Book Fitness of Christianity to Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fitness of Christianity to Man Classic Reprint written by F. D. Huntington and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fitness of Christianity to Man It was required that the matter contained in this small volume should be delivered in a church to an audience not differing much from the congregations that generally gather in cities for worship, except as it might happen to include a larger proportion of educated minds. It was also demanded by the terms of the lectureship that the lectures, having been so delivered, should be forthwith issued in print as a treatise. To almost any student this twofold necessity must be somewhat embarrassing, as involving a certain literary incompatibility. It will appear that I chose to keep before me in writing the assembly of hearers, and have not thought it worth while to take pains to strike out some forms of expression and some illustrative passages belonging to a public address. I had contemplated the use of a considerable array of references to authorities, and to agreeing or differing authors. But on the whole I see no worthy occasion for it, and therefore present only a few marginal acknowledgments to writers to whom I am conscious of being indebted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Christian Doctrine of Man It is hardly necessary to remind the reader that almost every section and subsection of this book touches con troversial points, and that no two writers will agree on every detail of such a subject as this. I have spared no pains to secure accuracy of fact, but am very conscious, in other respects, of the limitations of this volume; some of these are due to the necessary limits of space, though far more to the demands the subject makes on both theological learning and Christian experience. Book Introducing Men to Christ

Download or read book Introducing Men to Christ written by W. D. Weatherford and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-17 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introducing Men to Christ: Fundamental Studies There is a very great need to-day that men shall be brought to feel that religion is not a thing apart, that it is knit up with the ordinary processes of Our lives. We need to see that being religious is not having some vague, mysti cal experience, but living a life of real friendship. Perhaps as never before men are coming to realize that Christian life is not abnormal, but the most completely normal. In this life we use the same powers of personality which we use in our ordinary friendships, the sole difference being that in this God friendship we are associated with a perfect and full personality; while in all other friendships we are associated with incomplete and partial persons like our selves. This makes a difference in the intensity and mean ing of our friendship, but no difference as to kind. Further, there is a need to quiet the minds of some who seem to think psychology is putting God out of the work ings of the human soul. A few year ago, when evolution was in the enthusiastic flush of a new discovery, many of its advocates and still more of the Christian people thought it was destined to explain away God's working in the universe of physical nature. But we have long Since ceased to feel that evolution is Opposed to religion. It claims to be only a theory of the method of creation; and if it can and does reveal to us the method by which God works, we may well rejoice in this new light, which is essentially religious. Book The Claims of the Ministry on Strong Men Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Claims of the Ministry on Strong Men Classic Reprint written by George Angier Gordon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Claims of the Ministry on Strong Men By strong men, I mean persons oi intellectual power, who are at the same time persons of high moral ideals and intense moral enthusiasms. By the ministry, I mean the service of a Christian preacher in some one of the various churches of our time. If our men of intellectual power are not at the same time men of high moral ideals and intense moral enthusiasms, the ministry has no claims upon them. It does not want them; they are not fitted to teach religion because they are not experts in it. They are not experts because they are without first-hand, abundant, and joyous knowledge of it. Such per sons become, by their intellectual power, a damag ing influence upon religion; they lead the public to think that the intellect has little or nothing to do with religion; they stimulate a revolt against reason and a return to fanaticism. It must be repeated, therefore, that our strong man is one whose chief interest in life is moral and Spiritual. He is one Whose governing aspiration is for excellence of being, high bearing in his relations with men and with God. A young man of intellectual power may be sure of his fitness for the ministry if his whole heart kindles into flame as he reads and ponders these words: Blessed are they that hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Amusement Force in Christian Training: Four Discourses The false instinct of self-preservation, which sent the Romanist into cloisters and convents, and tore him from the sweet sanctities of domes tic life, has perpetuated itself more than some of us think in Protestant thought and church legis lation. And in nothing has this tendency revealed itself more distinctly than in the matter of amusements. For amusement, having the effect to make men feel kindly toward the world, and, more readily than duty, falling in with human inclination, has been regarded as unsafe, and therefore as a thing to be kept at arm's length by the church, and admitted to her folds only under the strictest surveillance, and in gyves and handcuffs.
