As the dust settles in the South, Christa Cameron emerges from the Confederacy’s bitter defeat bent but not broken, her spirit unvanquished, and her sense of outrage inflamed. To save her family’s plantation, Christa hopes to marry a Yankee officer . . . so she coaxes one into a legal union. But Christa vows not to compromise her pride or her purity—no matter how far her virile new husband carries her from home. Though she might not think much of him, Colonel Jeremy McCauley has fallen hard for the stunning, stubborn Christa. As the cavalry heads west with the stampeding buffalo, Jeremy insists that she play the part of loyal army wife and join him, intending to build a new world on the ashes of the old. But when Christa is taken hostage by a dangerous Indian tribe, Jeremy must prove the startling depths of his devotion—and fulfill the promise of a love as fierce as the American wilderness. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The titanic three-day battle of Gettysburg left 50,000 casualties in its wake, a battered Southern army far from its base of supplies, and a rich historiographic legacy. Thousands of books and articles cover nearly every aspect of the battle, but not a single volume focuses on the military aspects of the monumentally important movements of the armies to and across the Potomac River. One Continuous Fight: The Retreat from Gettysburg and the Pursuit of Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, July 4-14, 1863 is the first detailed military history of Lee's retreat and the Union effort to catch and destroy the wounded Army of Northern Virginia. Against steep odds and encumbered with thousands of casualties, Confederate commander Robert E. Lee's post-battle task was to successfully withdraw his army across the Potomac River. Union commander George G. Meade's equally difficult assignment was to intercept the effort and destroy his enemy. The responsibility for defending the exposed Southern columns belonged to cavalry chieftain James Ewell Brown (Jeb) Stuart. If Stuart fumbled his famous ride north to Gettysburg, his generalship during the retreat more than redeemed his flagging reputation. The ten days of retreat triggered nearly two dozen skirmishes and major engagements, including fighting at Granite Hill, Monterey Pass, Hagerstown, Williamsport, Funkstown, Boonsboro, and Falling Waters. President Abraham Lincoln was thankful for the early July battlefield victory, but disappointed that General Meade was unable to surround and crush the Confederates before they found safety on the far side of the Potomac. Exactly what Meade did to try to intercept the fleeing Confederates, and how the Southerners managed to defend their army and ponderous 17-mile long wagon train of wounded until crossing into western Virginia on the early morning of July 14, is the subject of this study One Continuous Fight draws upon a massive array of documents, letters, diaries, newspaper accounts, and published primary and secondary sources. These long-ignored foundational sources allow the authors, each widely known for their expertise in Civil War cavalry operations, to describe carefully each engagement. The result is a rich and comprehensive study loaded with incisive tactical commentary, new perspectives on the strategic role of the Southern and Northern cavalry, and fresh insights on every engagement, large and small, fought during the retreat. The retreat from Gettysburg was so punctuated with fighting that a soldier felt compelled to describe it as "One Continuous Fight." Until now, few students fully realized the accuracy of that description. Complimented with 18 original maps, dozens of photos, and a complete driving tour with GPS coordinates of the entire retreat, One Continuous Fight is an essential book for every student of the American Civil War in general, and for the student of Gettysburg in particular. About the Authors: Eric J. Wittenberg has written widely on Civil War cavalry operations. His books include Glory Enough for All (2002), The Union Cavalry Comes of Age (2003), and The Battle of Monroe's Crossroads and the Civil War's Final Campaign (2005). He lives in Columbus, Ohio. J. David Petruzzi is the author of several magazine articles on Eastern Theater cavalry operations, conducts tours of cavalry sites of the Gettysburg Campaign, and is the author of the popular "Buford's Boys" website at www.bufordsboys.com. Petruzzi lives in Brockway, Pennsylvania. A long time student of the Gettysburg Campaign, Michael Nugent is a retired US Army Armored Cavalry Officer and the descendant of a Civil War Cavalry soldier. He has previously written for several military publications. Nugent lives in Wells, Maine.

Download or read book From Where The Sun Stands Now And Then Forever Stands written by Jack F. Reich and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2005-08 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of Jamie Renee Coleman’s life and the unfortunate circumstances that she has endured helped to pass a state law that now protects other people and their rights from being permanently sterilized without their knowledge or permission. Roger, my lawyer, said, “Jamie, I am so sorry for you for what your mother and this doctor did to you.” I could see the tears welling up in his eyes. I asked him what I should do now. My lawyer said, “Jamie, I don’t know if you know this or not, but there is a law on the books because of your life story. It took your experience to pass this law that says no one can be sterilized unless they are in a mental institution. I know it was all wrong and that they should have to pay for what they have done to you.” He then told me that he had talked with Dr. Kline and the doctor wasn’t very nice to him, questioning him like he did. Roger threatened the doctor by telling him that he had better tell the truth about all of this or that he would have a big lawsuit on his hands. Roger said it took over an hour to convince him, but that the doctor finally told him the truth about what the surgery had done to my body. I could never have children. Jamie Renee Coleman

Book The First Battle of the First World War

Download or read book The First Battle of the First World War written by Karl Deuringer and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2014-09-01 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 7 August 1914 a French corps attacked towards Mulhouse in Alsace and was immediately thrown back by the Germans. On 14 August, two weeks before Tannenberg and three weeks before the Battle of the Marne, the French 1st and 2nd Armies attacked into Lorraine, and on 20 August the German 6th and 7th Armies counterattacked. After forty-three years of peace, this was the first test of strength between France and Germany. In 1929, Karl Deuringer wrote the official history of the battle for the Bavarian Army, an immensely detailed work of 890 pages, chronicling the battle to 15 September. Here, First World War expert and former army officer Terence Zuber has translated and edited this study to a more accessible length, while retaining over thirty highly detailed maps, to bring us the first account in English of the first major battle of the Great War.

The Virginian paved the way for many more westerns by such authors as Zane Grey, Louis L'Amour, and several others. It is also widely regarded as being the first cowboy novel. Book Life and Times of Jeb Ratliff

Download or read book Life and Times of Jeb Ratliff written by Jimmy Crisp and published by Covenant Books, Inc.. This book was released on 2022-04-19 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jeb Ratliff was raised with strong Christian values but was thrust into the middle of the bloodiest war in our history. Winners write history and their explanations oftentimes stray from the actual facts. He was raised knowing that slavery was an abomination but chose to fight for the South as many Southern men and women did. After the war, many survivors headed west and, in doing so, helped to settle a new land. Their character was exactly what was needed at the time, hard men for a hard and unforgiving land. Sadly, there was someone there before them though, and these brave people did not want to leave their homes nor be told how to live their lives either. How would the storm of the century be remembered? Find out through the eyes of one of these men. In lieu of his dreams and driven by his passion for passing knowledge along to future generations, the author paints us an epic reminder of the true reasons behind our war-rich history and why the wars of today are nothing more than a continuance of a war from long ago.
