  • Author : Brandi Bethke
  • Publisher : University Press of Florida

  • ISBN : 0813057469
  • Pages : 285 pages

Download or read book Dogs written by Brandi Bethke and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 285 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume offers a rich archaeological portrait of the human-canine connection. Contributors investigate the ways people have viewed and valued dogs in different cultures around the world and across the ages. Case studies from North and South America, the Arctic, Australia, and Eurasia present evidence for dogs in roles including pets, guards, hunters, and herders. In these chapters, faunal analysis from the Ancient Near East suggests that dogs contributed to public health by scavenging garbage, and remains from a Roman temple indicate that dogs were offered as sacrifices in purification rites. Essays also chronicle the complex partnership between Aboriginal peoples and the dingo and describe how the hunting abilities of dogs made them valuable assets for Indigenous groups in the Amazon rainforest. The volume draws on multidisciplinary methods that include zooarchaeological analysis; scientific techniques such as dental microwear, isotopic, and DNA analyses; and the integration of history, ethnography, multispecies scholarship, and traditional cultural knowledge to provide an in-depth account of dogs’ lives. Showing that dogs have been a critical ally for humankind through cooperation and companionship over thousands of years, this volume broadens discussions about how relationships between people and animals have shaped our world. Book My Life with Shelter Dogs

Download or read book My Life with Shelter Dogs written by John Huh and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the accounting of how I became involved with shelter dogs and rescued fifty-five of them from high-kill shelters or situations that could have led to death by cruel circumstances or euthanasia. This story is about not only of these fifty-five dogs but also of dogs that were in shelters but desperately needed help to cope with shelter life. It also describes how dogs with issues were handled so they could learn to deal with their issues and become family members and lead normal lives. It is also about abused dogs and how to get them to trust a human again. This book is dedicated to my own dog, Scrappy, whom I rescued hours before he was to be euthanized for biting people. He was a fearful, abused dog and didn’t trust people. We built his trust on his terms, and eight years later, he is very much loved and part of our family.

Book Sharing Time With Our Wonderful Dogs

Download or read book Sharing Time With Our Wonderful Dogs written by Robert Parker and published by Dolman Scott Publishers. This book was released on 2023-11-21 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dog certainly is a wonderful friend to men and women. In my experience , all dogs are forever constant, loyal, obedient , consistent, and faithful. They will remain by your side through thick and thin, ever ready to defend you, comfort you, and love you. Indeed I have heard stories of dogs getting separated from their owners, but still waiting faithfully for years until the time comes when they can be re-united. There are tales of dogs getting lost, and then going through thick and thin to find their way home and get back to their owner. I say 'owner' though there really is some doubt as to whether the man owns the dog, or the dog owns the man. The best time to 'acquire' a dog is probably when it is at six to ten weeks old. At this point in time, it is a wrench for the dog to be separated from their 'mum', but very quickly a new bond forms with the new owner , and if the dog is given the time and love that all creatures need, the bond becomes life-long and unshakeable. I have owned eight dogs during my life time. Every one has been very special, with individual and different and endearing traits. It has been a joy to share their lives and their love , to help them discover the natural world, and to form an eternal bond. When the end of their life has come, each and every time............. the grief has been unbounded. .................. but the memories remain forever, and this little book is an attempt to share some of these precious occasions and moments that occurred and we enjoyed together.
