Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Five Fur Traders of the Northwest captures the day-to-day life of the fur trader during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Long out of print and difficult to obtain, this useful book contains the authentic journals of five fur traders. Peter Pond, a founding partner of the NorthWest Company, makes detailed observations of the region's native peoples. JohnMacdonell describes with care his first trip over the fur trade route through the Great Lakes and the Minnesota-Ontario border lakes to the region of Lake Winnipeg. Archibald N. McLeod's journal tells of wintering at Fort Alexandria on the Assiniboine River. Hugh Faries writes of life at the North West Company's fort on the Rainy River. Finally, John Sayer records his establishing of a trading post in the St. Croix River country near present-day Pine City, Minnesota. (This diary was originally attributed to Thomas Connor, but research conducted since the 1965 edition has established Sayer as the true author.) These documents offer dramatic, firsthand glimpses of the daily existence of voyageurs and Indians and detailed data on canoeing, trading practices, trade goods, and Indian customs.

Book French Fur Traders and Voyageurs in the American West

Download or read book French Fur Traders and Voyageurs in the American West written by LeRoy Reuben Hafen and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ?Frenchmen were far ahead of Englishmen in the early Far West, not only prior in time but greater in numbers and in historical importance,? writes Janet Lecompte in her introduction to French Fur Traders and Voyageurs in the American West. They were the first to navigate the Mississippi and its tributaries, and they founded St. Louis and New Orleans. Though France lost her North American possessions in 1763, thousands of her natives remained on the continent. Many of them were voyageurs for Hudson?s Bay Company, whose descendants would join American fur trade companies plying the trans-Mississippi West. ø This volume documents the fact that in the nineteenth century Frenchmen dominated the fur trade in the United States. Twenty-two biographies, collected from LeRoy R. Hafen?s classic ten-volume The Mountain Men and the Fur Trade of the Far West, represent a variety of origins and social classes, types of work, and trading areas. Here are trappers who joined John Jacob Astor?s ill-fated fur venture on the Pacific, St. Louis traders who hauled goods to Spanish New Mexico along the Santa Fe Trail, and those who traded with Indians in the western plains and mountains.

Book The Fur Hunters of the Far West

Download or read book The Fur Hunters of the Far West written by Alexander Ross and published by University of Oklahoma Press. This book was released on 1956 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Alexander Ross offers a completely authentic account of the earliest attempts by men of European background to come to grips with the climate, geography, and inhabitants of the Northwest at a time when resourcefulness and daring were prime virtues. It offers, moreover, an on-the-scenes interpretation of the conflict between American and British interests, their rivalry for the vast wealth in Northwest furs, the conflict between free trade and corporate enterprise in the wilderness, and the conflict with the North West Company itself. Ross himself - a Scotsman by birth, at one time a trader for John Jacob Astor and the Americans - emerges as one of the heroic figures of both American and British frontier history. He recounts with frankness, excellent perspective, and a fine sense of humor the human adventures of which he was a part.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Lords of the North: Fur Traders Northwest Any variations in detail from actual occurrences as seen by my own eyes are solely for the purpose of screening living descendants of those whose lives are here portrayed from prying curios ity; but, in truth, many experiences during the thrilling days of the fur companies were far too harrowing for recital. I would fain have tem pered some Of the incidents herein related to suit the sentiments of a milk-and-water age; but that could be done only at the cost of truth.
