Book Chorale preludes BuxWV 177 224

Download or read book Chorale preludes BuxWV 177 224 written by Dietrich Buxtehude and published by Courier Corporation. This book was released on 2006-01-01 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A major influence on Bach—who once walked 200 miles to hear him perform—Buxtehude is among the great names in organ music and the study of counterpoint. Born five decades after Heinrich Schütz, the "father of German musicians," and a little less than half a century before Bach, he bridged the era between the founder of Protestant Baroque music and its greatest master. This collection of church chorales attests to Buxtehude's reputation as an outstanding composer of sacred vocal music. For his texts, the composer drew upon scripture as well as church hymns and contemporary or medieval sacred poetry. Albert Schweitzer, in his famous biography of Bach, observed that Buxtehude's chorale preludes are "chorale fantasias of the most varied kinds, from the simplest to the most ingenious. In the simple ones the melody goes its way quietly, just embellished here and there with a few ornaments, and accompanied by interesting and always ingenious harmonies. . . . In the large chorale preludes, Buxtehude tears the melody in pieces, throws the fragments into the flood of a brilliant, animated fantasia." Authoritative and modestly priced, this treasury of Buxtehude's works offers organists a source of endless satisfaction and inspiration.

Book A Passage of Nostalgia

Download or read book A Passage of Nostalgia written by Martina Viljoen and published by UJ Press. This book was released on 2020-12-20 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jacobus Kloppers, an eminent composer, organist, pedagogue, and scholar, significantly contributed to musicological and organ teaching in South Africa and Canada and, in the latter context, art music, and liturgical composition. A Passage of Nostalgia – The Life and Work of Jacobus Kloppers, as a symbolic gesture, constitute recognition of his work both in South Africa and Canada. This publication is unique in that, apart from relevant disciplinary perspectives, biographical and autobiographical narrative, and anecdote, all constitute a necessary means through which the authors illuminate Kloppers’ compositional process and its creative outcomes. In this regard, Kloppers generously dedicated his time to the project to make information on his life and work available, often in complex ways. This retrospective input supports the work offered as an authentic, self-reflective recounting of a life of dedicated service in music. The construct of nostalgia as an overarching theme to this volume on some level denotes Kloppers’ position of cultural and religious ‘insidedness’ and ‘outsidedness’. However, apart from representing a return to a lost and challenging past, the composer’s creative work affirms his individuality, sense of artistic self, and propensity for spiritual acceptance and tolerance. Moreover, nostalgia in his oeuvre takes on importance as a rhetorical artistic practice by which continuity is as central as discontinuity.

Book J S Bach s Leipzig Chorale Preludes

Download or read book J S Bach s Leipzig Chorale Preludes written by Anne Leahy and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2011-10-10 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2007, the great Bach scholar Anne Leahy died at the age of 46. She was a leading light in Bach studies and lecturer at the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT) Conservatory of Music and Drama. Posthumously edited by renowned Bach scholar Robin A. Leaver, Leahy's dissertation research forms the basis for this original study of the preludes to Bach's Leipzig chorales. Originally composed in Weimar and later revised in Leipzig, Bach's compositions have been a source of some puzzlement. As Leahy notes, "the original intentions of Bach and the possible purpose of this collection might be regarded as speculative." Working from available sources, however, she argues that through the careful examination of the links among the music, hymn texts, and theological sources some answers may be had. From Bach's personal and deep interest in Lutheran theology to his enormous musical passion, Leahy considers closely a series of critical questions: does the original manuscript for the chorales simply reflect a random gathering of compositions or is there a common theme in setting? How critical is the order of the chorales and what is the theological significance of that order? Were the chorales a unified collection, and if so, which parts were to be included and which not? Indeed, were the chorales themselves part of a possibly larger corpus? As Leahy makes evident, there are no simple answers, which is why she considers critical the relationship the texts of the hymns to the chorales and to one another, outlining a theological pattern that is vital to fully grasping the guiding philosophy of these compositions. J. S. Bach's "Leipzig" Chorale Preludes: Music, Text, Theology is ideally suited for Bach scholars and those with a general interest in the intricate connections between text and music in the composition of religious music.

Book J S Bach s Great Eighteen Organ Chorales

Download or read book J S Bach s Great Eighteen Organ Chorales written by Russell Stinson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2001-02-15 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the 250th anniversary of the composer's death, this volume offers an in-depth look at the "Great Eighteen" organ chorales, among the most celebrated works for organ, and a milestone in the history of the chorale. Addressed to organists, scholars, and general listeners alike, this lucid and engaging book examines the music from a wide spectrum of historical and analytical perspectives. Stinson examines the models used by Bach in conceiving the original pieces, his subsequent compilation of these works into a collection, and his compositional process as preserved by the autograph manuscript. Himself an accomplished organist, Stinson also considers various issues of performance practice and concludes with a discussion of the music's reception--its dissemination in manuscript and printed form, its performance history, and its influence on later composers. Completely up-to-date and presenting a wealth of new material, much of it translated into English for the first time, this study will open up fresh perspectives on some of the composer's greatest creations.
