Book excerpt: St. Gregory of Nazianzus (329 - 390, also known as Gregory the Theologian or Gregory Nazianzen) held the important post of, Archbishop of Constantinople at the height of its power. Many regard him as one of the most accomplished orators of the patristic age. In particular, he is famous for his discourses on Trinitarian theology. Along with the brothers St. Basil the Great, and St. Gregory of Nyssa, he is regarded as one of the Cappadocian Fathers. Gregory of Nazianzus is venerated as a saint both in the Orthodox and Catholic church and is considered a Doctor of the Catholic church. In the Orthodox Church, he is reckoned as one of the Three Holy Hierarchs, along with St. Basil the Great and St. John Chrysostom. The theological brilliance of St. Gregory is forcefully displayed in these five orations in which he expounds upon of the mystery of the Trinity, which would later be formally enshrined in the Nicene Creed. Book excerpt: This book assembles the evidence for what the Greek Fathers, the men whose contructive thought underlies the creeds, really thought and taught about the nature of God. It shows that they were original thinkers, with a profound reverence for the text of the Scriptures, and minds keenly tranined to discuss what ultimate truths were expressed in the scriptural text and what reality should be ascribed to Christian religious experience. The results indicate that a good deal which is assumed in current theological text-books needs to be revised. The Fathers had to reconcile monotheism with faith in a Trinity of divine Persons. In the process, they pursued many lines of inquiry, often only to discard them after trial, but after following various clues and making various intellectual adventures they reached a solution of the problem, which was both true to their data and philosophically reasonable. Though the bulk of the book is concerned with the third and fourth centuries, during which the creeds were in the process of formulation, the story is carried down to the eighth century where the progress of original thought came to a standstill. It is shown that a great change came over the philosophical tradition during the sixth century, and owing to the consequent growth of formalism, a genuine outbreak of tritheism occurred. The book ends with the account of how this outbreak was met and overcome, largely through the efforts of a thinker whose very name is unknown, and whose book has only survived under the name of another man.

Together, in the Fourth Century, they defended the orthodox doctrine of the Trinity against Arian sects that denied the Consubstantiality of the Son (of one and the same substance or being) with the Father and the Deity and Personality of the Holy Spirit. "His principal opponents were the followers of Eunomius and Macedonius". "Eunomius was the first person to discontinue using the triune formula in baptism. He believed that God can be "perfectly known and comprehended by the human intellect;" and denied the full Deity of the Son; attributing full Deity only to the Father; As an Arian, he claimed there was a time when the Son did not exist, He was the Father's first creation and His Essence is altogether unlike that of the Father. Macedonius, accepted "the statement that the Son was Like in Essence to the Father", but declared the Holy Spirit to be a mere creature and the servant or minister of the Son. In response to these heretical movements, Gregory wrote The Five Theological Orations; and preached them at a church called Anastasia, in Constantinople, between 379 and 381. To Gregory, the Doctrine of the Holy Trinity is the fundamental dogma of the Christian faith. His defense of the Godhead (in particular the Deity of the Son) in his Orations, earned him the proper moniker, The Theologian.

Rather such an attempt becomes in many cases the occasion of a change for the worse. The hopelessly-diseased and now dying patient receives only a speedier end from the more active medicines; the fierce unreasonable temper is only made worse by the kindness of the lavished pearls, as the Gospel tells us. I think it best, therefore, in accordance with the Divine command, for any one to separate the valuable from the worthless when either have to be given away, and to avoid the pain which a generous giver must receive from one who treads upon his pearl,’ and insults him by his utter want of feeling for its beauty.

The twenty-second and twenty-third Orations were certainly delivered at Constantinople about the middle of the year 379. At the end of the latter of those two Orations, Gregory promises to crush the serpent eggs of heresy by a stiff and solid argument. There can be little doubt that he regarded his Theological Orations as the fulfilment of this promise. And in Oration XLII, in which Gregory took leave of Constantinople and the Council, he speaks of having already carefully dealt with the Scriptural texts around which the current contro versies raged - a description which would well suit the Theological Orations, especially the fourth. Everything therefore points to the correctness of the conclusion that the Five Orations were delivered - and probably published in writing - in the year 380.
