Book Rehabilitation Techniques for Stripped Asphalt Pavements

Download or read book Rehabilitation Techniques for Stripped Asphalt Pavements written by David R. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asphalt stripping is a fairly common form of distress for pavements in Montana, particularly for pavements that were surfaced with an open graded friction course. Currently, the technique for rehabilitating these pavements involves the costly removal of most or all of the stripped material, prior to the placement of an overlay. The goal of this research was to determine whether the stripped material can remain in place, serving as a structural layer within the rehabilitated pavement. This study has involved the construction of five test sites, which were incorporated into larger overlay projects. At each of these sites, stripped material was removed from a control section and stripped material was left in place for a test section, prior to the placement of the overlay. Leaving stripped asphalt concrete surface material in place during rehabilitation, to be overlayed with the new asphalt concrete, did not tend to make the rehabilitated pavement more susceptible to either stripping damage or load induced damage. Life cycle cost analyses should consider rate of stripping deterioration (in./year) to new asphalt concrete to be the same, whether or not stripped material is removed prior to placing an overlay. Overlay thickness and mix design methods for resisting stripping are the important factors for extending the life of a rehabilitated stripped asphalt pavement.

Book Rehabilitation of Asphalt Concrete Pavements

Download or read book Rehabilitation of Asphalt Concrete Pavements written by Harold L. Von Quintus and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SPS-5 experiment, entitled Rehabilitation of Asphalt Concrete Pavements, is one of the key experiments of the TPP program. The objective of this experiment is to determine the relative influence and long-term effectiveness of different rehabilitation techniques (including overlay thickness, material, and surface preparation) and site conditions (traffic, pre-existing pavement condition, and climatic factors) on performance. This report documents the first comprehensive review and evaluation of data completeness and availability from the SPS-5 experiment. Eighteen SPS-5 projects have been identified. At each site there are nine core test sections. Some SPS-5 projects also have various supplemental sections. 210 test sections are included in the SPS-5 experiment. The data availability and completeness were good overall for the SPS-5 experiment with two exceptions: traffic and materials test data. These data deficiencies need to be addressed before a comprehensive analysis of the SPS-5 experiment is conducted. Both of these data elements must be collected in order for the SPS-5 experiment to meet the expectations for calibrating and validating mechanistic models. The majority of the SPS-5 data that were collected were at level E. Required experiment design factors were compared with the actual experiment design for the large majority of the design factors and can be characterized as good to excellent when comparing designed versus constructed. One project had yet to be constructed and materials testing and data processing still needed to be completed.

Book Developing Best Practices for Rehabilitation of Concrete with Hot Mix Asphalt HMA Overlays Related to Density and Reflective Cracking

Download or read book Developing Best Practices for Rehabilitation of Concrete with Hot Mix Asphalt HMA Overlays Related to Density and Reflective Cracking written by Eshan V. Dave and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Asphalt overlays are commonly used to rehabilitate deteriorated Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavements. However, mechanically or thermally driven movements at joints and cracks in the underlying pavement usually lead to development of reflective cracks in the overlay. The formation and propagation of reflection cracking is controlled by the mechanical properties of the asphalt and the condition of the overlaid pavement. Current state of practice for asphalt overlay design is policy oriented and lacking an engineered design approach. There is need for establishing state of practice in design of overlays as well as for assessment of PCC pavement condition and recommending improvements to existing pavement prior to overlay construction. The objective of this study is to develop a simple decision tree-based tool for selecting suitable asphalt mixtures and overlay designs to prolong overlay lives by lowering reflective cracking and improving in-situ density. This research will leverage the current National Road Research Alliance (NRRA) effort of constructing, instrumenting, and monitoring 12 MnROAD test sections, laboratory performance tests on asphalt mixtures from the test sections, and past field performance data. The proposed tool incorporates field performance data, performance modelling, and life-cycle cost analysisto develop best practices for rehabilitation of PCC with asphalt overlays.
