He was defeated and executed after leading an uprising against his cruel, fundamentalist brother Emperor Aurangzeb. Bedil (1644-1721) was born and educated near Patna in India. In later life he travelled. His writings in Persian are extensive, being one of the creators of the 'Indian style'. He had complicated views on God, influenced by the Sufis. His 16 books of poetry contain 0ver 3600 ruba'is. He is now considered a great later master of this form. Hali (1837-1914) has a special place in Urdu Sufi literature. He was poet, critic, teacher, reformer and prose-writer. He acquired through his own efforts Urdu, Persian and Arabic and English. As a poet he was a mater of the ruba'i. He wrote biographies of Ghalib and Sadi. Iqbal (1873-1938) graduated from Government College, Lahore with a master's degree in philosophy. He taught there while he established his reputation as an Urdu poet. He turned to Islam and Sufism for inspiration and rejected nationalism as a disease of the West. Becoming convinced that Muslims were in danger from the Hindu majority if India should become independent, he gave his support to Jinnah as the leader of India's Muslims. Sarmad (d. 1659) was known for exposing and ridiculing the major religions and hypocrisy of his day, but he also wrote beautiful Sufi poetry in the form of 321 rubai's. He wandered the streets of Delhi as a naked dervish. He was beheaded in 1659 by Emperor Aurangzeb. Makhfi (1638-1702) was the beautiful, talented oldest daughter of Aurangzeb. She was imprisoned for 20 years by him for her Sufi views. Her ghazals and ruba'is are deep, spiritual and often heartbreaking. Bedil (1644-1721). His writings in Persian are extensive, being one of the creators of the 'Indian style'. He was heavily influenced by Sufism. Mir (1723 - 1810) was a leading Urdu poet and one of its pioneers. He was of the Delhi school of the Urdu ghazal. Mir practiced Malamati or 'Blameworthy' aspect of Sufism. Dard (1720-1784) is considered one of the three great poets of the Delhi school of classical Urdu poetry. He was a Sufi poet able to successfully transmit his mystical philosophy into his poetry and his ghazals can be read in both a mystical and secular way. Zafar (1775 - 1862) was the last of the Mughal emperors in India, as well as the last ruler of the Timurid Dynasty. Zafar was a noted Urdu poet and Sufi who has left behind a huge collection of ghazals in four volumes. Ghalib (1797-1869}. Fame came to him posthumously. Although he wrote ghazals, qit'as and ruba'is in Persian he is more famous for those written in Urdu. In this selection of both languages all reflect his Sufism. AL-SHUSHTARI (1212-1269) was a Sufi poet who was born in Guadix, northwest of Granada, Spain. As a young man he travelled to Tunisia, Algeria, Damascus and several times made the pilgrimage to Mecca. He finally settled in Egypt. He became a devotee of the Sufi Master Ibn Sab'in. Al-Shushtari composed two treatises on Sufism. Often when walking or riding the poet would sing his poems and play an instrument as he did so. He was influenced by Ibn 'Arabi. As a young man he travelled to Tunisia, Algeria, Damascus and several times made the pilgrimage to Mecca. He finally settled in Egypt. He became a devotee of the Sufi Master Ibn Sab'in who was four years younger than him and was widely respected at that time. They first met in Algeria when in their thirties and later went together to Mecca and Egypt. Al-Shushtari composed two treatises on Sufism and dedicated three poems to his spiritual Master. Often when walking or riding the poet would sing his poems and play an instrument as he did so. In his latter days he had many disciples. He was influenced by the great Sufi Perfect Master Ibn 'Arabi although he expressed at times criticism of the complicated nature of his teachings, preferring a simpler explanation. Al-Shushtari's true legacy lives on in the heart of men who still sing his poems and celebrate his memory. In the Delta of Egypt, followers of the Shadhiliyya Order still recite his zajal, while in Tunisia his words are sung to the tones of a musical instrument bearing his name, 'al-Sustariyya.' In Morocco his songs are a common denominator to several Sufi celebrations, and in Spain he is regarded as a trendsetter in Andalusian literature and is better known as 'The Juggler of Love.' He was influenced by Ibn 'Arabi and Hafiz.. He composed many prose works on Sufism and his Divan contains over 13,000 couplets, mostly ghazals and ruba'is. Shah Da'i (1406-1464) was born and passed away in Shiraz. He was initiated into Sufism by Abu Ishaq Bahrami known as 'The Shaikh of Four Books', a leader or representative of Shah Ni'mat'ullah. Among Shah Dai's works are a number of risalahs (Essays) including interpretations of Koranic verses, a translation of a short work of Ibn 'Arabi. Qutub Shah (1565-1611) was the fifth sultan of the Qutub Shahi dynasty of Golconda in South India. He founded the city of Hyderabad. Qutub Shah was a scholar of Arabic and Persian. He wrote poetry in Urdu and Persian. Qutub Shah had the distinction of being the first Urdu poet and is credited with introducing a new sensibility into prevailing genres of Persian/Urdu poetry. He was also a mystic or Sufi poet. Shah Latif (1689-1752) was a Sufi Master and is considered by many to be the greatest poet of the Sindhi language. His book of poetry is called the Risalo. His shrine is located in Bhit and attracts hundreds of pilgrims every day. He is the most famous Sindhi poet and Sufi. Bulleh Shah (1680-1758) was a Sufi poet who composed in Punjabi and settled in Kasur, now in Pakistan. His Spiritual Master was Shah Inayat. The poetic form Bulleh Shah used is called the Kafi, a style of Punjabi poetry used not only by the Sufis of Sindh and Punjab, but also by Sikh gurus. Nur 'Ali Shah (1760-1796). The 36th Qutub or Perfect Master or 'Pole' of the Ni'matullah Sufi Order was born in Isfahan. The Ulama of Kirmansh 'Ali Bihbahani who was nick-named 'the Sufi killer' saw the Sufi Poet Nur 'Ali Shah as a threat and he was poisoned.
