Society and Religion in the Time of Philip II written by Ronald Truman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 1999-09-09 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Centred on a dozen texts in Spanish or Latin composed by Spaniards - both laymen and clergy - in the Spanish Netherlands as well as Spain, this study follows the debate during Philip II's reign concerning the principles, purposes and values - both secular and religious - relevant to rulers and to society at large. Part I examines three treatises produced in the Spanish Netherlands in the 1550s; Parts II and III respectively study works from the Kingdoms of Castile and the Crown of Aragon in the 1570s and 1580s; Part IV considers three Jesuit treatises of the 1590s. The resultant picture will interest those concerned with the intellectual, religious, social and political values of Philip II's Spain, whether as considered within its own boundaries or in the larger intellectual context of Western Europe.
